HDCP Required For Xbox 360 HD Netflix Streaming

@ plain rice: Not to sure but it can upscale your DVD's to 1080p I beleive and allow you to watch HD DVD's at 1080p compared to component that only gave you 480p and 1080i respectively.

HDCP is only compliant with digital signals. Analogs will not work or will be shown as 480p.

HDMI/DVI = Digital (works)
VGA/RGB/Component = Anolog (doesnt work)

Streams are in SD and HD to accommodate the majority of the market, 1080p is a small minority. MS/NF is smart to offer content that every set in every country can view, after all most people can't afford 2k to 5k TV's during a global economic crisis.

you are almost correct in saying only dvi/hdmi are hdcp.

HDCP does not have (almost) anything to do with DVI vs DVI-D. It's an add-on to DVI (and a requirement for HDMI).

I don't see the problem. I recently traded in my Opus 360 for a newer arcade model for the HDMI slot and the more reliable motherboard, Falcon or the newer one, it cost me about $79 but I got 5 arcade games, Gears of War and a controller bundled with it. It's a wonder how my Opus 360 survived for so long...

It is required you have an HDCP Display, if your TV is not HDCP compliant your TV will be unable to recieve the digital HD signal.
It's more about the monitors guys, although the HDMI or DVI will be required as well.
Picking up a cable, not so expensive, a new TV set...priceless, err i mean, pricey.

Lot's of 360 owners don't have HDMI on our Xbox 360s even though our TVs do. Microsoft screwed up, this is like selling luxury cars without an audiocassette player instead of DVD audio with MP3 player.

Ok I'm confused with what I tend to see on this website. My 360 is the old version with component only. I play my games and watch HD movies that I download in 1080i without issue. Also some TVs are capable of providing 1080p through the component cables...when I researched there were only a few. I have a 1080p TV and I wish I could afford to get a new 360 however I see nothing in this article that would make me believe that I would not be able to watch a movie from Netflix in an HD format up to 1080i. The main point of the article is for people who have a box between their 360 and TV, Netflix wants a direct connection so there can be no recording. The author seemed to just throw in the statement about 480p on component, and obviously has no idea what he's talking about when it comes to that...it's not the same as watching a DVD in the DVD drive.

Isn't actually HD quality. It's halfway in between HD and SD, but upscaled. Also, XBL Marketplace content is already certified in order to be there, which is why the selection isn't as good as it should be.

Netflix is giving 360 owners access to pretty much every movie on the market, but with the consent of the major studios, and without HDCP compliance they will obviously refuse to send such high quality videos to users.

DRM/Copy Protection in any form is just plain WRONG especially when it dictates what hardware you need to listen to music or watch a movie. The fact that early adopters of the XBox 360 catch it in the ass sucks. Not only that but even if you have a new Jasper based unit and are not using the HDMI output to a display you're screwed too it seems. When will companies learn that DRM of any kind is just a waste and a hinderance?

Xbox 360 will stream HD Netflix content just fine over Component so Core owners are not getting screwed.

Because one of the 360's biggest new features is only going to be available to half its userbase, the ones who have 360 consoles with the HDMI port. Add on top of that, only those who have HDMI input on their HDTVs.

I'm sure it'll still work with Component, VGA, and Composite, but will be scaled down to 480p due to HDCP Noncompliance.

But almost every game supports 1080i, so it's not that big of a deal.

This incident affects roughly 50~60% of all 360 owners, thus making it a Big problem.

*Edit: The reason 1080i is supported is because a lot of people prefer it over 720p (such as myself). It’s a higher resolution, and some don’t mind the fact that it’s interlaced, especially if their HDTV has a good de-interlacing chip. Again, it’s all about choice. And it doesn’t hurt that the 1080i-only owners benefit as well.

Netflix give people the option to pick the download they want...

if I know my TV do not support a certain res because A) is not HD or B) my connection configuration... why would I download it at that res?

I think what bladestar is saying that its not so much the hating the haters but educating the "mis-informed". PS3 only owners are still set in their mandatory mind set - they still have yet to grasp that the 360 allows options - in the case of watching videos - you have the option of SD or HD...thus the same will apply to NETFLIX - you have the option of SD or HD to view your movies in...Its not really MS's fault - it would be the fault of the person who doesn't have a compatible tv to watch HD movies. When i had my Pro console hooked up with component cables - i could still watch the movies in HD format as my TV is 1080p - no issues and no windows...

There really is no issue here unless you want to find somthing then you should be looking at the person who DL the HD movie on a SD TV...

this is just a marketing tool for Microsoft. I already have xbox live AND netflix. I will usually just get the disc in the mail if I wanna see a movie. I get three at a time, and that's always more than I have time to watch each weekend, or even through the week. However, it would have been nice to watch some movies in 'semi HD' that the xbox 360 would've provided for movies that aren't yet out on hd dvd or bluray.
Yeah, my 360 is a launch one, so I guess I'll see how this pans out. Either way, it might still sway some people to become new xbox customers, and I think that's the goal. I certainly won't feel like I'm missing anything. I feel I have gotten good value for my 400 dollar console in the past 3 years.

When hd movies are viewed, do they require hdcp connection? My tv does 1080i over component as well as dvi. My ps3 is connected via hdmi-dvi and I use component for the 360. This wouldnt really affect me as I dont mind watching std dvd quality movies from netflix (it is what I get anyway). I have the hddvd add-on and I think the hddvd movies are running at 1080i. I know dvd's run at 480p because I am not using VGA.
