I think Nintendo and Sony did equally good jobs.
Nintendo successfully penetrated casual market and was a huge success with their DS and WII.
Sony successfully setting Blu-Ray as HD media standard with the help of PS3 which will bring them money not only on Games but in Movies as well.

Microsoft is just doing awful job. XBOX resell to them same old market and fail to impress anybody outside US, despite the money they put in, it's a big sinkhole. Vista doesn't do well. Zune can't beat IPod, Silverlight can't touch Adobe Flash, Live.com can't match google. PLUS The anti-trust in EU(those who said just a browser eh, tell that to Netscape), Microsoft is going to have a horrible time ahead.

I don't think that MS forced Sony to come out with the ps3 like a lot of people speculated, because with the ps2 alone, even now, the ps2's install base surpasses that of the GameCube, the Wii, the Xbox, the 360 and the ps3 combined. so in truth, Sony could've waited a little longer in order to introduce the ps3 at a lower price point.

but I think HD DVD is what ultimately pushed sony to come out with the ps3. because the playstation brand's success is a simple formula; newest media storage, (cd, DVD, blu ray), new franchises, and longuest support of consoles. so I think that sony saw the ps3 as paramount for the infiltration of blu ray and also for the ps3 to repeat the success of its predecessors.

I don't think that sony is truly worried about the Wii or the 360, because in Sony's mind, it doesn't matter how many units the Wii or the 360 sells, because for the previous generations, Sony's success wasn't based on the existing market, but rather in their ability to create and dominate an entire new market.

in other words, if in the ps2's gen, there were ã total of 250 million gamers, then this gen sony is banking on the further expansion of that number, and hoping to create between 50 to 100 million more gamers.

2008 is the only year since I can remember that I haven't bought ANY Nintendo games. (Brawl I can appreciate, but it isn't my thing)

2007 had some cool Wii games. Galaxy, Metroid 3, Paper Mario.

The way I see it is:

Every single year is the year for Nintendo. Note Nintendo not the Nintendo gamer.

For the gamer last year was a toss up between the 360 and the PS3. Both had more of my kind of titles than I could actually buy.

So 2008 was the year of 360 and PS3 gamers, but for the companies it was Nintendo's year.

I bet Nintendo were swigging down the champagne again this New Years.

By who? Not the critics. Not IGN (the most credible review site) It's the lowest scoring Mario Kart on metacritic. And I doubt it would be considered the best by anyone who played the original on SNES. Original and still the best I might add. (And it also had no blue shells!)

I still remember ps3 fanboys saying it was stupid to have different versions of the 360 when it first came out.When sony did the same thing with the ps3 the same people said it's a good thing because people have a choice of what system to buy.The same with rumble.When sony didn't put it in their controllers when it first came out they said they didn't like rumble and was glad it wasn't in the controller.When sony finally put it in the ps3 controllers the same ps3 fanboys said they were glad sony put it in becaused they missed it.Sony even lied about the reason they didn't put rumble in at first.Sony claimed that the controller didn't have enough room to put rumble and moition in it.The real reason was because sony along with microsoft was sued for useing rumble without permission.They both lost the case and had to pay millions to the company and so much to use it again.before microsoft came out with the 360 they already paid the fine and made an agreement with the company to use it.Sony on the other hand never paid the fine or try to make an agreement to use it again before the ps3 was releases so they couldn't use it.

ps3 fanboys are always saying that everyone coppies sony.They claim that sony is the only one that comes up with new ideals and the only one that comes out with their on exclusives like MGS so they don't have to steal them like microsoft does.The fact is that they are 100% wrong.Sony coppied

Some ps3 fanboys claim that Sony was planing on useing moition before nintendo was.If that is true then why was the first ps3 that sony showed and played for the people never had moition in it and when they gave the specs and what will be in the box they never mentioned moition.But when the wii was selling a lot because people liked the moition controller then sony changed their controllers to moition controllers.

Years ago when microsoft came out with the first xbox, microsoft said that they wanted to make it more then a video game system they wanted to make it a media center.Sony then said that people wanted a game system not a media center and it wont work.Well here we are years later and sony ps is now a media center instead of just a game system.I guess it's alright because it's sony.if microsoft would have done this we would still be hearing about how microsoft stole it from sony.

