North Carolina Killer: I Played GTA Before Double Murder

A 22-year-old convicted killer claims that he played Grand Theft Auto just before murdering two housemates in 2005. James Christopher Stitt is waiting to learn whether he will be executed or face life in prison for the gruesome double slaying. Stitt told a psychiatrist that he played GTA until 4 a.m. and then committed the killings.

lol the thing is when you play video games for a long time, sometimes you get a bit immersed in the game world. Not to the extent of harming another person but for a brief moment, your thoughts can sway this way or that way.

I remember after playing MGS3 snake eater for hours, anytime i went outside and i saw a squirrel i immediately had an urge to shoot it and eat it. For a second i would be stuck in that fantasy till i realized i wasn't in the game.

When i was playing GTA san andreas back in the day, i used to have urges to hop into any car i see lying on the street and just driving away with it.

But i never had any urges of killing anybody though

Yeah - like whenever I shoot someone in real life I always run over to their body to pick up their ammo :)

You should seek professional help right away. LOL

Then again when I play Sonic the Hedgehog for hours straight I feel like running around and collecting rings myself!

You're obviously on the edge. Better stop playing right now.

I have played games hours and hours and hours in row, but I've never felt any "symptoms" after playing them.

Lol well i like to live on the edge:D

But seriously i remember wanting to eat squirrels anytime they ran past and wanting to open the doors of random cars and just driving away with them.

I also remember the summer spider man 3 came out, i had lots of urges to just swing to class instead of just walking. sigh:(

Spidey, GTA and MGS3 are the only games i have had such urges for

When someone committed a murder the devil was their defense......now it's video games. I'm sure he had some past history of violence.what a sad world we live in these days.......P.S. if they know he committed the murder red handed. *&ck a trial. Just save us tax payers some cash and take his ass out back and shoot him with a ten cent bullet.

I played it for a long time last night and didn't kill anyone either. Maybe there is something wrong with us since the game apparently makes you want to kill people. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this guy was mental long before he played any GTA games.

Such a lame cop out. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES. Take the damn responsibilities like a MAN and admit you are a sick puppy and quick blaming an interactive CARTOON. What a tool.

4 - What was...
...Dahmer playing before he did all that ignorant $**t? Sounds like he could've been playing Tetris and gone on a rampage with 2X4s. As Chris Rock once said, "What ever happen to people just being crazy?" Mofos always looking for an excuse and we as a society are pushing illnesses and misdirected blame like it's the new pasttime.

No one will ever say "I played this game before doing the murder. This was the reason." by themselves just like that. It sounds way too fake.

This site should not publicize this.

This is him/his lawyers trying a weak ass plea in the hopes of shifting the blame from the boy (the actual MURDERER), to GTA (a computer game) purely to try and achieve a reduced incarceration.

Very low...

9 - When will people understand
That when someone is psychologically unstable, it could be a TV commercial or a movie trailer that will tip them over the edge? It's not just GTA. Psychologically healthy individual will never kill someone even after playing every single GTA out there..it's that simple.

Something tells me he could've been playing Barbie Horse Adventure and still taken some lives.

That would be my exact verdict as a judge lol.

edit: for those who'd get the reference, that kid looks like High Pitch Mike lol.

In fact, I am sure a lot of people eat food before they commit murder too...

14 - This is crazy
This guy make fellow North Carolinian's like me feel ashamed. He is just trying to feed off of GTA to make bail. But, it is not happening, in North Carolina he is getting the death penalty. That is how the law here always turns out most of the time.

I get urges to hurt people sometimes... I turn to violent video games to RELIEVE the urge. Some people just cant own up to their stupidity and bad decision making. If you kill someone you WILL do time or worse... pretty simple. It doesnt matter what you think you can pass the blame on.

Looks like somebody is trying to sound the Jack Thompson-signal.

Somewhere down in florida there is a huge spotlight in the clouds with a big dollar sign that within minutes will summon Jack Thompson from the 7th ring of Hell to come forth and cut a superficial flesh wound in the gaming community that will heal within hours. And then Jack returns to hell, not having accomplished anything of worth or value, to slumber once more until the next idiot tries to use the "video games made me do it" defense.

News at 11: Murderer claims he's not to blame for killing people. Lawyer claims he's actually the victim of videogames that forced him to become the monster he is today. Hilary Clinton vows to protect innocent children like James Christopher Stitt from videogames with new anti-videogames law. Jack Thompson claims the death-penalty for gamers might be considered.

So what if he did?!

"Mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally. An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older — about one in four adults — suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year...(in 2004)this figure translates to 57.7 million people." - NIMH's website

That's speaking just about the US. Worldwide, well (assuming just for the sake of getting through this comment that the statistic is the same worldwide), take 26.2% of an estimated 6.7 billion and you get 1.75 billion people with some form of mental disorder, not even neccessarily a violent one. 10's of Millions of people from all walks of life in all areas of the world play GTA games every day for hours on end. Logic dictates that some of these people will fall into both categories and at least one of them will be a murderer. THATS JUST (unfortunately) THE WAY IT IS. It doesn't have any direct causality with the game or the gaming. Its just a matter of overlapping popular statistics.
Seriously, this is most likely just a case of a man being scared for his life and letting his lawyers tell him to say something to brush the blame off of him, and his violent actions.
