Halo 3 Wins Visual Effects Award

Gamedaily.biz reports that Halo 3 may have lost out to the likes of BioShock, Call of Duty 4 and Portal in previous award shows, but the game has been honored with a visual effects award from the Visual Effects Society.

Montreal-based visual effects and animation studio damnfx, which contributed over 20 minutes of key-frame character animation to the cinematic sequences in Microsoft's Halo 3, announced that cinematics director CJ Cowan and his team at Bungie Studios have won an award from the Visual Effects Society (VES) for Best Real Time Visuals in a Video Game.

Yeah, no kidding. There are numerous titles on both the 360 and PS3 that are more deserving of an in-game visuals award. Not to mention the 800lb gorilla in the room, Crysis.

I don't think so. I don't play tons of Halo but alot of people mose so quickly thru it they don't stop and take a look at what's going on awound. The in game wind and water effects are great. I also like the light that shines thro the forest canopy. People don't really understand how beautiful this game is.

By that standard uncharted is far better... When you walk through water in uncharted the water ripples realisticly propogating out and away from your character, then when you exit the water your clothes eerily reflect their wetness... But beyond that crysis was by far the best looking game of the year but I guess they dq'ed it for being a pc game...

First of all this is visual effects smart @ss, second of all have you played uncharted? There is no rhyme or reason why uncharted was ignored as a graphical masterpiece... Could be an industry bias, I dont know but this game is amazing... No other game has ever had a character whos clothes looked wet when he got out of the water and then dried as he progressed.. Thats a huge graphical undertaking and naughty dog was screwed for being overlooked on this gem.....

pop in ? about 3-4 times or 1 second (there are textures but they change to better res. textures)
Screen tearing ? nope heres no any (i finish uncharted about 4-5 times)

This game has best graphic for consoles from overal graphic point but i think that Gran Turismo: Prologue is the most photoresalisic

The *only* method to shut them up is to look at the piles of awards, and the metacritic average review scores.

Halo 3 was widely praised for its visual effects, graphics, gameplay, story, animation -- everything! It was GotY many places, and has a metacritic score that exceeds all but a couple games in 2007.

So, in the face of the stellar success and wonderful gameplay that Halo 3 is awarded -- you choose to just MAKE SHIAT UP and talk out your anus?

IMO although in no way should Halo win for best visual effects, it still was my fav game of 2007. The epic conclusion, four player co-op, and playing online is just in a league of its own. (edging out call of duty because of the co-op)

you want FACTS do back to any website or magazine or show (E3) that gave awards for best graphics and you will learn that Uncharted was not even in the top two. It was always Bioshock or COD4

you want more FACTS, go to the website you pointed out, GAMETRAILERS.com and you will learn Call of Duty 4 got a 9.8 compared to Uncharted's 9.7 in the graphics department.

Learn facts, and them come back at me kid. I've seen and played Uncharted, and looks awesome. Better than Call of Duty 4...hell NO.

i recently bought my ps3 and i playing uncharted, i has to say that is the best looking game at least on consoles. xbox enthusiast may say gear

PS3 fanboys are confusing standard graphics with environmental visuals effects and more.

The game has always been championed as the greatest in visual effects before Sony fanboys torn down the game.

The HDR is so dam advanced no other game I'v seen has lighting so real. Fuc the glare is well done shining when things are suppose to shine. Mist, smoke, haze in the rays of light.

If they added Halo 3's effects in action adventure games it would be very emmersive.

Its like a lighting engine or something thats far more active, responsive and more realalistic is working in real time to best display lighting depending on whats going on.

Its clear if you're bashing you either are confused in what they mean or you never played the game.

Sony fanboys keep bringing up Uncharted, does UNDF charted even have any advanced HDR in it?, I thought they had to dumb down the Unreal engine to get it to work on PS3 and HDR was one of the features stripped. Could be wrong so tell me if I'm wrong Sony fanboys.

Yup. The one thing people forget is that Halo 3's HDR is the best in any game to date. No game comes close. And you're right about the glare on objects. It's just so shiny and amazing. It's well worth losing a few "Ps". Damn sony droids care more about how many lines they are seeing instead of enjoying a truly next-gen game. Stupid fanboys make me sick. Too bad no one has told them that tons of PS3 games run a lower than 720p rez. OOPS. '1080p on two displays at 120 frames a second each', what? I thought so. This game was nominated for 6 awards at the AIAS for graphics...it was robbed by forces unknown. But read the comments from the address on youtube, and read what dual owners, 360, and PS3 owners say! Bungie have always used the game engine for the ingame movies and not some CGI. They arn't the first to do it, but they are the first to do it well. The lighting and cinimatics of the cutscenes are so good, they make you think it's CGI and, I'm sure the casual gamers assume that it is.

Dude, you're an idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about. Bathyj is right METAL GEAR SOLID series has always used in game engine. From MGS1 up through to MGS3 (And if you didn't know, which wouldn't surprise me, MGS4 uses the engine for cut scenes too.)

If you ever needed further proof Halo is overrated, there you go.

Best Real Time Visuals in a Video Game, are you FKN kidding me? GRAW 1, an XB launch game has better graphics than Lego Halo. Dont even get me started on Uncharted, Ratchet, Heavenly Sword or Motorstorm.

You guys might love Halo's multiplayer to death and think its the best game ever created and thats fine. I dont agree, but each to their own, but no one ever pretended it had great graphics.

Even the bots used to say its not about the graphics with Halo its the best online game. I'm not even convinced the improvement from part 2 to part 3 is even as good as the improvement from part 1 to part 2. I guess it might be a benefit of the low rez but at least the first 2 didn't have such horrible jaggies. Its was nearly as bad as Forza 2.

If you've ever asked yourself if you're an Xbot or not, and you agree with this travesty of an award, the answer is yes.
