Sony's Lost Exclusives: A Timeline

Having spent a lot of time this afternoon thinking about all the exclusives that PlayStation 3 has lost over the last tumultuous year, we here at Game|Life decided to catalog them in the runup to E3.

I'm not listing franchises that had been exclusive to Sony systems but now have Xbox versions, because that's not the point and because I don't want to be here all day. The exception to this rule is when a publisher was pursuing an exclusive, but Sony didn't sign on. As in the case of...

In my opinion, I can not see the X360 getting a Final Fantasy game at all. I think they've set there engine and game around for the PS3.

As for MGS4, there is still a chance it could end up on the 360.....at some point in the future.

More than likely it will arrive on the X360 at some point, but it won't be announced until after it arrives on the PS3 and sold bucket loads.

The same thing happened with MGS2. It took nearly 2 years for it to arrive on the Xbox. The same could happen with MGS4.

I could be completly wrong, and I'm sure I will have already upset someone out there reading this, but it's what my gut feeling is telling me, and a majority of the time, it's correct!

After E3, we will see how much sony will lose and gain in terms of exclusives for the system, same goes for the 360. right now, theres only 7-8 games jumping ship or going multiplatform. we seen the same thing last gen with the PS2, but at the end of the day ,did people even cared about those games that I mentioned above going multi or jumping ship, maybe a few, but mostly not, cause it gained, games like RE didnt really make people go bananas when it became multi, because theres was a playstation game that was also a survival horror game, Silent hill, Crash Bandicoot?, no one really got angry for that, because a game covered for crash already, Jak and Daxter. yes if Sony starts losing more exclusives,then we can start pushing the panic button, but right now its not a big deal, it becomes a big deal if the system continues to have the same install base that it had month ago so to say. E3, and TGS will make or break sony if it shows the good games which would make the install base

I have always enjoyed Sony platform's mostly for Sony's 1st party games...yeah MGS is great, and FFVII was back in the day (can't really bring myself to get through any others)...but I own a PS3 for the pretty much guaranteed variety you will get from their own games...that no matter what will not be on other systems...I don't care if a game is multi, as long as its done correctly...but there isn't one third party game aside from UT3 coming out this year (and possibly Haze) that has me half as excited as all the 1st party stuff...

MS is starting to impress me more than they ever used to...Halo 1 was great...2 was good for online...and 3 doesn't have me interested at all...Gears was a great change from Halo for me...Mass Effect looks absolutely amazing...but Crackdown and Shadowrun were both mind numbing to me...Gears is literally the only game that made me consider picking one up...next is Mass Effect...but if they are only getting one or two decent 1st party exclusives a year...and everything else being 3rd party multi...I will never buy one...

Most exclusives that are being lost are sequels. I want to see original games on either system like Gears of War and God of war. What happened to creativity. Graphics are important to a extent but if a game can give me ohhhh wow like the first resident evil did. Thats what I am looking for in a game. So I give Sony some props on the new games coming out like lair, Uncharted Drake Fortune, War Hawk. First Party games that are tailored to the systems specs.

and one thing i find strange about game sales, with the install base of 100+ million, game sales for the ps2 games sell only 5-10million each, which is a lot but you think it might be around 65-85million, and you say HS, KZ to sell 110% billion, the ps2 doesn't even hold a record for fastest selling game, yet the small amount of xbox owners, purhcased halo 2 at an amount of 1.4 in one day, but 100 million can't, i find that strange,

All the games you mentioned weren't exlusives on the PS3. They were merely confirmed for the system first. Only DMC game you mentioned used to be a PS3 exlusive. It is being made by Capcom and you know how "loyal" they are if you look at their game releases (RE4 and now DMC). But again, I dont mind if you keep thinking MGS4 and FFXIII will "eventually" come to the 360. Cause I find it funny. Ahhh wishfull thinking.

Yes I know that MGS has been on various platforms, you even forgot to mention GBC, PSP and Wii (SMBB). But so far all the MGS titles were primarily developed for the Playstation. And that says alot, It means that Kojima favors the Playstation more and thus develops the best version on it (Twin Snakes and Substance were the only canonical games to be released on other platforms and they were remakes/updates. Not counting MPO on PSP).

