Take-Two Reports PS3 Biggest Revenue Generator

Kotaku writes: Sales were up at Take-Two Interactive, thanks to sales of games like Grand Theft Auto IV and Midnight Club: Los Angeles, but the publisher saw losses also increase to the tune of $15 million.

The company pointed to two other titles, NBA 2K9 and Carnival Games as leaders for the quarter, laying out its fiscal 2009 game plan. That includes two batches of Grand Theft Auto IV downloadable episodes due by October 31, 2009, one of which has already been announced and dated. The company boasted that more than 3 million games in the Carnival Games series have been shipped.

Take-Two list the PlayStation 3 as its biggest revenue generator on the publishing side, with 35% of the quarterly take. That beats out the Xbox 360, which brought in 28% of its publishing dollars, and the Wii, at 11%.

For the entire fiscal year, Take-Two brought in $1.5375 billion in revenue, with $97.1 million in net revenue. That's much better than the company's 2007, when it raked in $981.8 million, resulting in a loss of over $138 million.

alster235605d ago

well i guess T2 joins the likes of EA, Ubisoft, Konami, and Namco Bandai. i was kinda suprised when i saw ,ore gta4s on 360 then ps3.

- Ghost of Sparta -5605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

EA and Ubisoft have also reported that they're making more money from the PS3 but how? Microsoft lying about their total hardware sales again, I guess. That or every refurbished Xbox 360 that goes out whenever they need to repair the RROD counts as sold to retailers (or consumers).

Nathan Drake5605d ago

They've always been reporting the shipped number of consoles, that's why the actual difference between Ps3 and 360 software numbers in the US has been shrinking and shrinking even with Microsoft reporting more hardware "sales"

sonarus5605d ago

Just a question. What does hardware sales have to do with software sales?

dktxx25605d ago

More hardware - more people to buy games

- Ghost of Sparta -5605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

More people own 360's = More software will be purchased for that platform. Or so I thought until EA and Ubisoft reported otherwise.

jaysquared5605d ago

This is a very confusing... the 360 has more user base and according to NPD sells the most games.. So kinda weird that developers are making more money on the PS3 than on the 360.

faisdotal5605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

Well of course 360's sell more, Christmas is coming and central heating prices are going up.

*just for the lulz*

- Ghost of Sparta -5605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

"... the 360 has more user base and according to NPD sells the most games.."

NPD only covers American hardware / software sales. Maybe when you stop believing that America is the only country in the world this will all become easier for you to understand.

faisdotal5605d ago

How about Red Dead Revolver 2 exclusive to PS3.

faisdotal5605d ago

To be honest, 360 owners only care about Gears Of War and Halo, it's why they have one.

Ridrick5605d ago

Thats why developers earning money on PS3.

caladbolg7775605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

Sweeping generalizations aside, that's almost true.

faisdotal5605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

It is true, the demand is so clear when both of these games sell at seriously high amount's within the first week. It's what most 360 owners really want.

/Speaking the obvious.

Kaneda5605d ago

360 sold is misleading.

a gamer - bought system twice (becoz RROD) - still 1 gamer for developer. But M$ counts as new gamer. 3 years warranty is up. So from now on 360 sold will be misleading to developer.

DaKid5605d ago

Am i the only one that noticed this is for one quarter, a quarter when they had no major releases. And on top of this people are so worried about what system made the largest revenue that we all miss they lost money for the quarter?

Danja5605d ago

Can someone tell these developers that the PS3 is a sinking ship...they need to jump out..XD *sarcasm*

I really hope SE is taking note of this trend , PS3 owners dont guy games...meh...I wanna see another Bot say that..lol

LeonSKennedy4Life5605d ago

That was hilarious...

Bubbles, my friend.

jtucker785605d ago

Maybe it's because M'soft take a bigger revenue cut.

John Carmack said they weren't going to ship rage on 3 DVDs because M'soft would take too much of their money.

Maybe devs don't have to sell as many copies of their games on PS3 to make their money back.

Just a suggestion ... I may well be completely wrong. :S

konrad5605d ago

The hardware is so good that I have to buy second xbox360, when first is in service I have to play.
Thanks God I don't have to buy two times the same game

SL1M DADDY5605d ago

When they know they can make money with it and sell games they know to make more of them for the system. What's more important is that the PS3 has a smaller install base and yet brings in more money for big companies like this. Kudos Sony for making a platform like the PS3 that is appealing to those interested in making money and great games.

Genesis55605d ago

I still can't figure out with that 8:1 attach rate the 360 has, what publishers games they are attaching to. MS must be embellishing their sales figures. This is why they don't publish hard sales figures like Sony does.

BrotherSic5605d ago

For the the period of November 1, 2007 to October 31, 2008:

360: 39%
PS3: 34%
Wii: 9%
PS2: 8%
PSP: 5%
PC: 3%
DS/GBA: 2%

Thanks to Gaf

navyguy215605d ago

Bioshock was released for PS3 this quarter, that explains the jump.

Genesis55605d ago (Edited 5605d ago )

Well it's nice to see an article where the PS3 is being bashed for a change. Last week 8 out of 10 articles were a doom and gloom article about Sony.

KnowitAll5605d ago

Jtucker is right thou.

To put things simple. The Game companies (Sony, Nintendo) charge a fee to other companies for every game sold on their consoles.

