Sony PlayStation: The First 20 Years

Following on from the news that Phil Harrison, Sony's Head of Worldwide Studios, is set to move on to pastures new later this month, TechRadar decided it would be timely to take a look back at 20 years of PlayStation - one of the most iconic gaming devices ever made.

Emerging one generation after the Sega Megadrive and Nintendo's SNES, PlayStation took gaming to a new level of performance and convenience and the brand has established itself as the most powerful in the history of gaming.

Nearly 300 million PlayStation-branded consoles have been bought worldwide, the most successful model being the PS2 which has contributed over 120 million sales on its own. However, success didn't come easily. Here's TechRadar's 20-year timeline that plots the history and the development of the Sony PlayStation story.

I've always loved the delicious irony that came from Nintendo snubbing Sony regarding the SNES-CD add-on, and then Sony coming back and slaughtering Nintendo for 2 console generations in a row.

Must've been especially painful when Squaresoft left Nintendo almost entirely because the PS1 used CD's and the Nintendo 64 didn't, in perhaps one of the stupidest decisions, ever.

"Why would we use CD's?! We have media that holds less and costs significantly more to make...but has faster load times!"

I was 12 or 13 at that time and I STILL knew Nintendo was making a horrible decision.

7 - Things i found most remarkable about this artice was
They had sold around 3,400,000 ps1 consoles in just over a year and had a library of 16 games... wow, now we are upset when a new console only releases with 16 games. Also 3.4 million ww after a full year of release WW, So far they have almost 11 million and it still has not been out 1 year WW. And last but not least, the PS1 released for $300.00 USD, and we all must realize that even at that time, compared to everthing else it was not nearly as tech. advanced as the PS3 is to everything else these days.

the man is a legend- he revolutionized gaming and his eagerness to innovate and advance technology has led to some amazing consoles

it's because of him the PS3 has Blu-Ray and Cell- you know Sony wanted to exclude these things because they needed to get the PS3 out the same time as the 360 and rely on brand recognition to win?

Kutaragi went against that and won, just like when he introduced the Playstation to Sony and got rejected, but he fought the war and won

I hope that in the future I can play a Playstation brand console with my grand kids (seeing the long cycles of the PS brand my guess that it would be Playstation 5)
