Hilary Goldstein, IGN 360 Editor , Bashes Xbox 360

In a recent "3 Red Lights" podcast, Hilary Goldstein, editor in chief of IGN X360, completely attacks the Xbox 360 and argues that the PS3 will ultimately win out. He begins his rant at 1 hour 4 minutes into the podcast. Quite insightful and informative for all listeners.

they did the math, if you add up all the features of the ps3 like blu-ray, wifi, online, hard drive, etc, it will cost you $750 to buy a 360 with all the same features.

the ps3 can only drop in price, while now ms has to offer a blu-ray addon and pay sony, or keep supporting a dead format. ms has painted themselves into a corner with all the bad hardware, gimped skus, and overpriced accessories that their only choice now is to offer a new console in 3 years for $800.

i'll keep my launch ps3 beyond 3 years and more thank you.

Hell, 360 games aren't even on HD DVDs that should have been a red flag there, but maybe Msoft was smart in that decision but it would have given HD DVDs more of a chance. Hasn't most of the bashing been against Sony more than the PS3 though? A lot of people attacked Sony for the high price of the PS3. Some cried about how the Blu-ray drive made it too expensive. Those fools will soon look stupid though.

It's actually very surprising that he decided to attack the 360. A long time back he said he buckled up and bought a ps3 a little while after the time Tretton said he'd give 1200 to anyone who couldn't find one.

Anyway this isn't really a huge deal per se because the ps team attacks the ps3 all the time pointing out flaws and how they can be fixed. Hil probably had the same intentions with his words... You know some hard love to make things better.

To me he seemed like someone whos had a good look at the situation, the parties involved, weighed up the pros and cons of each as well as what he wants from a machine for himself and which way the mainstream direction is likely to go. Did some idiot on this podcast say xbox had better games than PS2? I had a PS2 and an xbox and I have alot of nostalgia for xbox games like halo, splinter cell, whatever...

I love my N64 to death but I know it's games weren't up to par with PS1's. And there's no way xbox's library could compete with ps2's, especially if your looking at international markets. That dude did decide to clarify what he said after goldetien told him that he was wrong but PS2 had dozens more great games than xbox.

Edit: I just listened to the rest of it. I think I get mad when people speak definitively when there speaking out of ignorance.

These guys think that digital distribution will outpace and outperform blu-ray this generation and that is ludicrous. People who tell you that digital distribution is relevent now are trying to push there there product hard NOW because there isn't much competition at this point or their platform is failing (HDDVD-microsoft).

Unlike high-def digital television, which the government is pushing forward by setting a date for all signals to be switched from analogue to digital, braodband internet's progress is being slowed by companies like comcast and time warner which are imposing limits on downloads to conserve bandwidth (or so they say).

Broadband internet is not widespread in the united staes by any means and it's growth is not as fast as people think it is. Prices for broadband are still too expensive for most Americans or it's not avialable in their area.

Many people are spoiled by living in or near populated areas and are provided choices for things like internet provider and service but half of the country is very rural and they don't have xbox live. They have a dvd player, they shop at walmart, they still play their PS2, they buy in bulk and they don't have internet fast enough to download movies on a wim. They'll upgrade their console of chioce when the price is right and blu-ray will look like a pretty sweet feature to these people beacuse, soon enough, it will be the de facto standard.

Digital distribution is the future, but the future is still a ways off.

Oh I'm not saying that it's totally unwarranted. Sony indeed dug a deep hole. But let's be honest here, much of that list above is pure fluff just to pad it up. Stupid comments and moves should be commented on by the media, but let's be honest here, the hate is continuing for far too long for no reason. Sony has gone a long way to getting back to where they should be, IE, not being stupid. Yet still, incessant bashing.

A PS3 port from the 360 is slightly inferior, and it is scored a whole point less. Yet Burnout hits the PS3, runs slightly better, and then reviewers immediately jump to the "it has no achievements and no custom soundtracks" bandwagon? C'mon. They are pleasing the readers of the largest console base. DMC4 has screen tearing on the 360? Same score! But man, if this was the PS3 version instead, we would hear about it for months.

The media is fueling this console war more than any gamer is. They make stupid remarks to get hits (how many sites have "confirmed" MGS4 port stories that turned out to be BS?) and then mock gamers when they get in a tizzy about it. And people keep playing into their hands. It's sad, and it makes being an actual gamer all the more... I don't know, I'm just so sick of the console war BS. I don't care if the 360 DMC has SLIGHTLY longer loads or the PS3 version has SLIGHTLY better motion blur... we talk about the console war more than the games themselves. And that's lame.

if you look for fud you will find it. Forget what people say. Compare all of those to what Microsoft done and drop the original xbox like a very bad habit. Not sure what you’re trying to prove here, but I quickly glanced through your headlines but a lot have nothing to do with Sony themselves whatsoever.

