Video Game Market "Atari Crash" Coming Soon? Game Republic's Okamoto Thinks So

Kombo writes: In an interview with Gamasutra, after expressing optimism in the Wii and third-party developers' ability to achieve success in the face of Nintendo's own offerings on the console, Okamoto made a few unsettling comments.

"...actually, and again, and this is those whispering voices saying this, but you've started hearing the phrase 'Atari crash' pretty frequently," Okamoto said. "People are talking about how the second 'Atari crash' is around the corner. And Nintendo is the one that has to figure out a way to stop it."

1 - it will only happen if
EA gets control and monopolizes the games industry.

and microsoft wins and makes an even worse system that RRODS than 360.

nintendo brought new casual gamers to the console market.and sony learned from it's mistakes of making hardware that breaks early and released a reliable piece of kit(third times the charm when you make hardware.even if expensive to make or buy).also bringing bluray adopters to console gaming.even if they just buy "ONE" game.

but even in bad times, people must still be entertained at home.even if it's cheap used games.

megaton...............

megaton............worth saying again...............

It's the ebb and flow of the industry and really it's similar in other mediums. You get a new product that takes off and opens up new markets, hungry fish jump in to toss out what they can to make a buck and inevitably the bigger fish prevail. Survival of the fittest The market can only sustain so much shovelware and the cream should rise to the top. You will see alot of companies go back to what they used to do or cease to exist altogether.

Now what evolves on the Wii is anyone's guess. You can't say the hardcore games will win out because at this point it looks like 2 categories of games are popular: Anything Nintendo puts out and party/mini games. Everything else seems to be hit or miss. It will be interesting to see how the Wii plays out.

3 - Atari...
...need to focus on the PSP and DS platforms. They don't have the deep pockets anymore to deliver quality games for the PS3, 360 or PC. They should look at modernizing some of their back catalog for the PSP especially.

However, when I say modernize I mean put some effort into it. Not like some of the crap they have released over the past 5 years.
