Zero Punctuation racist remark during Mailbag Showdown

Typically you can listen to Zero Punctuation and "Yahtzee" Croshaw to get a great laugh. This episode had me smiling all around and we enjoyed the topic of reviews until he began to speak about people only being able to afford one console, he states that this is what creates fanboys, which I guess makes some sense. He loses me at the very end of his video monologue when he refers to "being white enough to afford all of the consoles"...

No, this isn't racist at all, and is a sign that people are way, way over-sensitive when it comes to humor.

Humor is largely about over-exaggerations and generalization. Yahtzee does this all the time. If anything, he was making fun of himself.

If he said "Being WHITE, and thus able to afford all the consoles", then he'd be racist. "Being white enough" is clearly a jab at him being a white YUPPIE.

I'm actually REALLY okay with racist remarks when they are just meant for a joke. I'm indian and I make of fun of my white/black/and oriental friends to no end (and vice versa). But I gotta say, that remark in the vid did offend me a little. because, seriously, if anyone can afford all 3 consoles, it's not white people...

It's satire, nothing is supposed to be sacred. And if anything he's taking the piss out of "white" folk for their usual habit of screwing over the rainbow of other colored people out there, hence the extra cash. He is from Britain after all, they do have a checkered history in that regard. It's a highly political reference, but hey, I laughed.

Seriously? We're going to debate over a comment made by Yahtzee? He's a comic game reviewer. I think he's poking about as much fun at white people who own all three consoles as he was illustrating that many people who aren't white, who are typically underpaid and undervalued, very honestly cannot afford all three. It's a legitimate statement, but when you brand it and make those sorts of divisions by color all of a sudden everyone gets uncomfortable.

...chill.

How can we be so blinded by political correctness that we can no longer see satire for what it is, this was more a jab at 'whites' than anyone, and a society that still allows for the advancement of one race over another.

Although, don't we typically see Caucasians as having more money than other races? That's just the kind of stereotypes we bear in our society. No one in their right mind could find this offensive.

True racism is idiotic.

Humor poking fun at race is not. At least, not always. That depends more on the skill of the comedian, I suppose.

People need to stop taking things so seriously and learn to laugh. We only have so much time on earth, why spend it getting uptight about something a comedian said that made fun of race?

^^^ I totally agree. if you read my earlier post you'll see why. But you got to also understand that if we get too comfortable with it, people are just gonna keep pushing things further and further. Most times, even if it starts as just a joke, it can end up in hate and violence.

He even makes fuin of whites and asians and mexicans and he uses the N word. If that doenst offend you then your a hypocrite. Is it because dave is blacxk and yahtzee is white? What if yahtzee was black would you care then?

When Dave Chappelle does it is rooted in reality and he actually makes you think. When all the comedy is said and done, he brought some valid points up about racism and about people following stereotypes.

Don't believe me? Watch his segments on "Ask a Black Dude" and his standup show "For What it's Worth". Hell on the "Lost Episodes" (which was actually Season 3) the skit with the racial pixies says it all. And that skit is partly why he stopped doing the show because of the reactions from the execs when he played it for them. There was a Q&A with the audience after that to gauge their reactions to the whole thing that was a bit of an eye opener.

I'm not getting too deep into the "N word" thing but I can tell you Chappelle's usage doesn't carry the same connotations as you're implying. He's a social commentator and a satirist and he's saying some real sh*t that brings the preconceived notions people have for one another to light. Now if they choose to continue that path or change is another story.

If you want to talk about someone throwing his race under the bus for cheap laughs and money, talk about Carlos Mencia (who's not even Mexican).

You still offer no explanation for why balcks can use race in comedy but white people cant. It just proves that racism is hypocritical. Yatzee made 1 joke 1 JOKE about his own race and hets crusified for it but black comdedians do that same thing and no one gives a crap. Why is it that back people can never be racist even when thay call each other racial slurs(dont try and twist it saying it means friend it has one meaning and thats a degrading racist term)?

Probably due to the fact that until about 50 years ago there were blackface, Sambo, Stepin Fetchit, and other assorted disparaging images against blacks all over the place. So right now it's still a sensitive subject coming from any non minorities (in America at least) to some. That's essentially what it boils down to.

Granted I agree that to a certain extent they can be hypocritical, which is why I hate when black comedians resort to the standard "black people do this, white people do that" jokes. It's old and it's pretty tired now. But I'm not sure how many comedians you watch because I can name a few white and comedians of other races who do the same thing (Lisa Lampanelli).