Sony charges the cheapest fee, lets say 3-4$ from every game sold. While Microsoft and Nintendo (Definately Nintendo) charge around 8-10$ (This are just estimates don't respond)

Sony's always had the cheapest fee and ironcally makes its losses from this

UltimateIdiot9115605d ago

I thought I was the only one. I could never figure out how they do those calculation. Those attachment rate does not seem to reflect in these reportings on revenue at all.
Or maybe is because 360 games drop in price a lot quicker than PS3?
Whatever the reason may be, those attachment rating are bs. It proves nothing in the end.

prowiew5605d ago

Probably something to do with the used games market.

baum5605d ago

The reason PS3 is making more revenue for 360 is because PS3 game sales in Europe beat 360 game sales. That "million" lead is not in all europe, it's basically just UK. Since the dollar is very weak against the Euro and GBP in comparison, a game sale in Europe is much better than a game sale in America.

So much for America being "the most important territory in the console war", lol. Tables are turning and the only thing Xbox fanboys can do is spread FUD and negative articles surrounding Sony and PS3, but if that didn't help the Dreamcast against PS2, it'll barely help the 360 against PS3, if it does.

tordavis5604d ago

"More hardware - more people to buy games "

Tell that to Nintendo 3rd parties.

blackpanther255604d ago (Edited 5604d ago )

yeah tell them to make better games as well (DBZ for the wii sux)
:)

Edit: Below

Yeah a game is 60 bucks here. the last time i went to UK i thought everything was a reasonable price until i change my currency to pounds. Damn it is a big difference. I found it funny that it is the same price tag but with a different curry symbol on it. Lol i was kinda pissed when my aunt gave me 100 pounds to spend lol i had no clue it was 200 dollars lol

Sprudling5604d ago (Edited 5604d ago )

A sale in Europe is worth more than a sale in the US. With the current exchange rate the typical price for a new game is about 90$ here (Norway) now. Don't know what games cost in the US, but I imagine it's alot less than that.

twoface5604d ago

i'm sure you know that 360 and ps3 games are in equal (quality) comparison whereas most of wii games are minigames. Compare apples to apples

hitthegspot5604d ago

Yesterday.. I kept hearing "kotaku hates the PS3", "kotaku never posts any positive news about the PS3", "kotaku", "kotaku", "kotaku"...

Well there you have it kotaku posted some positive news about the PS3 software sales. However we are now in Q4 and so far for the year the 360 is still selling more software from Take 2. 39% more as of October 31St. It will be great to see how the year turns out.

xwabbit5604d ago

Well there are a lot of xbox users who have over 2 xbox's in there possession lol. My friend has 4 xbox's, the smart one keeps buying another when one dies. So a lot of the same people buy more than 1 xbox cus their first one breaks.

na2ru15604d ago

still with a big smile :D

40cal5604d ago

All of these publishers reporting higher revenue earned on the PS3 can only be good for future 3rd party support/ exclusives.

IdleLeeSiuLung5604d ago

This is one of them 360 fanboy articles from the 360 fanboys at Kotaku again /sarcasm.

Playstation 3 is healthier than ever and 2008 is indeed the year of PS3. PS3 owners are buying more software across all publishers, 360 owners are not buying enough games period. The RROD is affecting 360 gamers purchases after all and it seems it's why this vicious Sony attack is occuring: to cover it up.

eagle215605d ago

360 owners buy more of the same games, probably exclusive to their console. You can't spin these facts reported by Take-Two. I guess Ubisoft will be next.

Narutone665605d ago

Xbox 360 games are so easily pirated. Just look at the torrent sites.

UltimateIdiot9115605d ago

Ubisoft already reported earning the most from PS3.

Megatron085604d ago

And of course your point is completely wrong konami released a single game on the 360 its no surprised that they made more on the ps3. Especially given that mgs4 is only on the ps3. Take-Two also released more games on the ps3 this year. Last year they released more on the 360 and big surprise last year they made more on the 360. As for EA they release trash so I guess that just means ps3 owners have poor taste in games

twoface5604d ago

but why did this publishers publish more games on ps3?

JHUX5604d ago

EA publised Deadspace I believe, which was from from trash. Although there sports games are trash.

....that picture doesnt make sense.

That leg is just in a weird position.

Ariexv5605d ago

wow you guys are retarded, the EA numbers were fake, 360 made EA more money then Ps3 + psp + ps2 + Wii combined. As for take two numbers it's because Bioshock Ps3 just came out.

rucky5605d ago

Link for the EA comment?

/sarcasm

Ariexv5605d ago

Bioshock(ps3) if you look @ the year-long revenues 360 wins easily.

Xlll5605d ago

@Ari thats a lame excuse and a poor attempt to spin this story.

ultimolu5605d ago

Stop breakdancing on the news.
It is what it is.

GiantEnemyCrab5605d ago

Yeah Ariex stop telling the truth and putting things in perspective.

This is for the current quarter and the PS3 had Bioshock which is why they earned more. Simple stuff.

Remembering Medal Of Honor: The Forgotten Master Of WW2 Games

Ibrahim from eXputer: "The Medal of Honor franchise was once the crown jewel of FPS war games, later defeated by the tides of time and poor development."

They tried to turn it into Call of Duty and it killed it off. They should reboot it and go back to it's roots. But they'd ruin it with online-only/multiplayer style bullshit so why bother? I have very fond memories of these games, but this series can stay dead as far as I'm concerned.

I have fond memories of playing the Medal of Honor Breakthrough MP Demo. It had two maps and custom servers. Living on campus, I had it downloaded on one of the PC Lab servers so I could access it on any computer at the university. Joined a clan and made friends that I still keep in touch with today.
