DivX Video Encoding Now Available to PS3 Game Developers

The availability of DivX video encoding technology will enable developers to take full advantage of DivX compression technology while maintaining the integrity of high quality video. PS3 is the first gaming system capable of playing back DivX video.

"We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to offer DivX video encoding to PS3 game developers," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. "PS3 users can already use their PS3s to watch their own DivX videos, and now they'll also be able to enjoy the quality of DivX in the games."

Am pretty sure it will be used very well. Am wondering though, the videos in most games look very good already, how much more will this improve the videos ?

Doesn't most games use the ingame engine for cutscenes and such now anyway?

3.1 - I think a lot do
but games like uncharted used pre-rendered cutscenes (using in game assets) so that the next level or scene could be loaded in the background.

3.3 - It actually is in-game
But recorded and placed in as a video file. All of it was done in realtime on PS3 though. Just as other people said, the footage was used in order to facilitate background loading of the next stage.

The crazy thing is that they used the FMV assets like characters and whatnot as the actual gameplay models. The main characters have something like 20,000 polygons, which is 3~4x what you see in titles like Call of Duty 4 and Gears of War.

@Vip3r and DJ

Uncharted did not use In game cut scenes. The did prerender game graphics with some extra effects. The result is about 5-10% better.
Naughty Dog mentioned this themselves in an interview.

DivX quality? Oo HAH! PS3 Blu-ray based games don't need DivX.
DivX is good for 1 thing only ...making unbearably long video downloads less unbearable. So I suspect it's for PSN games.
If I could skip DivX for that or Video Downloads I would.

in that case wouldn't help out load times and less use of the HDD for installs? that would be good then.

Definitely. Think what Kojima said about space. If you can use DivX as a container for other things like audio 7.1 compressed or other things, to be able to lift in other data on the Blu-Ray that would be gold for studios out there.

DivX is not a good compression standard for disc based media. Kojima would not have used it even if it were available to him as he prefers uncompressed as much as possible.

Procedural Methods for cut scenes take less room and use already created assest to begin with so DivX doesn't actually save on space in most ingame engine cut scenes.

9 - Thats great and all
that they want to incoperate divx encoding for in game scenes. But how about they actually fix the limited divx playback we have now.... I can barely play divx on my ps3, it's really frustrating when i have to wipe the dust off my 360 just to play a divx....

Please fix the divx on PS3, it is a certified Divx device, so it should play everything! Xbox seems to play everything i throw at it, where it should be the one having issues, not the PS3... please fix soon, then i wont ever need my xbox again!
