2 million copies of gears of war...7 weeks on the charts...motorstorm has been on the charts for 42 weeks and is barely at 1.5 million..sad part of that is its bundled with 80 gig machines...

Both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were selling software the previous week at the same rate in respect to ratio of install base. The PlayStation 3 has 1/3rd of the install base Microsoft has, and incidentally also shows 1/3rd of the amount of software sold to the Xbox 360. So it isn't doing "worst" than the Xbox 360; when looking at the software figures its important to also take into consideration the hardware sold.

I'm surprised Nintendo supposedly sold over 700,000 Wii's in just a week. I thought there was a supply issue with the consoles? And yet it sold that much in a week? Wow.

If you want to talk about stats; naturally a console with no competition will do better in general. Nonetheless, its a fact that the Xbox 360 is a software selling machine. But as you're a stats man, I can produce an interesting one to spin a positive light on the PlayStation 3. It has sold atleast 8million consoles worldwide (with its strongest territory, Europe, only launching the console in March) despite its lack of AAA franchises, despite its ridiculous pricepoints and despite the fierce competition from the Xbox 360 and Wii, whereas it took Microsoft almost a year and a half to sell 10million consoles. That's a hardware stat, software stats are rather embarrassing for Sony but this particular past week was not derogative, it's actually respectable for its install base. It is the same ratio as the software king that is the 360. So although it isn't terrific, it's still decent and certainly not bad.

What was Sony's market share last gen? What is Sony's market share now? The PS3 was supposed to sell MORE than the 360, it didn't. You lose. Oh and to answer your first questions the 360 hade HUGE shortages its first 3-4 months, the PS3 has been sitting on the store shelves since about 2 weeks after it launched.

About PS2's market share... How many games are sold there nowadays... yeah lots right... EA (you know the biggest game company in the world) made over 50% of thier money off the 360 last year. More than the Wii, PS2, PS3, PSP, and DS combined.

Why because the more software and hardware sold the greater the support a console will get hence a better game's selection. This is why sales stats is revelent to me at least.

Edit:JU i am not saying it will lead to better sequels rather more software and hardware sales will encourgae devs to develop for a particular platform.It is just common sense. I do not think, that just # sold will guarantee a successful game or a better successor. Often to much money ruins a franchise. A critical number is important to keep a studio alive - but to much money lets it drown. Somewhere in the middle is usually fine to keep them hungry for more.

That said, I am fine with the performance. I think 360 and Wii numbers are overrated. The first 5 titles together make around 2M total sales. The only new title in there is Mario Galaxy (maybe you can call Forza 2 "new" as well), the other 4 are usually bundled (is Wii Play ?), and the top title is Wii Sports. A number alone is just a number. (Btw: #6 TO #20 totals to < 1.9M).

Mighty douche - I think you mean business "sense." And unless Sony or MS has paid a lot of money I would be surprises to see any title remain exclusive - it just doesn't make sense. Especially now that developers are starting to figure out the strengths of both systems and can (if they work at it) make a great game on both systems.

Sure, you lose a few dollars from the idiots that would say - I am not buying it because it isn't exclusive. But the gamers on the other system would more than make up for it. But if you are getting paid ten million then it changes the story a bit.

By the way - see that the Devil May Cry is (allegedly) better on the PS3 because they are allowed to store the game on the HDD - I hope that pushes MS to allow the same thing. In fact, once you do that I think MS wins the console race from a power standpoint because a lot of processing power is being used to decompress the code as it streams off the DVD - if you can do it in advance then you can use that power for other things. Of course, I am not sure anyone really knows how to use the power but that is a different story.

Yes you do have a point however remember the console war is still in its early stages.I am sure developers look to more variables than just current software sales to determine weather to go exclusive. For example Konami might actually have a deal with Sony for the MGS movie which might actually earn them alot of money. Others like hardware specs might also be a big factor as some might want the space provided by blu-ray or the HDMI 1.3 support. Also developers might want to developed exclusively for a system that they think will eventually win so that they will be in a better position when it does. My point is although software sale's is the most important variable to devs. It is not the sole factor to determine development for a particular platform for some devs as there are other factors too. Square i remember repeatly mentioned that the PS3 allows their vision for FF to come true. Who knows?.

Now sonykids are bad mouthing vg chartz again, now their excuse is they inflate 360 #'s when in fact vg chartz inflated ps3 numbers numerous times, in fact it was well discussed that in July vg chartz had ps3 outselling 360 in the US and all the sonykids believed it, because ps3 had actually hit #1 on Amazon with the price drop in July,(thats when Amazon 1st got posted a 100x's) but only later NPD #'s were released in Aug and showed 360 still outsold ps3 in July, did sonykids learn their lesson, HELL NO, they always flaunt vg #'s(mostly for Euro) as the truth when its in ps3 favor and revert back to "vg chartz suck" when its not in ps3 favor,

btw my guess for Wii having the edge on software sales compared to the 360 is more parents buy their kids games for them during Christmas (alot of new wii's sold also) but obviously more games sell for all consoles at Christmas but the wii fanbase is heavily dependant on parents purchasing games for their kids, while most 360 owners are generally older and buy their own games throughout the year.

