Warning: Look Out For The Philips TVs That Aren't Compatible With The PS3

A MaxConsole reader recently purchased a new Philips 37" TV in order to play his PS3 on. After a while he started noticing a small interlacing flicker even in 1080p even when browsing the menu of the PS3. But after playing Everybody's golf, the real problem started as he wasn't able to pull of a perfect shot (something of which he could do easily on other friend's TVs). He tried all sorts of combinations before concluding the TV is slow, about 1/10 of a second latency between the PS3 and the picture. So ultimately, he sent along an e-mai to Philips who asked him to understand that a TV is not manufactured with the standards of PS3 games.

1.2 - Wow, that would be a 100 ms refresh time???
They should put a big warning on the box. Most HDtvs are below 6 ms refresh rate today. Somehow I doubt it though. I don't even think there's an LCD with such a low refresh rate on the market. They would only be good for flight display in airports, but even then, with such a slow refresh rate, you could miss a flight ; )

i myself have a philips 32" LCD 1080i,720p HDTV with pixel plus 3HD and it works grate with my PS3. so i don't what this guy talking about and why do people thing this is some how the PS3 doing? lol. my philips has a 8ms pixel response time btw and works grate like i said before. and this is coming from a guy that plays COD4 all day long and i never had any slow response time on my image, so am guessing this must be the older philips HDTV and not the new ones like my.

You fail to see a standard corporate responce. You call most (not all) TV companies about how any game console doesnt work right on their TV, you are getting a similar responce.

2.6 - It's not a PS3 issue
For clarification, this is not a PS3 issue, it's a TV issue. This TV would have the same exact problem on a 360 or a Wii.

Let me translate: "Our TV SUCKS"

Comon now it's a HDTV with 1080p and it can't handle playing games? That's a shame Philips...FOR SHAME.

Meh My 52-inch Bravia beats his TV anyday.

Safe to assume I won't be purchasing Phillips television in the future.

Not saying Philips is a bad brand either. But as a buyer, you need to check into all these concerns. It goes beyond PS3 too. Some people like watching sports, but some HDTVs won't show sports properly (leaving a trail behind the movement).

Bet this TV was cheap

8 - It should be the same with a 360 or pc.
The tv (crystals or the gas isnt capable of changing fast enough) is obviously to slow to keep up with the ps3, it should be exactly the same thing if u hook up a 360 or pc to it.

If i get disagrees could you please explain yourself..

Edit: I bet this tv has a response time of 12ms, u should have atleast 8ms, best would be 4ms.. Edit 2: The response time is how long it will take for the crystal or gas depending on if it´s a plasma or lcd tv to change.

No, what you're talking about is LCD ghosting. This is the motion blur effect that's caused by what you're referring to, the pixels or mirrors that constitute the screen not changing fast enough, and this is typically what the manufacturers rate in the specifications for a TV (e.g. 4 ms, 8 ms, 16 ms...).

This "LCD ghosting" has NOTHING to do with the video signal delay that actually messes up your gameplay performance. The lag or delay that this article is referring to is much longer and more bothersome.

Thanks for the clearification, i have played with LCD ghosting and i thought it was annoying. If this is worse i can imagine it would be a real pain.

not sure if this is an isolated incident or not, because I gamed on a 27" Philips for years (during the PS2 period) and it was *outstanding. Philips doesn't really manufacture a bad product per se, but this particular model discussed in the article may be some kind of bare bones set with very limited features / performance.

10 - Many LCD TVs have this problem.
Many HDTVs, especially LCDs and DLPs, out there are afflicted with this issue. It's because certain TVs are slower at processing the video signal than others, and this is what causes the noticeable delay between your button presses and the action occurring on the screen. More TV manufacturers definitely need to be made aware of this issue, and I believe they will, eventually, as videogames continue to become more and more a part of mainstream entertainment culture. But, we still need to do our part and notify/bother/complain to the TV companies about it.

Another post full of facts eh Mart!?

Perhaps it's an HDMI issue - so maybe the 360 would work better. After all, most 360's sold have no HDMI port so good OLD component might just be to the 360's advantage.

from what Ive read there are many LCD's that have a lag problem especially when playing halo online and thats why people with tube tvs usually do better when playin halo or any other fps games because they have a second advantage

11.4 - How can you tell?
How do you know the 360 works fine on that tv?
Do you know personaly someone who owns this tv and has a 360?

To me its either a defective set or yes it has slow refresh.

To start saying again and again that its ps3 fault or that its 360 fault is getting retarded. Seem like every post is fanboyish in here. Getting pretty tiring. For every good post 4 are crap like that.

N4g is awesome... quick news for gamer , interesting articles from all over the place and its about GAMING . please let it just be that. NEWS 4 GAMERS its not N4F (news 4 Fanboy)

Claim it's not fit for purpose and get it refunded under warranty. If the TV is sold as HD Ready (and has the sticker on it), then it should work with any HD device.

Support the tv manufacturers that support gaming. At least if the tv doesnt work with a console then you can could probably return it for a refund. This is just plane bad luck and shody design on phillips part. I had to return a Harman Kardon amp cause it wouldnt work with my 360 optical out. Even had to set the thing up in futureshop to prove it but they did give me a refund and some stuff for my hassles (free 4 year extended on my new lcd tv worth $400 and a $70 hdmi cable. Futureshop rules. The moral of the story though is buyer beware and do your fakin research before dropping that kind of money.

"I don't beleive this."
Did you mean to say "believe?"

Also, "...but consumer electronics company's too."
You should have used "companies" instead of "company's" which is a possessive and not correct for this sentence.

Who should have stayed in school?

I have a Philips 37" 9732 - I'm using it right now with this PC. Many people don't seem to understand what the problem is here. Comments/users stating TV response times are talking of something else entirely. The 9732 I own has a response time of 3ms, which is fantastic. I've yet to see any smearing at all. What the article describes is the time the TV takes to display the image at all. Not the time to update it. So, yes, it takes ~100ms to display the image. In regard to the actual image quality, this 100ms lag figure is completely irrelevant.

From my experience so far, this lag is only really noticeable on games that require very fast reactions, such as first person shooters - which I play frequently. For other types of games most players probably wouldn't even notice the difference.

From my experience, this "Interlacing flicker" is only present when the input is set to "PC". Although not a desirable effect, game consoles do not require the television to be set to "PC" mode. Both my 360, which is set to "Game" and my HD DVD player, which is set to Blu-ray - don't suffer from this issue.

People looking to buy a television specifically for games should look elsewhere. The lag is present and I notice it. Saying that, however, I still wouldn't have bought a different TV. It's still brilliant. ~100ms, that’s 0.1 second. It hasn’t stopped me skilfully playing games