On E3 2005 Sony’s show trashed that of the 360 much to the dismay of xbox fans (the hardcore gamers, including journalists). Afterwards the media and a very effective internet viral marketing campaign struck back because of the use of target renders. A quote was taken out of context (Resistance was running on actual PS3 hardware, Killzone was a target render but this was swapped, apparently by mistake) and all of a sudden Sony were liars and the scum of the earth. Combine that with a few very stupid remarks by Sony executives and the PS3 was heading for disaster.

Two years later the 360 is already showing a decline in sales and no progress since Gears of War, a second generation title: everything is a HD rehash of old franchises. There is little exciting for it on the radar and now all of a sudden all the delays on PS3 have given it a ‘killer’ line-up for 2008 (unfortunately mainly consisting of HD rehashes of old games but maybe Kojima and Square can surprise us). Couple that with a not too bad performance of the PS3 and it starts to win back support from the gaming press.

But once again the media is largely ignoring the Wii, which killer line-up or not, will own 2008 and the rest of this generation. MS should get very worried. If Sony succeeds in taking them over, third party support will drop as fast as it came.

There is no way that HD-DVD can look better than Blu Ray. They store digital files. The files are exactly the same. Blu Ray can not look better than HD-DVD also for that matter.

If you had any knowledge on the subject you would know it is a fable that the one looks better than the other. Copy a Word file on CD, memory stick, DVD and hard disk. Open all of them and tell me which one is better. Hint: They will be the same - the storage media can provide only two things - capacity and transfer speed. Blu Ray wins on both counts - but for the current crop of HD movies - it does not matter. The speed and size on both is adequate. In future the higher transfer speed and space may make a difference to quality - but that is a moot point as HD-DVD died already.

First of all, the Playstation 3 lineup is nothing. Its more or less relying on Metal Gear and the promise of the future FF to sell the system to the masses. For those people, the lineup beats everything. But only for those absolute fans and its not going to light the world ablaze.

While Xbox relies primarily on Halo and Gears, it can NOW officially rely on a new franchise: Mass Effect, and they have the consolation of having the most diverse games on the current market.

I bought my 360 to play those big games like Ninja Gaiden, Gears of War, Mass Effect and a good dose of Blue Dragon. I didn't do it for "other" reasons like a ridiculous overhyped FF game. Mass Effect series may not be multiplayer, but its got the same production values where it counts for a 360 game.

And in 2008 since Sony is relying on Metal Gear Solid to sell the system, how do they anticipate going up against the likes of Splinter Cell 5 for instance?

I've never OFFICIALLY been interested in metal gear really since its not my thing and its not multiplayer. But I HAVE always bought Splinter Cell, and there are ALOT of gamers out there PC and console who think like I do now- they do not even give Metal Gear a chance. They buy SPLINTER CELL and nothing else, some of them wait ONLY for this franchise.

That's how far things have come, alot of people simply see Splinter Cell in a different light and like it far above metal gear solid. And if the trend continues as I see it, I really don't see 360 sales slowing down.

I mean I'll be blunt with you: I don't care about Metal Gear really or the Gran Turismo franchise, so why should I or anyone who thinks like I do pick up a PS3 this year?

The answer is "they" shouldn't, and they "won't". Sony will need alot more than just some flashy old franchises. If they want to honestly take on 360 where it counts, which is in europe, they will need EXCLUSIVE multiplayer games that are truly good.

Killzone 2 looks like trash, I'm sorry. And what is that other game? An unproven IP? No thanks on Little Big Planet, I'd much rather take my chances you see on a PROVEN franchise like Halo Wars.

And then there's Banjo 3 which I would rather get than "LITTLE BIG PLANET" as LBP has never proved itself, either.

Seriously, I'm beginning to wonder why people think Resistance 2 is that game. Its had one edition, and couldn't even compete with "GEARS" multiplayer let alone.......Half Life. And that's especially sad to me!

I don't think Lost Odyssey is even competing with Final Fantasy yet, so to think that those games like god forbid KILLZONE and SOCOM would compete with Halo, Gears or Ghost Recon is BLASPHEMY.