I know many people say that Substance was released on the Xbox and therefore MGS4 will too. But if that is so then why didn't Subsistence go to the Xbox. The fact that Substance was made better on the PS2 than on the Xbox says alot about Kojima's favour for the Playstation brand. One small thing, if you look at the trailer of MGS4 in the second disc of Subsistence, you see Otacon explaining to Snake what the Cell is and how it will win the console war. Now that go to be a big wink to the PS3 from Kojima.

I think this is a "closed circle" - gamers are waiting for developers to make some good (or exclusive) games for PS3, and then they'll have a reason to buy a PS3. But, on the other side we also have developers waiting for a PS3 to grow a bigger fanbase (or userbase) to justify creation of exclusive games for PS3... Conclusion:

There are some games that probably are put on table @ Sony headquarters, asking how much money they think its worth to have it exclusive. Like MS paid Rockstar 50 mln. dollar for the 2 episodic content packages for GTA IV, or probably put money on the table for some other complete games like Ace Combat 6, not even on this list.

Don't be so sure dude... MGS2 was on XBOX 1. MGS has been on MSX, Nintendo, PS, XBOX... Konami and Square Enix are commercial companies, 3rd party with shareholders that want one thing... MONEY. Most profit. And they get that by selling as many copies of a game as possible. More chance on XBOX 360 then on PS3 for sure

GTA4 - not a PS3 exclusive, hell, not even a PS2 exclusive. Announced for both platforms at the same time.

Ace Combat 6 (@Ktchong) was not announced for PS3 exclusively, and is like Ninja Gaiden - since it was an Xbox1 exclusive, not a 360 exclusive.

Assassin's Creed - 360 exclusive lost to PS3 as an exclusive, then went multi. Look it up. X05 (360 exclusive as 'Project Assassin'), E3 06 - PS3 'exclusive' running on 360 hardware.

Anyway, MGS4 and FFXIII will eternally be exclusives, the devs have said it themselves, no amount of shi**y logic will help you overcome the facts:

White Engine = PS3 only.
Kojima = total control over Kojima Productions.
Konami = no say in the matter because of above.
Kojima = hates ports.
Kojima = says its exclusive.
Kojima = says it can only be done on PS3.
360 = Dead in Japan
FF = Hugely reliant on Japan (1/2+ of sales)
Putting it on 360 will
a) Put the game on around 20 discs (repeated data)
b) Downgrade the game
c) Cost SOOOOO much more than they could make as it would have to be built from the ground up again
Therefore, it doesn't even make financial sense. Ouch. Suck on that Xbots.

I guess you're all still jealous that you have zero (0) big third party exclusives). Nothing that will sell as well as FFXIII and MGS4. Hell, probably not even as well as Tekken 6 (also PS3 exclusive).

How can you play the games when your console keeps breaking. Yes you can bash PS3 for having no games now, come Fall, that'll be over. Same with price. 360 shows no indication of changing since MS won't even admit there's a problem outside of:

Poor online? Perhaps, but it's workable and free.
Poor online gaming? Nope, better than 360. Free, some dedicated servers, especially big titles = no lag.

And of course, Cell > Xenon by a good light year (hyperbole, don't get your knickers in a twist). Xenos >~ RSX - RSX is better at some things, Xenos at others, overall Xenos is slightly better, but of course Cell can do GPU tasks.

There are plenty of things that can be done on PS3 which can't be done on 360 - Kojima seems to know so, and obviously knows more than you. I know it's tough, but you gotta accept that.

I'm impressed how the majority of PS3 fans has nothing bad to say about X360 except "hahah...failure rate". Play games, not console (like someone said). X360 fans can also laugh at PS3 like "hahaha...no games, bad online, high price...". they care because unfortunately 98% of multiplatform games are developed on and look and play better on the 360. This isnt because the PS3 sucks, its just a different machine. There are countless comparisons of games that prove this. Only exclusive titles will ever push the PS3's potential which is why Sony needs to put up the cash to keep these games. We all want to see the power of the PS3 shine. I am curious and I am impressed with HS and look forward to seeing what comes out of E3.