It's interresting how none of the delusional fanboys complain about the Wii. I see Wii as a direct threat to hardcore gamers, primarily because they introduced gimmicky mini-party games, rehashed sequels, crappy (or should I say non-existent) online service, low-end hardware for sake of profit and load of crapware that sells.

This is a model that both MS and Sony will follow the next generation unless they drag this one out seeing how Wii is selling so well on low-end hardware. The promise of DVD playback (in Japan at least) is not going to materialize it seems.

Sony has just about as much 3rd party support as Microsoft. Microsoft has Gears of War which is a third party exclusive but then Sony has Metal Gear Solid 4. True you guys have Halo which is a third party exlcusive with maybe one or two more but it is about equal. Sony builds stuidios to produce brand new IPs which take time to develop and grow sales but once the name is out there, they will truly begin to benefit from it.

A Halo expansion, and unconfirmed racer, an unheard of racer, a game that's on the verge of vaporware (I remember being excited for Alan Wake in 2007), a JRPG i've never heard of and don't care about...simply because I don't like jrpg's, and splinter cell..a game that ceased being fresh back in 2004.

I'm sorry, maybe I'm living too much in the past but I remember a time when I was excited to be a 360 owner, when the system seemed to hold so much promise and I just pine for those days again. I can't help but feel like I've been ripped off after having spent over $900 on my 360, add-on's, xbl, wifi, warranty...etc and not having any games I want to play on it, not to mention what a headache the hardware has been. It never used to be this way.

I submit that with a global recession, Sony will do three things in 2009.

1. Kill off 25-35 percent of their first party development houses.

2. Start charging for PSN.

3. Start making multi platform games for 360 and Wii.

It's not about brand loyalty, it's about viability.

So Sony can continue loosing money and your response to that is Home? Maybe you haven't heard this but there's this global recession, which is causing many companies to CUT their advertising budgets. Especially on highly non-proven mediums like Sony Home. Yeah the advertisers will come running.

If Sony's losses continue, they will have no choice but to do at least one if not two of my suggestions (maybe more and I'm not in any way stating discontinuing PS3.) If you don't think they've not at least thought about some of the things I've proposed, your more delusional than I thought your were. You seem to forget Sony's promise of FULL BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY on all PS3's sold. So what did they do? They lost money and in an effort to cut cost they removed the hardware completely, then they supported a software emulator for backwards compatibility then completely dropped backwards compatibility on PS3 altogether. They dropped it because it cost too much. I'm not saying this makes Sony a bad company, just one more interested in making a profit. If their first party studios are not making a profit you will see some consolidation. I wouldn't be surprised if it’s happened already in some of the 8000 employees cut number that Sony has already announced.

On last point. You might be a fanboy who could never imagine God of War on the Wii or 360, but Sony stockholders could care less if that brought in 100 million in profit. Think about it.

Sony Computer Entertainment has been the brightest spot on Sony Corporation's overall empire for nearly 20 years...Sony, since day 1, has invested long term plans for the group...and executed it nearly perfectly...

the early PS3 time frame may be the darkest time they have faced thus far...but it doesn't change the fact that there is still monumental profit potential with this product line than any other division of Sony...

if anything..my predicition is simple...Sony needs to look at the gaming industry...see that it still grew in 2008 over 2007, despite a massive recession occuring...and become more focused on what they need to accomplish...competition is tighter than ever...their brand name isn't pulling the unanimous weight that it used to...

There’s a reason Activision, EA, and Rock Star to name a few produce multi-platform games. The production value per game is just too dam high, end of story. I have and answer to that. It's probably because the PS2 is still actively sold, developed for and is currently still the most played console in the world. PS2 games routinely break into the top 10 in worldwide sales and Sony is actively pushing the PS2 into new markets yet, with a new model no less.

The reason why people still bring the PS2 up is because it's still relevant. People talk about Sony having lost marketshare - I certainly don't see how. So, do you so how much of a fanboy you look like when you compare Sega Hardware to the PS2? Sega doesn't make hardware anymore, the Gamecube is done, the orig Xbox is done. The PS2 is still a force in the business. This holiday season alone some 2 million people worldwide woke up Christmas morning to find a brand new PS2 under their tree. Look at the release schedule for the PS2 for 2009. The PS2 has just as many games coming up this year as the 360 does.

