Noel Silvia implies 2.40 is very close.

In a post regarding PSP themes, a user named "Stunt" asked to be updated on some 2.40 info. Noel's response can be read right underneath Stunt's question.

Eric's working hard to get everything set for the launch of Firmware 2.40, including a video walkthrough.
I can't comment on when (as I don't know the exactly date!), but I'm just as excited as all of you for it.

In game music is rather absurd really when you think about it. It basically overlays everything. You get the games music, sound effects and your music all in one. It sounds stupid. the way Sony has it in their PSN games is the best way. It cuts out the original BGM and keeps the sound effects as if it were meant to be.

In game music is only applicable if the game has music slider adjust to turn it off completely. Motorstorm is in dire need of custom music, though. The music in this game is some of the worst I've ever heard. EVER!

Hasn't Sony already said that game developers need to add support in there games for in game music? Thought I heard that some where.

And has been there for almost a year now. But some developers are finally activating that function for their titles on the PS3, such as Burnout Paradise and Wipeout HD.

It's important to remember that 360 developers have no say over which operating system functions are activated while their game is running. PS3 devs do, and some choose to reduce the PS3's OS to just its very basic functions in order to give themselves more RAM. If you have the option to improve your game, it makes sense to do this. But developers are starting to realize that PS3 owners also want things that 360 owners have grown up with, i.e. cross-game chatting and custom soundtracks.

Listen, and don't fret at what I might say...

Sony did confirm 'In-game Communication' not so much as to say 'everything on the XMB'. Even though it may be a plus, music is NOT exactly what's needed. You can listen to music out of game so what will that change? I like in-game tracks as well, but PS3 games have already included that option, and this will grow thus making music on IG-XMB pointless for me. Overall, an improved message system and also the ability to talk in chats is KEY. Also, viewing the browser would really be ideal, too.

But from recent news I believe chat rooms and viewing movie files won't be a part of this Firmware for in-game.

i would say less then 1 month. Eric did say there will be in game xmb trophies and enhancements to. when you use in game xmb all your going to be able to use it for is to see your friends and message them if you cant have in game music or use any voice chat features. which voice chat to your friends over all games is what ps3 needs. with all these features XBL is dead and when home and the video store is realesed that is the iceing on the cake for PSN. o and also video uploader for youtube on all games that would be amazzing.

Call me old style, but somehow I really dont' care for in game XMB for some reason. I hope i can turn off the in game messaging, I dont' have alot of time to play, when I do sit down and play i don't want anyone to disturb me..let me just play for a hour or two before i get back to real life is all i care..

If i keep on seeing things like mesg or whatever request pouring into my game session, i may get piss off.

Trophy is a nice way to know how much time you have wasted in video game as well as oppose to doing something productive...

just like the 2 yrs i spend on FF11...it reads... "you have played for 115 days and 2 hours and 3 minutes"...

Dude when it comes to In game music thats up to the devs to do Star Dust HD has in game muisc in it u can make ur own custom sound tracks useing music from ur Hard drive.

hmm... if 2.4 includes in-game music i will be pleasantly surprised. I believe that sony will leave this aspect up to the developer to implement as different producers feel differently towards the importance of their own soundtracks and how they add to the feel/atmosphere during game play. I'm lovin Kojima's addition of the ipod into MGS4, brilliant... here's to a future update that will actually let me play songs from my hard drive.

...DOES imply that there is SOMETHING about to happen because they way you add music to that thing is a way that is not possible on the current FW, from what I've read. Konami has been wanting Sony to get at least trophy support out there, and I have to believe they really wanted Sony to go ahead with this FW for more than just trophies.

Along with Sony saying they would implement systemwide custom soundtracks this summer, I have to believe we'll see it in 2.4. I'd be really surprised if it's NOT in there.

if and when after this update do arrives and if its missing some key features like some are assuming, than simply do what most people do and beg for the missing features that way your whining and begging can get the psn features that will eventually make it the top alternative to xbox live.

i mean thats how upscaling and BD live and a bunch of other features got on there, it is because all your cries that sony even bothers with these things in the first place.

so to all you ps3 owners out there just keep demanding more, whether or not we get these features tomorrow or a year from now, the more we preach and nip pick about things than the more sony is set to react to our cries.

i think its going to be that you will see your trophies under the game menu, and the home integration is if you want to see in home in 3d.
Not to mention Home will not come out till 2009.

screw custom music, i know its a nice feature but i rather have true in game xmb so i can message, invite,join and have a real friends list and have in game chat for all games. these are the things that make LIVE what it is and thats what is needed for the ps3. I rather have the stuff that makes LIVE LIVE then simply having in game xmb just to say it has custom soundtracks but doesnt have game invites.

Im hoping that its a true in game xmb and not just the abiltiy to bring up the xmb in game , just to find out that while you can bring up the xmb its still missing features.

A Voice Message is much much better for the online network as a whole.

You record a 5-10sec voice message and send it to a user. The message doesn't actually PLAY. LOL. that would be stupid.

It just says (IN TEXT) "You have recieved a message." Just as normal. But instead of reading it, you can listen to it. SIMPLE!

I believe xbox has this, but its still a nice feature to increase the "community" appeal.

You do realize that if they give you Full in Game XMB features that this includes the music, the messaging and the video chat while in game. I direct your ATTENTION to the first E3 with the PS3. They showed that you would be able to simultaneously play a game and chat with your friends through video chat. If they pull this off XBOX360 will fall behind further IMO

I'm not sure how I'll react when i see the 'please update' message. I'll probably accidentally knock my ps3 over and break the damned thing.

Also, is it just me or does anyone else take their XMB very serious. All my music folders have icons, videos are in separate albums, games and photos in seperate albums. Just being able to pull up the xmb in game is awesome.
For example, the psn bowling game ability to play your hard drive music completely changes the scope of that game.