I think once the PS3 sales pick up this holiday season you'll start to see more japanese exclusive because the 360 install base in japan sux. I'm not worry about the PS3, the game lineup this fall is the best and Killzone might just be the title that shows the true power of the PS3 and then we won't have stupid comparisons on multiplatform or that the PS3 doesn't have any games.

seems like anything ps3 related on wired.com comes up negative. when firmware update 1.8 came around i was so excited that the second i got it installed and could stream to my psp via internet i emailed them with this giant thing explaining it and its significance. i wasn't expecting them to do much with it but was hoping they'd at least note the huge update but nothing... think it may have had something to do with the Apple juice stuck in their throats...

These events actually happened and these games ended up on the 360. The only place that i really think a bias would have an effect is when the author starts talking about MGS4 coming out on Ps3... which i heavily doubt.

i agree, just wanted to vent a bit since i don't ever see anything positive for ps3 on wired.com. i think ps3 is really doing a lot correct and i'm just tired of not seeing the credit given. if things would just switch a bit more positive media wise they'd in turn get a lot more things done for us the consumers you know?

...and I believe this trend will continue with every new console generation. This generation there will be Sony exclusives that will become instant hits. These games will be system sellers. But around the time the PS4 and Xbox 3 are released we will all begin to hear how some of the games that were exclusives on the PS3 will be going multiplatform with the newer generation consoles. Who knows, maybe next generation Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank, Warhawk, or Drake's Fortune will go multiplatform. Only time will tell. But as in previous generation, despite the PS4 losing some previous gen exclusives there will still be enough PS4 exclusives to sell systems. Again, this is a trend that will continue for as long as there are multiple consoles to choose from. This trend will also hold true for Microsoft as well.

Playstation better keep their exclusives if they plan on making a comeback. MGS4 is an unlikely to be on both consoles. As for FF13, never gonna happen. Only time will tell.. E3 is on the way

Sony's games for the E3 look awesome, I know I will be buying at least £250 in games this fall.

Exclusives are being lost from both sides, that is why in house games need to shine, so that third party keep up with the quality. Companies that have never programmed for a Sony product are now starting to do so, PC and XBox went hand in hand with software due to the ease of porting the games. Now these companies are developing for the PS3 as well.

I hope that Sony catch up a bit over fall / winter, that many more games go multi-format and the companies start using the strengths of each console rather than doing a standard version.

I keep wanting to say MGS 4 will be a ps3 exclusive but I don't like the way Konami is not confirming it. They're giving very "dance around" answers which seems to be leaving the door open for it to make it jump on the 360. I was planning to get a ps3 for sure soon but if Killzone is a flop (I doubt it) and mgs 4 is announced for 360 then Im holding off on the purchase. Halo 3 is more than enough to tie me over till more titles come over.

It seems you need some Wii/DS shovelware 'Learn to read English' minigame before you can respond to my future posts.

The online service/experience, whatever you want to call it for PSN as I put it is arguably poor. The online gaming component, which I mention specifically is superior to LIVE. And that's why we're online with our consoles, no? To game. And isn't that the only feature Xbots are paying for? Such a shame.

FFXIII would be on 20, yes a hyperbole, closer to 15 maybe. The reason is, as I put in brackets, repeated data. They need to have the game world on each disc + dialogue + constants - basically everything but storyline + specific cinematics as this isn't really a level based game (based on other FFs). That probably wouldn't even be able to fit on a disc. Obviously you had no idea how that worked. Hope this helps.

By the way, for those still worried about MGS4:

And yes, obviously some things on PS3 can't be done on 360. They are nowhere near equals in power, just in current 3rd party utilization (1st party PS3 this Q3-Q4>all). YOU have no idea how software works, there are far more severe limitations on 360 and its CPU.

It's missing quite a few, Bladestorm and LA Noire pop to mind.

Sony is getting it's arse handed to them, their lackluster sales are dissapointing and each week they're selling alot less than the Wii and 360, though in Japan the PS3 is selling around 4K more units each week, which isn't all that great anyway.

While the Wii and 360 sell, I'd expect more PS3 games to jump ship, especially to the 360 because it can easily handle PS3 games.
