For Adults Only: Sex, Violence, Gambling, & Vegetables

Since the Interactive Digital Software Association (now known as the Entertainment Software Association) formed the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) in 1994, the body has rated almost 15,000 pieces of software for consoles, handhelds and personal computers. Of those 15,000 products just 23 have been given the "Adults Only" rating (by contrast, over 9,300 have been given the "Everyone" tag.) To receive this rating, the ESRB states "Titles rated AO (Adults Only) have content that should only be played by persons 18 years and older.

Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity." This differs from "Mature" rated games, which "have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language."

1.2 - I wish there were more AO games....
We're like the only medium that holds back because a kid could possibly get a hold of an adult game. Not to say that the Mature rated games have to go away. Imagine the AO directors cut version of GTA being available and the Mature version being out there as well. I know which one I'd get.

9,300 of 15,000? That's almost two thirds. Could some one please slap this in the face of the media next time they claim games is just about killing?

4 - AO games...
They can keep them for all I care. IMHO the best games I have played have been in the Teen and Mature rating ranges. I have yet to see or hear of a decent game that has been labled AO and I doubt I will see any in the near future that will be any better than what we have today.

I Think if there is no advancement in trying to get more AO games out in the next 4-5 years then there wont be more AO games for the foreseeable future. It's kinda stupid it's gotten to the point that more adults plays games than kids so why not make more games for them? Alot of the stuff developers have to worry about when making a game is retarded just look at the Mass Effect thing. What was in that scene is nothing that wouldn't be in a PG-13 movie yet because it was in a game it was called "porn". It's views like that that need to change and Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft not allowing AO games on the consoles doesn't help either. Like alot of people in the industry have been saying We need a big name player to make a game that would get that rating and then challenge it and if they don't win then try to still market the game and see how far they can push it.
