PS3 Firmware 2.43 Enables GT5 Advanced Downloading

I just downloaded the optional firmware 2.43 and the system actually seems more resposive. Anyway, I booted up Gran Turismo 5 and was browsing around the options when I noticed something interesting: When you uncheck the "Disable Advanced Downloading" it asks you to "accept" or "decline"

In the past you used to get a warning message saying this feature would be enabled in a future firmware update. Well this message no longer pops up. I guess now we know what the firmware update did, possibly among other things.

BTW, the advanced downloading system allows for peer-to-peer content uploading for faster downloads of GT-TV purchases, much like the MGO Beta P2P download option.

Thats a plus,I suppose.I recommend Polyphony get started on Gran Turismo 5 because I dont see the Prologue disc getting more interesting anytime soon.

Probably by this time next year we'll be all about the full game.

They shouldn't be that far from its release by now. Though the way the Prologue has become a hit, I would figure maybe they might try to milk the sales of that a bit more before releasing the full game (wouldn't blame them if they did).

I dont know man.I got GT3 on 2001 which came out after the PS2 in 1 year.Waiting 4 years for the true Real Racing Simulator requires too much patience.

But the full game will be just like the prologue. We've already seen prologue's graphics, that's what it will be. We've already seen prologue's 16 player races, that's what it'll be. I even think that the online system they use for GT5 will be the same. It seems to me they have no intention of creating a server lobby and the ability to create your own games. Nor does it seem they will have dedicated servers.

The physics engine in prologue, whilst accurate whilst driving round the track as you're supposed to, is severely flawed. It's not just the lack of damage; the cars aren't able to flip over or even rotate significantly in that direction at all, you'd never have 2 side wheels completely off the ground for example. Now this doesn't matter in the game because we're not driving like lunatics, but if you crash, you need more than just damage. And I don't see why running into a tape held up by poles will stop your car dead. It's seriously last-gen.

I hope the AI can be improved for the full release, it still uses the same "formula", so whilst it might be very intelligent, it doesn't seem that way. For instance, a professional racer might not want to be agressive and instead stick to his line to get the best time and hopefully overtake later. But if the AI does this it looks a little odd as though they don't know you are there. So the AI doesn't need to be more intelligent, just more agressive towards the player.

GT5 has had this option since they released the GTTV update. You can download multiple shows at once.

Look at Motorstorm, and dream that the 360 could come close to that. Be happy with Pure, because it's likely the closest you'll get to Motorstorm outside of the PS3.

Damage WILL be added to GT5P with more cars vis a patch (It's being worked on right now) and will be on the GT5 disc which will be here soon, less than 1 year. The Physics Engines been worked on as well, don't forget what you've got is a WORK IN PROGRESS, I mean for god sake, don't judge a 18 month old build of a game to the final product, of caurse the engines the power the game will be 'flawed', their not finished yet.

Yeah but I can't help but feel that the damage will have to be only half done. The thing about running into a tape and stopping dead? They aren't going to go into all the tracks and allow you to crash through that tape, they will add damage so that when you crash headlong into a tape held up by poles the front of your car will appear smashed up. By hitting what is effectively an invisible wall. If I drive really fast down a straight, then instead of taking the corner nicely I swerve, my car will have 0 chance of flipping over. The best I can hope for is that I swerve off the track and hit the wall. The car will stop dead EXACTLY like it does at the moment, only the side of the car will appear damaged.

The damage, to me, based on the fact they are just "adding it into prologue", seems as though it will be cosmetic for when you hit a wall or tape. This may affect how the car handles afterwards, and might even cause you to leave the race if the damage is severe enough. But the actual mechanic of how the car hits into the wall will be unchanged. And at the moment it's not nearly realistic. Same goes for smashing into the back of someone.

@ Thor: You've got some valid concerns mate; when you hit the tape on the Edgar Nordwand track its like running into the moon.

However, I wouldn't be too worried about it. Kazunori Yamauchi said in this interview "...we can test a lot of features using Gran Turismo 5: Prologue".

Polyphony Digital do listen to feedback, and they are continually addressing concerns. I read in another interview as well that they are using GT5:P to try out some of the new features in order to perfect it for the full version. Yamauchi is known for being a perfectionist, after all. Thats probably why GT5 has no release date (yet).

Mind you, he does mention later in the same interview (when talking about damage being implemented) that "We're not really planning for a trial or test version, we're going at it full speed. We'll see what happens".
So we'll see what happens indeed... I have little doubt though, that the full GT5 will deliver, especially if Polyphony continue to support it after release like many of Sony's 1st party developers are doing with their games.

Remember Gran Turismo 4 Prologue, the graphics were tweaked quite a bit in the full version. I'm hoping they improve upon that, the physics and online race performance. I can't wait for GT5.

The funny thing is, when they introduce damage, if the damage screws up the handling of the cars how much do you want to bet that the majority of people won't use it? Imagine doing a 40 lap endurance race only to have a collision on the 38th lap and your currently in 1st place. Your steering goes then you find out there's no way you can even finish the lap in a decent position. Also, multiplayer on the beginner online races are crazy. Some people just crash into you on purpose like it was a bloody demolition derby which isn't the point of GT and that's WITH the collision detection that's meant to go off from time to time. God knows what will happen when damage comes into it. It's a bit better in the expert races where you'll meet some great drivers.

The GT series has never been forgiving in the later stages in the game and that was with just tire damage. I remember reading on forums a few years back that some people thought that the difficulty of GT4 should be made much easier as they gave up playing. Just wait until they get damage lol

People need to realise that when GT gets damage, it won't be like burnout where you can still go at the same speed regardless of what state you're in, it won't be like GRID which is still a bit arcadey and it probably won't be like Forza 2 where damage (with the exception of major crashes) is purely aesthetic. GT 5 has always claimed being the realistic racer so expect damage to be in the same vein. Yamauchi has said in an interview that if they do damage, it would have to be very realistic or they would be no point (probably why GT5 is gonna take ages)

If you want to see what a real driving simulator is like, go pick up GTR on the PC and see if you can handle it. That game is brilliant but it's definitely not for everyone, you really need to be able to drive properly to appreciate it or don't bother.

I'm all in favor for making GT more realistic, but some people should be careful what they wish for....

EDIT: As a side note, I don't think anyone should be sick with GT5P unless they have a decent surround sound set-up, a Driving Force Pro Wheel (or the legendary G25 wheel) AND have got the F12007 car! I got mine finally last week......that thing is a demon!!! Controlling it with the driving force actually hurts my arms lol.

The fact that everything about the GT series is 'all or nothing' means that if there is damage, it's going to be fully realistic and seriously f*ck up your vehicle. Accidents are fairly easy to avoid in single player if you're skilled, but in multiplayer?

just for this game. Personally, if ever they add the collision damage, they should also add the option to turn it off. I don't want to see my lovely cars all dented and damaged just because the AI or other players sucks at driving.

GT5:Prologue is HUGE improvement. Like someone said, there WILL be damage, Kazunori Yamauchi (father of the GT games) said before that they will do their best to get car companies to allow full body damage. i don't see why you need to flip over, if you get to that point in any game, you aren't playing it right. GT 5's AI is VASTLY improved also. Try playing it with the AI difficulty set to 100, then come back and tell me the AI sucks, and when you do, you'll be lying. The AI drafts off of you, becomes very aggressive, and is the best I have seen in any racing game.