Back to the "N word" thing since you keep bringing up why no one gets upset when Chappelle says it, I'll tell you why. He's black, it's actually as simple as that. Outside of the makeup and the skits, we know what he is and what he's trying to get across. And before people go thinking otherwise there IS a difference between the two N variations (-gga and -gger accordingly). That topic however has been discussed to death elsewhere so I'm not going to go into why.

It's a different connotation and reasoning behind saying it if it comes from someone else. Somewhat the same reason I hate when people call me bro/homie/dawg with that "I'm trying to appeal to you and be 'hip' Mr. Black Dude" intonation. That in itself is what we call "passive racism", because despite what some TV shows, movies, and games (Cole Train damn you) would allow you to believe, not all black people walk around spouting slang at everyone they meet. Hell I don't, and I don't appreciate people thinking I do.

Now take that prior paragraph, and couple that with the fact the N word is a known racial slur and it's variant is used between SOME African Americans as much as "man" and "dude" and you can see why they get pissed when you say either one of them.

I've actually had white friends playfully try to use it to "be cool" and I told them "don't do that" and they stopped. My old boss used both of them last year when she was drunkenly hitting on me and I had some words with her. That's not the reason she's my old boss mind you. But it's kind of hard to convey this to someone because until they experience it first hand they won't TRULY understand. I'm not sure why you're so compelled to want to be able to say it in the first place but I guess that's on you.

Slayer OP - Why is the first thing out of your mouth "black people" and then again "black people". This artice does not have anything to do with black people. Why did you not mention hispanic comedians or asian comedians that make jokes about their race? The races do not get offended either. Jeff Foxworthy makes fun of some whites and no one gets offended.

Oh by the way, is this guy even a comedian? I am not offended by what he said at all, but your grasp at trying to make comparison between this and black comedians is puzzling. You could have choice many other races, but you choice black for some reason.

On topic, I am not offended by this, but that does not mean people are not going to feel that it is not racist and/or get offended by it. Thats there choice. Who am I to tell them they should not get offended.

I cant believe this, now im being accused of being a racist.

Im going to keep this simple so no more words get twisted

First off I have NO desire to use the N word. You think I want to get my ass kicked? I was mrely trying to say that black people (or african americans for you sensitive types) call each other that all the time yet if a white person says it suddenly its tabbo. If its such a bad word then DONT USE IT and dont call your friends the said word! It doesnt meand friend or buddy. Its a degragatory term.

Second my whole point here was why is this racism when african-american comedian use racist material all the time and yet no one cares? The only reason you people give a crap is because he is white which is, guess what racism! If he were black you wouldnt be pissed would you? So guess what? Anyone who thinks thats racist is a hypocrite because YOU are infact being racist without knowing it.

That is what I mean when I say racism is ful of hypocrisy.

@Slayer OP- You still never answered my questions. Yet again, you are ranting on about blacks. I never called you racist. I am just asking why you did not compare Asian, hispanic, etc comedians that make fun of their races or other races. Generalizing again with saying you people and saying that blacks use the "N" word. his article does not have to do anything with blacks. He used te phrase white enough, so that would exclude all other races.

anyone who thinks this is racist needs to stop being so pissy, calm down and learn to recognize a joke

why do people get so worked up about little quips like that? this is worse than people saying Resi 5 is "racist"

im white, but i dont judge people on the colour of their skin- not at all

im not racist in any way, but i can appreciate a little ->JOKE<- to do with racist stereotypes or issues

people need to chillax

we don't even know what he was implying with that quip- he could have been suggesting that people with other ethnicities cant afford all three consoles, or maybe he could have been implying that white people are too greedy- you cant just assume hes calling non-white people poor

@taz

no, that doesnt cut it buddy

if he stated that in an interview then yes we could easily peg him as a "racist"

however this was a quick quip in a comedy-based sketch

i think he was directing the joke at stereotype that white people just can't be happy with something- they always want something else

if in the future, he says "people who aren't white cant afford 3 consoles" than i will stand corrected

for now though- this is just a comedian making a joke

Russel Peters (the stand-up comedian) bases all of his shows around laughing and making jokes about different cultures and ethinicites- no-one calles him racist

your point fails- this isnt nearly strong enough to be pegged as racist