PS2 is last gen though, no way around that, no matter how well it sells. So that would put Sony in 2nd, wouldn't it? Nintendo (1 zillion or something like that), Sony (64 mil), and Microsoft (28 mil).

It's kind of unfair, sure, but Sony is still selling PSPs too (not PSP2's, that's a whole other story). They don't get all their money from the PS3. And the PS2 is helping them out too. The big problem ... is that Sony should do games for other platforms as well. They receive most money from selling software, and if they expand the platforms for their games, they will receive more money.

Look at Microsoft ... release the games on the X360 then a year later they release on the PC. More sales mean more money. Personally I think it’s good business. Just look at Gears 2 and Fable 2, sooner or later they are going to be ported to PC, but it sold a buck load for the X360 and they sell some more in the PC.

Sony should do the same thing. They are already doing it with LocoRoco (coming to mobile).

I would rather see Sony concintrate on developing the best games they can for only one platform. Developing games with the PC in mind would take away resources and and possibly compromise the overall experience for trying to placate a games design,form,function or mechanics to suite another platform. I wouldn't say microsoft isn't working hard on increasing the quality of it's services through xbl, xbla, xbl community games, and other additions to xbl; I consider XBL community games and things like kodu more helpful to gaming as a whole, because these are the devices that are going to give us the great gaming studios of tomorrow (kodu specifically will help computer science as a whole).

You already talked about sony, so I won't, but their focus is much more on 1st party games and big budget exclusives.

There is also something to be said for the fact that M$ has the benefit of having a bigger install base with a system that's easier to develop for. It doesn't need to pour money in to first party studios to develop new tech for its system because it's already being built outside M$ at places like iD and Epic with little cost to M$.

I swear, I used to think Digg was bad for fanboys, but this site is just full of them. I have never seen so many Sony fanboys in my life. It's like all the Sony fanboys refuse to give MS any credit for shipping nearly 30 million consoles and for having a GREAT lineup of games and for have THE BEST online service. I personally own all three consoles and I ove each one for its own reason. The PS3 has a few great games like MGS4 and LBP, but the biggest reason I use it is for its Blu-Ray capabilities. I love the Wii for its first party games..... you just can't get better platforming than Mario and you can't get a better classic RPG than Zelda. These games plus the virtual console is reason enough for me to enjoy the Wii.

And the 360 has an incredible game lineup, with both first and third party support. I have Gears of War, Gears of War 2, call of Duty 4, call of Duty World at War, fallout 3, fable 2, GTA IV, Mass Effect, and Bioshock, all of which received tremendous reviews, and all of which are great on the 360. Four of these games I just listed are only available on the 360, and two of the others received better scores on the 360 than they did on the PS3 (Bioshock, fallout 3). It really is a joke how any of you PS3 fanboys can say the 360 is failing and is behind the PS3..... especially when you consider the 360 sold more consoles in 2008 than Sony, and also has the highest attach rate of any of the 3 current gen consoles. I swear Sony must have employees coming to this site leaving comments..... it is ridiculous how rabid the PS3 fanboys are here. Here's some advise...... enjoy the console you own and quit crying about the other consoles, you aren't going to get any kind of pay for doing it.

As for your statements, the reason why MS doesn't get credit for shipping 30 million consoles is A) They haven't and B) Because the hardware issues were terrible, and is probably why the 360 has been selling so slow in the first place. Think about it, in it's first 2 years the 360 sold only 13 million consoles vs the PS3's 17 million. It's obvious the PS3 is catching on faster...why do you think that is? Could it be hardware issues that you so obviously have turned a blind eye to?

Yes the 360 has a great lineup of games but as a 360 owner myself...I'm not playing games from 2 years ago. I played those games, I want something new and the 360 has been a letdown for me for over a year now - hardware issues aside. Personally, I also don't think XBL is that special. Having used both systems I'd rather give up cross game chat, save my money and not have to deal with legions of racist, homophobic 12 years olds. That's just me though. It's a matter of opinion.

As far as your list of games, yeah, looking at metacritic 2 of them received 2 more points on the 360, one of them was better on the PS3 and one was the same. You know what that tells me? That they were all pretty much identical.

