Will Mirror's Edge Make Us All Sick?

DarkZero: I can't say a game ever made me sick, motion sick I mean, loads of games have turned my stomach in other ways though! However, it is a problem for many gamers, and if there was ever once game I felt a bit iffy about it would have to be the upcoming Mirror's Edge. Don't get me wrong, it seems like a fantastic idea, and should be another highly impressive game from the guys at DICE, but the idea of running, kicking, spinning, and leaping around parkour style all from the first person perspective is enough to get our lunch ready to make a nasty reappearance.

1 - Haze demo...
made me puke. Graphics were awesome. Gameplay was great. I got on top of a crashed airplane and was looking over a cliff, and ran to the bathroom and barfola. Cloverfield made me sick. I almost had to leave the theatre. I watched the Mirrors Edge trailer and didn't get sick. I saw Blair Witch in the theatre when I was younger and didn't get motion sick.

BTW... I have a 46" HDTV hanging on the wall and was sitting about 5 feet away while playing HAZE. Am I too close or something? I sit closer to the tv while playing COD4 and never get sick. What is the deal?

playing games while sitting 5 feet away from a 46 inch TV might not get you motion sick but it will probably make you blind in the long run.

Damn, blind to go along with his hand which is about to fall off ... ;)

I have a 100" projection screen in my bedroom which I used for blu-ray and gaming. But when I played FPS I'd get motion sick. COD4 was the last draw, I loved the game but couldn't play it. Went out and grabbed a 50" plasma (lcd doesn't cut it for me) and put it below the screen. Now I got the best of both worlds.

The trailer for this game did make me slightly dizzy though, and I watched it on a desktop monitor.

2 - Actually
Somebody within in the project (high up, director or something) has a problem with the sickness a game like Mirror's Edge can cause. It's not motion sickness but has the problem where moving images causes a sickness (can't remember the name). However, he has no problems playing the game. They added a target to the middle of the screen to stop the porblem happening and apparently it's a fix. So, there you go! :D

Hopefully more FPS games utilize that fix in the future. I know a few people that can't play shooters at all because they feel ill after a while. Makes me sad for 'em.

5 - This game does look awesome, but...
I think I will wait for a demo as I found myself a little disoriented just watching the trailer. Maybe it won't be so bad with a controller in my hands, but the camera does swing around quite a bit. I hope I can manage this game, though, because it looks great. More companies need to incorporate this type of innovation into their products. Truly unique and thumbs up to DICE.

That must suck to get motion sickness from a game.

I've never had that problem with a game, but I do get motion sickness when I'm a passenger in a moving vehicle.

7 - I don't have a problem with camera motions like this at all.
I love this kind of stuff! Very immersive. It sucks for people that can't cope with it though, definitely.

I do have a problem with games that have very poor framerates. After playing Saint's Row for an hour for instance, my eyes would start to get extremely tired. Very annoying!

Hope that focal point they spoke of helps out the masses, this sounds like a great new way to play a game, and a much needed change for everybody.

7.2 - Definitely.
Although, it's not entirely new (think: Breakdown for instance) it is the first FP action game to feature such heavy platforming/parcours gameplay.

Furthermore, this game just takes it to another level in terms of animation, camera-movement, presentation and immersion. It's really something else!

I've been waiting for a game like this since I've been playing videogames. I seriously hope they'll pull this one off, as it's not without reason very few developers even dare to try developing a game like this. Fingers crossed!

8.1 - Taking drugs for being able to handle certain games...
I'm not sure that's such a good idea. I can see the headlines already: "Videogames turning kids into drug addicts".

I know, it's stated a bit overdramatic. But you know how the press and politics like to take off with stuff like this.

8.2 - It's a drug for motion sickness.
It's not habit forming and if video games would be the cause for kids getting addicted to motion sickness drugs, then what about cars, trains and plains? They too would be liable I guess...

Besides, it was more of a joke. In the end, there are many ways to help with motion sickness. And as a note about the press and video games... I could care less. Games are not going away, it's too lucrative. If press would be the doom for video games, then they would have killed movies and music a long time ago.

10 - Motion Sickness
Medal of Honor on PS2 and CoD4 on PS3 and a few other games have occasionally made me motion sick. It was usually after I had been playing too long and had to quit.

This game looks cool. Hopefully it won't make me motion sick.

11 - UT3
I never get sick playing/watching games, but I know one thing that would make anyone even just little inclined for motion sickness to puke... And that is jumping off from the center pillar/tower on UT3 map called Torlan with the jump boots. It's over 100 meter drop and that's the first time EVER I even thought about feelig something... :)

12 - I do agree with the article headding
I'm ont one for gaming motion sickness but I certainly cna't play games with a First Person perspective, FPSs are fine but something like Condemned 2 was nausating for me and I get that same motion sickness look at vid of this game too.

I'm hoping they don't make a mistake like Factor 5 did with Lair and not atleast give an option to play in Third person view.