I have to agree with DrPirate, Sony's marketing in NA really sucks. I cant be sure living in NA but my understanding is that Sony's marketing in EU is a lot more agreesive; but here, even the multiplats commercials end with 360. Gotta give it to MS, they know promotion.

Things are UGLY for PS3 exclusives. Where is Uncharted? I see ads on TV all day long. No way Uncharted or UT3 for the PS3 make a profit. No way. Shame is that they are both good games.

PS3 owners seem to buy multi-platform games though. Must be 360-envy.

Aside from GT5 and one or two other sure-fire AAA games, I doubt there are too many developers that are really dedicated to going that extra mile for the PS3 in the next year or two. Why throw away money? Expect a lot more disappointments, delays, and bad ports for PS3 in 2008.

What I find interesting in this whole thing...

PS3 has sold Less in the US, than in Europe. And in europe they did with way higher prices, more software delay's, and most importantly less time (march 07 lanuch). This is the first Christmas sales in europe.

Like Msoft has said it looks like Europe will be where the "real" battle is won or lost.

To the person above me, Marsattack, Uncharted isn't doing too bad. It's on pace to do better than resistance, even though there is a much better line up of games to choose from. Worldwide it's sold over 500K, and remember it's only been out in Europe for 3 weeks over there, vs. alot longer over in USA.

All in all 08 is shaping up to be much more interesting...

What I find is funny, Obviously Sony is in 3rd place, I'm sure even if you asked Sony fans and sony themselves, they thought they'd do much better but the high prices (Worldwide), games that were comparable on 360 if not better, much better lineup of games on the 360, especially if your FPS fan. But I'm sure if you asked 360 fans, they'd say without a doubt with "Best game lineup, cheaper console, that produce as good or better multiplatform ,better online service", they'd mop up Ps3 in the holidays worldwide, however it doesn't look to be that way. It's definitely not 1 sided, and infact in some cases PS3 might, MIGHT outsell 360 in month Dec. Worldwide, and that's a huge accomplishment for Sony, if these numbers are accurate.

These software sales prove though that Wii and DS are casual gamer consoles. I own both of them for the occasional awesome Nintendo franchises (like Mario, Metroid, Zelda, etc.), but for the most part people are buying these crappy games that take $40 to make. i hate number comparisons like this because they count bundled games.
i know ps3 has a motorstorm bundle in the usa
i think 360 has a 2 game bundle in the usa
and the wii has wii play or something like that.
so you have those numbers tied to hardware sales messing up the count.
and it appears software bought though the psn or xbox live doesnt count. so its missing some warhawk numbers.
i am curious as too the psychology behind 360 owners and ps3 owners. why one buys so many games versus the other. also i wonder how buying used games factors in. you think ps3 owners buy used games whereas 360 owners buy new. lots of questions and factors remain unanswered and unaccounted for.

People, you have to remember that the Wii and DS are advertised to the mass public. They are seen as the latest gadgets to get for Christmas. I'd say that 80% of people who bought these this Christmas will not frequently buy games through out the year. The Wii is now what board playing games where back in the 80s early 90s.

Me personally, I wouldn't be see with a Wii as I class myself as a gamer with high standards. The Wii is for the mass public, those who dont even know what AI is.

Good for Wii, if thats the route its aimed at then congrats, but I dont think we can soon put the PS3/360 in the same band as a Wii.

The games are selling well on both systems. I'm not suprised about UT3 as I haven't seen a single advertisement for that. Uncharted numbers are disappointing, but I picked that up last week to add to my collection of unfinished games. IMO there has been a huge influx of good games and consumers can't keep up. I just bought UT3 and Uncharted last week and still haven't finished COD4, AC and Ninja Gaiden. It's hard to get time to play all the games I have and many people I know w/ a PS3 don't have the means to get them all at once.

PS3 numbers for hardware should be in a diffreent handi-capped catagory. PS3 hardware sales are a now proven foolish gage to predict future dev success.

I never went into the thread so I don't know If some PS3 fanboy claimed worldwide sales with PS3 winning by 20k with the America numbers missing or that if you're misstaken.
PS3 hardware sales are pointless as many people are buying PS3 as a bargon Blu-ray player and does not help Sony(No leverage with devs) nor devs(can't make money on the platform) so they don't really matter anyways. PS3 hardware sales is no way of predicting software sales success.

PS3 sales will probably drop quikly after a few weeks.

almost all of the games on the 360 was made by americans, however it's a good thing that hironobu, itagaki and Kobayashi are supporting the 360.

my opinions on ut3 for ps3, it's a fun game i played it, why it's not selling well for ps3 i don't know, i do know that 9/10ths of the people that i play against on halo3 and Gears are all interested in ut3 ( it's because allot of them were pc gamers to begin with, i saw allot of their profiles ).

Damn allmost outsold 3:1 there, with the pricelevel of 349 dollar for the Premium and 399 for the PS3, they're pretty close to before 399 for the Premium and 499 or even 599 for the PS3 and still it gets beaten up like hell...
