Metal Gear Online runs in 1080P

According to PS3 users that have MGO Premier Beta installed, the resolution is 1080P according to TV display settings. This is not a "forced" 1080P where 720P is unchecked in XMB but rather default display setting.

This is great news. We can expect the full game to be 1080p as well. SWEET!

I'm about to confirm it right now.

EDIT - Yup confirmed. 1080p glory

1.3 - Upscaled or native?
But is the 1080p upscaled, or is it true native 1080p? It might just be 720p or 960x1080 resolution upscaled to 1080p output, which is not the same thing.

People at Beyond3D need to start counting the pixels of this game to find out if it's truly running in full 1080p (which I kind of doubt, because there are only a handful of games that run in that resolution on the PS3).

I hate to be the party pooper but that's who I am. It might very well be that the menu runs at 1080p and the game doesn't. I do hope that it's true though.

Yea its true seen it wit ma own eyeeez

Looks like MGS4 may actually run at 1080p and 60fps. If its going to be 60 it better be steady as hell. Don't want it changing back and forth from 60 to 30 either just pick one and make it rock solid

The PS3 doesn't really force upscale a PS3 game like a PS2 game. It does, but it's forced by the developer and it's not a firmware upscaling. There's many games that say 1080p on the box, but are later figured out that the game is upscaled...like in the instances COD4 and Halo 3. There's a way to figure out the native resolution, but just because your TV says 1080p doesn't mean it really runs at that resolution natively. You can uncheck 720p, but if your TV is 1080p capable it'll run at that resolution, even if 1080p isn't unchecked. But that's cool you can run it at 1080p, it would be cool if it was the game's real resolution also.

Yeah this game may be 960x1080p native resolution but then it doubles pixels in the horizontal direction to achieve 1920x1080p. This is how Gran Turismo 5 Prologue achieves 1920x1080p with 60fps. Keep in mind that PS3 has a confirmed horizontal upscaler. This is an achievement nonetheless because 960x1080p is 15% higher resolution than native 720P.

If no one has pixel counted it, then you cant really take it as 1080p. Not that it matters, because right now you think its 1080p and then someone comes out and says its really not, does that information really change how good it looks? Just enjoy the game, who cares.

Statix - 623 days 2 hours ago
3.5 - 960x1080 isn't that great.
960x1080 isn't really that great of a resolution. It's about the same number of pixels as 720p (1280x720), just a little more. Certainly, it's not as good as full 1080p.

GT5:P is about halfway between 720p and 1080p with its 1280x1080p resolution.

I would love to see MGS4 and MGO run in native 1920x1080p, or even 1280x1080p, but I highly doubt that's the case.

3.6 - Great post 3.0 and 3.1 very informative
I ended up getting a 32" 720p/1080i 100hz tv due to it being a perfect size for my room and after researching a bit.

Cnet had a reviews on 1080p and 120hz and their benefits. They said that 1080p is only really beneficial on screens bigger than 50" unless your sitting closer than 1 1/2 the screen size due to the human eye perception. I also found Games magazines stating that the diff between the two resolutions is small/negligble to the humane eye.

The 100hz tech basically adds an extra frame between the normal 2 per ? This reduces the effect of blurring while watching sport or fast moving scenes. It works really great but some people may like the motion blur you get in action scenes but for sport its a great feature to have.

What do you think from your experiences on the diff between 1080i and 1080p when playing games?

I just want smooth running games without framerate issues.

1080P @ 60FPS is not the "sweetspot" this gen, probably next gen. so 1 game here and there that does such feat, I don't really care much for.

The PS3 on my Samsung 4671 looks fn spectacular..

and 720p is not the "sweet spot" because microsoft said so.

but why not have 1080p/60fps when you can if the dev can achieve it?

I don't see 1080p@60hz happening; not even next-gen will it be the "sweet spot." You're gonna have to sacrifice a LOT of graphical quality to get a game to run at either 1080p or 60fps ALONE, let alone both together.

To put it into perspective, a game like Uncharted only runs at 720p@30hz, and that game is pushing the PS3 pretty hard. People are being too optimistic if they expect a ton of games to run at 60 fps in the future.