And it is TOTAL blasphemy, because many gamers respect the amazing quality Ubi Soft brings to their games. And thats why they buy 360 over anything else. They don't want all the single player games that playstation is invested in, and the first year games were pretty much garbage.

I'm not saying anything one way or another on 2008, but I can tell you Too Human is a franchise people will be watching. If it pulls it off, expect that to be system seller out of left field. And I see nothing even approaching Too Human's innovation on PS3, or that could touch these games or Lost Planet Colonies.

Outside of not knowing that you don't need to hook up a USB HDD to upgrade the PS3.. He really did go far to make his sane case for the PS3.

1. Bluray is the immediate factor for the PS3 for the next 4 years. NOT Digital Downloads.

2. PS3 hardware is cheaper than the 360, and will always be until MS releases another system.

The other guys on this podcast are 100% Total (edit) Fanboys. Their argument is that "Accomplishments will never work on the PS3, because of how successful it is on the 360" Hilary actually defended the PS3 again stating that its not FOR 360 owners, but for new PS3 owners. They sound like most of the brainwashed people that we have in the open zone. They bring up Microsofts own video rental service, only to then point out themselves how its no comparison to bluray. The SAD fact is that they actually TRY to make a case that XBL's Rental Service is 360's answer to people who want HD media. Hilary points out that the quality isn't there, and wont be because of file size restrictions and bandwidth which wont be around until Microsofts NEXT console. Hilary brings up that the same argument was made for DVD when the PS2 introduced it.

It boils down to Hilary using the common sense that until there is Digital Distribution of Videos, its one hell of a selling point for the PS3 ON TOP of the fact that is a Game system as well. And when given the choice, are families going to pick "Achievements over Bluray" when buying a game system for the home. Achievements which the PS3 will have.

I just have to say that I cant believe IGN would hire such complete fanboys to participate in their site. These guys went from Netflix to Comcast to Blockbuster to a guy saying that "The video store down the street from me said they wont sell bluray! So thats how bluray will end up" It reminds me of the same people who are delusional about HD-DVD's comeback. Or RROD rate. It really is as if they couldn't understand that Bluray IS a reason to buy the PS3, Much like kids could convince their parents to buy a PS2 because the family needed a DVD player. They were just defending the 360 by jumping from rock to argumentative rock. I am starting to see that Microsoft is getting a little of what they deserve right now. They focused so much on getting all the games out in 07 that they forgot to fix their console problem. I like the longer warranty but I just lost my 3rd xbox tonight and am about ready to move on. I am pissed because the 360 really is a kick ass machine when it works, but its quality needs to be called into question. It is just ridiculous that in just over 2 years I have returned 3 consoles for repair. I for one am glad that the 360 is no longer getting a pass because us 360 owners will only benefit from MS getting raked over the coals a little bit.
I will say I am very interested to see how they do in 08 as this problem only increases because of the units they are moving. I hope MS does something to make up for it sooner or later.

I am so glad to hear this coming out of a 360 fans mouth. It boggles my mind how microsoft is given a free pass when they knowingly sell their consumers a faulty product, hoping mass adoption would be achieved before they got heat for the RRoD. Meanwhile sony gets blasted for every single minute complaint all the way down to cross plat games being slightly inferior to their 360 counterparts. my mind boggles more from the fact that Sony got a free ride for the PS2 DRE problems with NO extended warranty or any kind of real compensation to it's customers. Yet the PS2 went on to sell 120 million+(many of them DRE replacements). At least Microsoft fixed my 360 FOR FREE. 1.5 years after I bought it no less. Sony wouldn't fix 2 PS2s that were only 5 months old each! If it RRoD's again in the next 1.5 years I'm still covered. Inconvenient? Yes. Worth it for the great games? YES!!! The X360 are not the New York GIANTS because the Giants are World Champs unlike the X360. You might be able to compare the X360 to the Oakland Raiders...but not the Giants. Yeah its a joke, just I am a Giants fan and hated the comparison lol.

Man, game journalists are just like the kids all over the internet, they had a favorite console the last few generations and they are having trouble moving past it. Facts be dammed, they will claim the PS3 is god and all other consoles are just wannabes. Reality is quite different, the Ps3 is a deeply flawed console, if it were made by anyother company it would have already failed, it does not do ANYTHING as well as the 360 and it has no games, yet journalists continue to push it on the public and heap praise on it like it is even in the same legue with the 36o. 360 is a gaming console for gamers, PS3 is a bluray player for Sony, and Sony should not be getting a pass for selling us all out.