Every time I post something on here, you are the first one to come crying about it. Let's get the facts straight from my post. 1) I said MS has shipped NEARLY 30 million consoles, i didn't say they have shipped 30 million consoles. 2) Almost every comment on this article is someone saying MS is failing and that Sony is shipping more consoles than MS currently (which is false, maybe you should look at total sales for 2008). 3) the article rants about MS throwing money at studios to give MS exclusivity to games, and says MS is doing nothing to correct the 3 red lights of death or the E74 error code. Sony goes the route of fixing a few things several times a year where as MS fixes a lot of things a couple times a year. MS past update VASTLY improved several aspects of Live (party chat, Netflix, revamped dash) that every consumer could find a use for. The PSN updates I receive don't always do things that I necessarily notice. And Home is a joke...... after all the hype, it has turned out to be quite lame and boring.

You've certainly got your fanboy googles on today. How is doing an update once a year (there was over a year between the NXE and the last dashboard update) better then frequent updates that come out as they're ready? And vastly improved? That's just a matter of opinion. Quite frankly I hate the new dashboard, I much preferred the blades, no one but the US has the Netflix service and party chat is just a slight tweak to the cross game chat feature - which personally I didn't use once in years of XBL on the Xbox and 360.

As for Home...it's still in beta testing and still from what I've seen it's always packed. Obviously people don't share your views. I've seen advances and changes on my PS3, I use Life with Playstation, the web browser, Divx player, Dolby True HD, upscaling, a video store with actual content. These are all excellent features added on. I couldn't name you one update that MS released that I found useful.

Fact of the matter is, is that Sony is relying on their established IP's as well as putting new ones out there, which i believe is smart on their part.

It seems ridiculous to put all your investments into micro-transactions when they are already available on each console. This is what is defining each console.

Truly Microsoft should have kept some first parties to help define their system and keep the competition healthy in terms of innovative games being released.

I do believe that Sony is working the hardest and doing the best job. Too bad the mainstream seems to prefer crap over quality.

Just for the fact that they have the psp ps2 ps3 blue ray all to worry about but I feel they could do certain things better. As for who did the best in the previous years.....

Nintendo SALES wise tops everyone no ifs ands buts about it.. BUT I also feel they are not even in the same competition with MS or Sony so I throw them out the window.

MS I feel is stuck in the middle does half decent sales wise games majority suck besides the 1 game they get a year that everyone buys.

Sony I feel due to initial price they lose sales and their bad marketing doesn't help but they really never had good marketing to begin with. Sony I feel has best games way more diverse regardless of how well they sell as a gamer front they deliver.

As a gamer I say Sony won 2008 hands down which is all i care about as a gamer.

you know something.. i didnt read this article... but im sick of fanboys one way or another... people who constantly back sony and bash micrsoft ... its rediculous... And ill telll you why.

Sony is Microsoft. They are hurting... they are hurting because they are trying something new. The cell processor is difficult to program for because not many know how to. Its something new and something more difficult to use. If you remember... microsoft did the same thing. Its called windows vista. Reason it was hurting.. main reason... was cause the first years.. none of the old xp drivers worked... and no companies like creative for sound cards... made vista drivers... for an entire year... So people complained things didnt work...

vista had its benefits however.. just like ps3... Vista had dx10.. which only 1 game truely took advantage of.. and thats crysis. PS3 had the cell... which be honest with u only 1 game is taking advantage of (i think) which is killzone. Crysis is the technological pinical of the gaming industry... but it didnt sell well sadly... poor install base.. for computers that could run it the way it was meant to be played... kinda the same thing for killzone... wether u want to beleive it or not ... having a game on one console witch has the fewest install base... is gonna hurt its sales...

my point is the company that tries new stuff... as much as we all say we love new stuff... is the one that takes the initial hit. Windows 7 is the one that will make loads of cash for microsoft... and to be honest its just a faster vista... reason 7 wont hurt them is cause the drivers are ready... its not something new to code for. Microsoft could afford a loss from a crappy os... cause people will still buy the crappy os... sony on the other hand... well i hope they make a 4th console. Maybe next time they will be more excepted because the knowledge will be out there to work with the hardware...(provided they dont add more crazy random junk that isnt needed.) Now im not some sony fanboy... i actually prefer the 360 big time over the sony ps3.. i own both but i can honestly say i can care less for my ps3... i just got that crap for metal gear.

Final point is that they are both corporations... and u cant accuse one or the other of lack of innovation. They try.. innovation hurts.