5.4 - kewlkat007 just wanna emphasize
"I just want smooth running games without framerate issues."

This has nothing to do with Microsoft but as most fanboys do, always have to bring up BS, to feel better about their console of choice.

I'm certain 1080p @60 frames will not be the trend this gen. Yeah it's feasible with some games and in other games a lot is sacrificed, so it's not worth it.

If I recalled PS3 stated all their games were going to run in such fashion. Which was all BS marketing. Not really needed. 720P @30FPS running on a 1080P set, while being smooth as butta is fine with me.

5.5 - @ Statix
Statix if I'm not mistaken Ratchet runs at a solid 60 FPS here is the producer quoted answering a question on the PS blog:

"60fps and 720p is the preferred hi-res resolution. However, we do support 1080i so everyone with a HDTV can enjoy RCF:ToD in all it’s hi-def glory"

so if they can achieve a solid 60 FPS with such beautiful graphics in a year of the PS3 life maybe just maybe 4 years from now they can achieve 1080p @ 60FPS.

Ratchet is a great looking 60hz game, that I agree with you. But you have to understand that 1080p is TWICE the pixel resolution of 720p. That's a LOT of extra pixels to render, and a big performance drainer. I don't really see the PS3 achieving more or less two times the rendering performance of Ratchet, at least not in the near future.

5.7 - @ Statix
You’re right about doubling the pixels, but what I’m saying is that the PS3 is still young to really know, the jump between the early games on the PS2 like FF X and MGS 2 and the latest games like FF XII, MGS 3 and God of War was huge, I’m willing to give the PS3 the benefit of the doubt.

Anyway I’m waiting to see if the DigiGuys (Wardevil) can achieve what they promise in their engine (1080P @ 60, real time or something like that.

yeah I read somewhere I don't remember, but I did read somewhere, that MGS4 runs in 1080p. The game runs smooth at 60 fps, but when the action starts to get heavy it switches to 30 fps. I can't find the article but I did read it. But I never thought they would be able to pull that off for a multiplayer game.

I'm pretty sure P2P. Generally, you don't need dedicated servers unless you hit 32 players and up (ie, Resistance which hits 40 players and has dedicated servers).

If you read the description on the BETA on the Store (Europe) it says;

"Network Players 2-16
HDTV screen Resolution 720p
SIXAXIS Motion Sensitive"

Dunno what this source is on about TBH. I know MGS4 will be 1080p and therefore the retail release of MGO, but is the BETA? Unless the Store made a mess up.

14 - Great News
This not only about metal gear, it is about the real power of ps3 that can handle a game with a very impressive graphics like metal gear with a very hight resolution 1080P, this give a indication to what except from PS3 if it is being used right...

Thanks for good news

15 - Ok let's get this straight for all the fan boys
If the game runs at 1080P (this is a standard). Then the game must run at 1920x1080 resolution. Instead, MGO is 960x1080 so the vertical resolution is half of the 1080P standard. While it's better then COD4 which runs at 1024x600 it's still not real 1080P. Now when the PS3 renders and outputs a game like MGS4 at 1080P that would be truly impressive.

15.1 - Ummm..
Just because someone "Believes" the game to be 960x1080 doesnt mean its fact. Wait until someone does a REAL hardware test, before you believe what some random guy in a forum thought was possible. If you went through the entire forum you'd know he had no Proof. He was just assumed cause it "Seemed" to be H-Scaled. Why not 1280x1080??? exactly!! you dont know. so shut it.

issa3032 - 623 days 2 hours ago
15.2 -
Sorry I think you misunderstood. The game native resolution MAY be 1080 vertical resolution and 960 horizontal resolution and then the horizontal pixels are doubled via upsscaling to 1920. So technically it is still 1080P :)
Shut this user up Let user speak
bpmurr - 623 days 1 hour ago
15.3 - @issa3032
Technically it's not 1080P. 1080P implies there is a 1920 vertical resolution going along with the 1080 horizontal resolution.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

With that said I have MG4 on preorder and will download the beta soon to check it out. I just get tired of people throw terms around that aren't right. Probably the same people that called NES games "tapes".