And for the record I did have a PS3 once, I sold it with all my games, I still had bluray movies so I purchased a standalone bluray player, the PS3 looked ridiculous as a bluray player in my home theater setup, the grill look did not go with the sqaure look of my other componants.

Who really didn't think that the big publishers, and of course the little peon blogs would be there to start sucking up to the Playstation brand once the momentum was shifting? There's no way to be polite about this so I'll just be blunt.

Xbox fanatics were high several months ago about the press being on their side, great games, great reviews, good support, bigger install base, and pretty much everything under the sun.

It was all true, and PS3 fans had to suck it up while they more or less had...nothing

Meanwhile, PS3 fans hated the media, turned their backs on them, and vowed to never bother with most of them again.

Well, look at what we have here. All of a sudden the media outlets are beginning to be endearing towards Sony and it's fanbase, and guess who's there to eat it all up... All the while, the 360 that was the top of the line is quietly falling from grace.

Typical flip-flop media bullcrap. This sort of thing happens in politics, it happens with celebrities, and it happens now in video games, it's despicable. Utterly despicable. The sad part is that 99% of us that swear we're "onto it" and think we're too smart to trust certain sources again, are the same ones who flip-flop right along with them. I predicted this months ago, many many months ago.

Before this year ends, and as a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it were around the time of July, when the PS3 was at about it's low point, the 360 and it's fanbase will be in the same boat.

Hated by the press, ridiculed by the press, and games will get poor reviews. Fans will feel hurt, alienated, insecure(they ALL are now anyway, but even more so), and just like the PS3 zealots from long ago, will become self-righteous. Watch it happen, people, and more than likely...since we human beings NEVER LEARN, the PS3 fanbase will turn into the same snobbish, snarling freakshows that the 360 crowd was just over 7 months ago. It's a sickening cycle that's perpetuated by the media and indulged by the fans.

I hope nobody takes this personally, this should be a lesson to all of us. Start formulating your own opinions and don't be snobs. Everyone falls from grace when you're at the top, and this is no different. If this generation continues flip-flopping annually, expect it to never stop. Each fanbase will be at each others throats in the summer time, and they'll all be eating crow and have hurt pride because they thought the media would stick up for them.

I hate to say this folks, I really do, but a lot of us need a wake up call. The same folks that held onto reviews from third parties with a death grip are having their pride killed. It's unnecessary. This is why YOU need to formulate your own opinions, this is why EVERYONE needs to take metacritic with a grain of salt, and this is why people need to stop being insecure about whether or not the mass media agrees with them.

They're not your family, and they won't be on your side forever. Be secure and be sure about your own choices and it won't matter what anyone else thinks. All of our opinions can co-exist peacefully, it doesn't have to be some mindless p*ssing contest.

For the record, who cares what Hilary Goldstein has to say, or his co-workers. Listen to it, consider the points, agree, disagree, but if you have your console, and certain things appeal to you when others don't, it doesn't matter how good or bad the points another individual makes are, what matters is that YOU have what YOU want. We're so caught up with our stances being backed up by publishers that there's no identity for gamers anymore.

Media will build PS3 up and rip it down again as soon as the fud no longer generates attention.

Its how it works, once PS3 being ontop is no longer useful it will be ripped down as soon as any weakness is sensed! and if there isn't one and people get bored of *the building up* of the PS3 and ripping down the 360; the media will create one starting all over again.

The only problem many gamers never knew they were in this cycle as the industry grew bringing in more demographics of older gamers etc.

Reading fud is one thing when theres some practical reason its being pressented but when gamers goals are to look for fud due to some fantical agenda when gamers only wan't to know what they should spend their hard earned cash on is another.

Why do it?... Why spend all day looking for ways to make one console look good and another look bad.

You also have to take into account not only does the media need to create strife to make money, get sponsers and hits the media and some of the industry and gamers are scared of the Sony MACHINE, let me repeat myself... folks fear the Sony machine.

I fear I can not post strong opinions the bulk of this site does not agree with, I'm sure many people think to themselfs about this and some of the media.

Games are a top 3 addiction for me behind females and drugs in that order. Anyway, I bought a 360 at launch because there was no way I could hold out a year for the PS3. The first year was rough. Dead Rising was the first okay game and I didn't care for Call of Duty 3 or Oblivion. I sold a kidney for a PS3 at launch and am much happier. I sold my 360 and my copy of Gears (because Resistance is better) and never looked back. Maybe when the new XBOX system comes out I'm sure I'll buy it. It will be blu-ray and wi-fi. It will rip me off some more for online, but hey, why not. All it will take is a fat bag trees, some brew while I'm playing what I convince myself to be the ish, and I'll defend my habbits some more.

