What Is "Next Gen"?

Ask any game developer what sort of feature that the title in question includes, chances are the first thing they mention is the "next gen" graphics, or physics, etc; Of course, it has not taken long for people to start to ask whether features can be next gen or not. After all, all three platforms have been out for over a year. Speaking of which, what about the Wii? Is it truly a "new gen" console? What is "next gen"? What is "new gen"?

1 - Little Big Planet

Little Big Planet and what Sony is planning to do with the PS Eye.
Being able to motion control the XMB and being able to draw things and drop the into games, is next-gen to me.

Calling people fanboys all the time, seems to be next-gen aswell.

Don't forget that, technically, the Wii can detect finger movement. However, Nintendo hasn't created a tool or peripheral to utilize this technology. It's really cool stuff. Here are some links to Johnny Lee's videos.

I'll bet I've been gaming quiet a bit longer than you have, and rest assured in 10 years none of the things you posted will be common knowledge.

Atari era- birth of videogames
Nintendo/Sega- first games to have a story or game ending
Playstation era- 3d graphics and disc media
Xbox era- online gaming and connectivity

All of the things you mentioned have happened already in gaming, but hordes of people aren't talking about it now.

Ps1-Ps2 both had a defect rate very similar to the 360, they just didn't have 3 red lights to help you remember.

3DO was $700 when it launched in 1993.

And gaming gimmicks come and go all the time, but a whole era has never been known for it. Light guns, ball controllers, racing wheels, flight sticks...hell I've even seen the game Afterburner built into a full gyroscopic c0ckpit in an arcade.

Oblivion easily did for me when it came out. I didn't get to play untill the PS3 version came out but when I saw it on pc, my jaw hit the floor. Then again when I played Assassin's Creed, I couldn't believe how great that game looked.....ya, its repeditive, but that is defintely a next gen game.

Next gen is something that you haven't experience in the previous gen
e.g.
-Wii - it has revolutionize what game has never has experience before in term of gameplay but not graphic

-Ps3- it has change what you have experience in your living room previously in term of graphic (high definition gaming experience), for gameplay it has also give players to experience it revolutionize controller (six-axis), but not only that it has given a step forward in next gen format of high-def movie format (Blueray-DVD,

-X-box 360 - it has change what you have experience in your living room previously in term of graphic (high definition gaming experience), it also have revolutionize of it controller that tend to focus on FPS games (changing the place analog stick with direction button around), although it has revolutionize in some aspect but it still consider a step backward (DVD for games, no hdmi port on lauch console until the latter sku). With the mistake of having dvd for gaming leave them issuing with disc scratches but not only that it has no standard Hard drive on it platform.

Next-gen is the next-generation of ANYTHING. Technically all machines are next-generation iterations of their predecessors. The only next-gen console with a next-gen format is PS3 though.

Lol me and you keep seeming to share similar views - I agree with what you said indeed. All the three consoles, the PS3, The 360 and the Wii possess technologically advanced features that put them in the category of "next-gen", each with varying degrees though:

The Wii - This has mastered the art of wireless motion-controlled video gaming with it's Wiimote device, has some really fun games and seems to have no major hardware problems. However it's inability to display hi-def graphics, a games library for a less diverse audience and it's limited online capabilities make it the least next-gen of the three.

The Xbox 360 - Yes this has hi-def graphics, a more diverse game library with really good games, downloadable content, excellent online capabailities/features but it misses out on some other vital features. No HHD and HDMI output in a majority of older machines, no hi-def disc format (still using DVDs, and add-ons are a dated idea) and no Wi-Fi. Plus most importantly it has a serious hardware problem with it's serious failure rates (RROD). Looks like it was rushed onto the market too early and failed to take these features into account - therefore it does not appear to be the complete next gen console.

The PS3 - It has hi-def graphics with the maximum scaling level ( true 1080p), has hi-def disc format (Blu-Ray), a solid and growing amount of good titles in it's expaning and diverse games library, HDMI output, HHD, Wi-Fi, downloadable content and quite good, but still improving online capabilities/features. It does not seem to have any major hardware failure problem either. It appears to contain all or nearly all the features that a next gen console should have - making the PS3 most next gen console of them all.

This is not fanboy stuff, these are facts about all three consoles expressed here to formulate and conclude my view.

Whats sad is that in this current age of technology that the 360 can display hi-def-style graphics but cant play any hi-def disc formats, only DVDs. Whats also sad is that the Microsoft only realised very late on that they needed to put HMDI outputs in their consoles. And it is sad that the 360 has no HDD. The 360 does not always play the same games better than the PS3, thats old news now. Check the reviews of the best recent multi-plats and you will see they favour the PS3 versions (Burnout Paradise, DMC4, COD4). Unchartered has graphics that make it look better than any 360 game out there. That game is really what can called next-gen stuff. I'm sorry that you find it sad when people say these things about the 360, but it is the truth in cold hard facts.

you say the 360 had no HDD, well what is that thing attached to the side of my 360 its not a fax machine!! plus the ONLY game that has been favoured on the PS3 has been burnout!! DMC4 the 360 version has slightly better textures an doesnt require an install, the controller is only a matter of opinion!! I didn't have any problems beating the game with the 360 controller!! an COD4 are you serious!! the games ARE 98% the same but... the 360 version just like DMC4 has the better textures which give it an overall better look just like AC.

I think MS put HDMI in their systems because no matter how much they insisted it wasnt needed for GAMES, many people looked at it as a WEAKNESS to the PS3, so they added it!! but with no hi def MOVIE format why was it needed!!

an what the hell is HI Def STYLE!! theres no such thing!! its either Hi Def or its not!! when it comes to Hi Def GAMES, what has the PS3 been able to do that the 360 hasnt!!

Ps3 is a trojan horse for blu-ray movies first and foremost. It's certainly not the best game console on the market. It's cpu (Cell) is garbage for game development, and it really shows in multi-plats and lengthy dev cycles on exclusives. You sony kids can spew your mislead fanboy tripe til' your blue in the face, facts are facts. I don't live in la-la land where you people do, that's why I sold my ps3.
