Will the Nintendo Wii outlive both the PS3 and Xbox 360?

Despite being light years behind the PS3 and Xbox 360 in terms of technical and graphical capabilities, the Wii is outselling both of them at a preposterous rate each month. Which begs the question: Will the Wii actually outlive its superior rivals?

The Nintendo Wii isn't really in the same fight as the PS3 and Xbox 360, it's on a totally different plain of existence. Whether you think its ahead or behind its rivals though is down to personal perspective, and what you value most in a games console.

lol you are funny. The 360 will outlive the PS3.

The day will never, ever happen where Microsoft supports a gaming system longer than Sony. It will never happen and to think so shows a lack of understanding about the industry.

As for the best games and the best games to look forward to, thats a personal decision and one that I can respect. But please dont deduce from your personal opinions facts that many industry analysts simply know to be untrue. I am willing to bet my house that the PS3 will outlive the 360.

The ps3 will outlive the 360, even Microsoft knows it. I doubt the wii will outlive either of them. Sooner or later the wii effect always fades. I have seen it time and time and again.
1. My roomate waited in the cold all night for a wii i was so excited to play it
2. red steel was the best game ever. Wii sports was too fun. I can't wait to get my hands on the wii.
3. 2 days later lets go back and play ps2.

360, ps3 and even ps2 gets more gameplay than wii from me and my roomates. When a girl comes over sure she can play and amuse herself with it while we watch. After she is done she comments on how much funner wii is to play. I shake my head. If you are a casual gamer that might play a game an hr a week sure its great for you. But i play games a lot more than that and the wii fails to grasp my attention for too long and worse the more you play it the less it grabs you. sooner or later everyone will realize and will move on.

Purely opinion so feel free to disagree

in a word....yes. technology will always continually get better and better. but affordability and casual appeal will always prolong a console's lifetime.

2.1 - Not so sure
See there's a little game called "Super Smash Bros" coming out pretty soon.

Yeah, y'know, it's not like it's popular or anything, but I hear it might sell a couple copies.

Melee was popular too... but it didn't save the Game Cube.

What will ultimately kill the Wii is what killed the N64 and Game Cube, the lack of third party support.

Although Wii initially gained a lot of third party support as proven by announcements by Square Enix, Capcom and various other big companies. It's also quite evident that their sales number is not good enough.

The most logical business choice for third parties would be to go with X360 or PS3. Though I do hear that it's a lot cheaper to build games for the Wii so I dont know. But I really don't think the Wii software sales do justice to their games so far.

I believe that the hardware inside the PlayStation 3 prevents it from being outmoded or phased out until at least 2015.

I see the Wii able to last very long as well, but ONLY as long as good software remains for it.

The 360 I feel, only has one thing that really gives it longevity...is Xbox Live. But once Home comes out....we'll see what that does to people who realize they could get the same or better services from Home, for free.

well i think you are right but I believe we will see the ps4 before 2015. At the earliest I think we will see a new PS around xmas of 2011 and latest around mid 2013. The new xbox at the earliest is xmas of 09 and the latest mid 2011.

I cant even begin to predict about the wii, its just too much of an unknown. If i really had to guess though it would be 2010-2011.

I'd expect the ps4 around November 2012. Sony is a very consistent brand.

As for Wii, who knows? The majority of their install base aren't tech heads nor do they really care.

I'd expect a new xbox before the other two being that it directly competes with Sony, and their superior machine.

Also, why was my comment reported as off topic up there?

That comment Jack T made is fanboyish and doesn't belong in the gamer zone.

That's BS, man.

I think his comment violates that.

That is all.

I don't even know who's buying the Wii. I don't know one person who has one,or one person that plans on buying one. To be honest I have never even seen one.I'm not kidding. All I know is I'm a little old for Mario and friends. Kind of out grew them about 20 years ago. So I'd have to say no.

The Wii won't have GTA 4, bye bye. As for who will last the longest? I think the PS3 will, the 360 has a bad rep for being a poorly built machine, plus all those people who buy 1080p sets will, if they don't HATE Sony, will get a PS3 for the Blu-Ray drive.

I just bought a Wii even thought I admit I thought it was a gimmick. i'm having fun with Mario Galaxy, Zelda Twilight princess, no more heroes, zack and wiki, and metroid 3. Tomorrow I get Smash Brothers brawl. I was wrong about wii. it's a fun system. you just have to be aware that there's a lot of shovelware for the system, however there are quality games also. As far as outliving, I don't think so. nintendo will come out with an HD system in a few years.

what people always seem to forget is that game designers want to be at the cutting edge of theyre industry and working on the wii is like the stuff they were making for the ps2 5 years ago. Game programers are like us, they want to play next gen not last gen. They need to be excited about going to work.

12 - Once my grandma is dead, the Wii is dust
A few soccer moms might carry it for awhile but soon they'll get bored with it (like the people who actually play games) and go back to their affairs with the pool cleaner.

" The Wii won't have GTA 4, bye bye. "
XD
now really, does the Wii really need GTA?
3rd party developers keep coming to the wii, even for WiiWare.

@midgard
" answer is they wont last to the core gamer "
another "XD"
you really think nintendo needs to?

" so they play it safe "
like you so called hardcore gamers, who keep thinking the old fashioned way. 90% on this website is anti wii, simply because its different from your standard expectations.

OT:
i really don't think it matters, when its time all 3 will release a new console. Simple as that. Wii games do not need to sell the same amount of games as PS3 or 360 games to turn it into a profit. developers know this too.

Remember PS2 sold for a long time, but the library was also loaded with crap( not saying all games are). So what will stop the Wii? core gamers didnt get every game on the PS2 now did you people?

Who cares? The Wii's in a different ballgame. I'm sure once Wii2 is released the good first party games will stop, and lets be honest that's all Nintendo has going for it. No way it lasts without support.
