Playstation Store, Why the Lack of PS One Classics?

Launching in 1995, the Playstation is home to hundreds of titles, including some instant classics like Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, and Resident Evil. It is disheartening that only a small fraction of the library has managed to make their way onto Sony's digital distribution gaming portal, the Playstation Store. In about 1.5 years of existence, the Playstation Store only has 20 "PS one Classics" titles. So what is the reason behind the slow output of PS one Classics on the Playstation Store? Let's take a look at a couple of factors.

Lack of Resources
The Playstation Store is part of the Playstation Network. Sony's online network for the Playstation 3 and PSP is still in the infant stages of development and a work-in-progress. Resources that can be used to put more content, including Ps one Classics, on the Playstation Store are being used up on other projects such as firmware updates, the Playstation Home and redesigning the Playstation Store itself.

PS1 classics will come but maybe they just don't have the bandwidth to really expand their download service into ps1 classics yet.

maybe not but the quality of the titles they have up is poor (the euro store anyways). they really stretch the term classics! they need to get more titles up like....er....cool boarders.....hmm. but seriously me and my cousin played that for hours on end when he got it for ps1 ( ahh simpler times). he downloaded it for his ps3 and we had a blast playing it! thats really what i want from the classics.

I don't think it's the bandwidth as much as the resource and license, most of which should be rectified with time.

Ruibing has it, but that still doesn't excuse the lack of PS first party games that should be up. I'd still be complaining about this if I didn't have a custom firmware enabled PSP that allowed me to rip my own games to it.

3.1 - Exactly,
I could have written this; its just a rant cleaned up into a blog. He makes some good points though, except for the part about Sony's resources. Sony is a huge company and can do whatever it wants. I don't think they did enough market research before launch compared with M$ about the viability of downloadable classics.

Sony has a huge library of PS1 classics, and there is NO excuse for them not competeting harder with M$. I think they are leaving money on the table. Parasite Eve, Einhander, Omegaboost, and those are just the games I LIKED. They need to step it up and get rid of this region garbage.

The Japanese get RE2, but not the US? Ummmm, which country sold the most copies? The same country that will probably have the most downloads.

I'd be interested in some PS2 classics personally, they'd be a lot bigger file size though.

4.1 - Good idea but...
Why don't you just buy the PS2 game? Im sure you can find just about any PS2 game somewhere and it will probably be cheaper than the PS Store version. Play can still play them on your 20gb/60gb/80gb PS3 or you probably still have tour old PS2. PS2 "classic" just dont make much sense right now.

There are a few PS1 games I'd like and there are even more PS2 games I want all the more. But I'd rather Sony concentrated on Home and other things instead of PS1 games.

That said how hard can it be to upload the games?

I think they won't get more aggrasive with the psone classics until they sell a certain amount of PS3 games. They want us to buy PS3 games more than PSone classics.

The fact that the japanese store has tons of the ps1 games makes most of this guys arguments invalid.

I think it'd be cool to download your own PS1 games to your PS3 so you can play them on your PSP/PS3. I'd love to play FFVII and FFIX on PS3 without having to put the disk in(i lose them all the time!), and playing it on the go. I know you can sort of do that with some games. The soundtracks at least. I tried Die Hard 2 for PS1 and I could copy all the audio tracks on the CD. Track 1 doesn't work though. Same with Twisted Metal 3

well i think this person makes a small case but his case fails, why? well even though is all sony, the people who take care of the firmware updates are a different group from the people who deal with home and work on the psn, heck the guy in charge of home doesn't even deal with firmwares, most of these are done by the engineering core in japan, this group was once lead by the all mighty ken before he departed.

i mean if you open a Japanese account than you are more likely to visit a ps store full of psone classics, so.. this doesn't hold much water.

its like saying the people who work on the 360 hardware has to be responsible for xbox live, do you know how ridiculous this sounds?

its the same for sony here, they have different groups who take care of different things, but of course each team sits tight until given an order or something. thats how it works, its not a 35 men team its a worldwide company.

13.1 - i agree nintendo is really about online that much
and look at thier library?

nintendo focuses on gamers first , sony is too busy worrying about what else the ps3(non-game related) besides the fact, most of the functions are not used.

sony's priority has not been gamers imo

13.2 - well..
well unlike sony nintendo doesn't have to worry about damaging ps2 sales so.. so they cant just go around providing ps2 software if its still got a system in the market?

the other issue here would be, sony's actually working on newer games at a next level than say just give you a few games here and there with that gap filled with retro games?

the wii offers all these games yet there is no hard drive to be found, also sony out the two seems to be making newer games rather than just port retro games, i mean echochrome? calling all cars? are just a few so... it wasn't until recently nintendo announced wii ware? so... yeah i do agree with some here sony needs to get its act together regarding this issue, but i also sense they perhaps been over looking this. maybe a thing call home? has gotten to their heads? i don't know, but i atleast expect them to introduce a greatest hits line up for ps3 software sometime this year..

but for the most par i do feel maybe we are asking for too much, but part of me feels like man you guys are right we deserve this. so sony if you read this or hear about this get to work.

17 - ps1?
i wouldn't worry too much about the lack of ps1 classics, especially since we have a giant list of ps3 exclusives coming to us in the next 2 years, sony has focused more on maintaining those exclusives than putting ps1 classics on the ps3 a major priority...true there is a lack of ps1 classics but the ps3 is still fairly new, and even tho the wii does have a huge library to download, it doesn't necessarily mean that the ps3 won't be able to have that library or something close to it by the end of the year...sony is trying to make sure that the ps3's online capabilities become a better value for the consumer than the 360's...as of right now, it's impossible to expect sony to deliver all the titles people desire, but it's still hard to see why we in the US don't have as many titles as the japan online store, but it's okay tho i'm just going to wait until they perfect whatever they have in store for the ps3 this year before demanding what i want from it's online store

18 - Could it be...
that no one is buying the PS1 games that are already up? Maybe the reason Japan has so many is that they are selling like hot-cakes over there. I know I've only bought one and I've hardly played it so I would be hard pressed to buy another.
I've gotta stay off the Playstation store when I've been drinking.

19 - Sony has rights
Sony is either being slow about ps1 classics or doing it on purpose. for ex. like in-game xmb, Sony has a x amount of right to all games even 3rd party.

but I am sure there has to be a lot of process to do to get this going.

The EU store has Kula World and that was enough to make me happy. Hell, I only bothered to get my PS3 online just so I could get that damn game.

Kula World! I suggest everyone who can get it, does. If you like puzzle games that is.

21 - PS1 titles?
I'm sorry, I'm too busy playing all the newer arcade style games and the new PS3 releases to even bother with the PS1 titles available now. Any more would just be fluff in the PSN store that would get no attention from me.

What I do want are more maps for PAIN and a few more bowling partners for High Velocity Bowling. Hey and another HD shooter would be cool. I love the new games, they can keep the old ones.

this is the problem with sony they make amazing hardware with their partners but are slow and shocking with software

there should be a universal games console

Hardware = SONY
Software = Microsoft
online = Microsoft
games = All