Microsoft had to release the 360 before the ps3 because if they did not, we would not even be talking about the 360 right now in the same sense. Lets say that microsoft did wait, and release the 360 alongside the ps3 with the "HD-DVD drive" with identical price.(which is what I am assuming they would do, release it with hddvd, hdmi, and higher price) and no RROD. Theres 30 million xbox owners and 120 million ps2 owners, thats already 4 times as many "potential buyers." So according to those stats if by now the ps3 sold what 10 million the 360 would be around 3 or 4 million. Combine that with the fact that a lot of people did not like the xbox at all and the playstation brand recognition. When you add all of these things up the xbox 360 would get slaughtered. Instead they released it a year earlier, and in the second year when ps3 did come out the 360 would be cheaper and it would have it many big name games to counteract the ps3 and this strategy worked until the 40GBps3 came out. Who knows maybe if microsoft had fixed the RROD problem before they could be winning by a much larger margin then now. The point is if you look at it now, it really was a lose-lose situation for microsoft in terms of actually winning this console war. If they released it same time as ps3 they would get destroyed, and since they decided to release it before without all the extras that ps3 had, they were winning to a certain point until ps3 started to sell more worldwide. This worked out for them for the 2 and a half years it has been out. They have the highest attatch rate, and currently the best library of games out of the bunch. The bad thing is they lost 1 billion dollars on repairs for RROD. Hindsight is 20/20 but if microsoft could do it again the only difference would be is to either fix the RROD before they released, or slightly after the launch of the 360's, to fix and do a recall of the small amount of 360 sold at that time. If you ask a microsoft rep now, they still think it was a good idea in releasing the console before sony, that was there only hope in coming close in this console race. Everyone already knows sony ps3 will win, but 2009 is the real year to see just where microsofts xbox 360 fits.

Here's the cherry on top. XBOX LIVE people are jerks compared to the ones on PLAYSTATION network. Actually, just look at the XBOX defenders here and almost everywhere and it's hostile, borderline degrading (noobs), and usually ignorant. But on the Playstation network the people are civil and chill. I never had a complaint. I think the 360 attracts a poor crowd and from what I hear a lot of people dislike the same thing about the online environment. And to make it all worse they want people to pay for it. Thanks

All in all, PS3 will eventually overtake the 360. Yeah, PS3 doesn't have alot of top games and I'm sure that's going to change. The 360 has been out longer so it's had a head start. But look at the Wii, not an amazing range of games and it's outselling both the PS3 and the 360. If Nintendo can do it (sell a console with only a few top games), so can Sony. But, people liked the look of the Wii remote which is the main reason why it's selling so well. I can see another price drop, more so when the new shape PS3 is released. Not sure if the PS3 will overtake the Wii, but never right Sony off as they're a huge company with more money than Microsoft and Nintendo. They won't give up the fight...:)

It is actually healthy to criticize your console of choice.
The idea is that you want your console to be anything it can be.
For example, people who have PS3 look at Xbox live and want the features for in game massaging etc. At some point this year this will happen thanks to the customer base making their voices heard.
its the same on the Xbox side where people don't want RROD issues, so MS have to re-design the hardware for new machines and extend the warrantys for the old one.
If you don't ask for it, you don't get it! its as simple as that.

Even the most ardent PlayStation fans cannot believe what is happening right now. So much media criticism and doubt with the Xbox - even though it had a fantastic 2007 and was highly accoladed by the industry. As soon as the clock hit 12am for 2008, its dismissed and the PlayStation 3's behind is licked and kissed.

I honestly think the whole reason why the 360 is losing face is because of the hardware issues. If MS somehow managed to make a 99% reliable console, you should bet that more people would buy it. I know a few people exactly right now who's on the fence about getting a 360. I told them it has a big library of action games right now, XBL has a lot of downloadable games. But nope, they still won't buy one. And they don't want the PS3 either for some reason.

But all in all, MS should realize people DO want the 360, and a lot of owners are happy with the games they have. But with such a questionable hardware, they are losing potential sales, losing current customers, and worst of all, losing money (like that matters to microsoft).

That's why MS dropped the HDD from the 360. The losses on the original xbox were so big, they couldn't afford that again from an investor relations POV. While they have plenty of cash, investors epxect them to build high margin businesses with it, like the windows and office businesses are. If the 360 will fail as the xbox did, they will have a hard time convincing shareholders that continuing in the console business is a good way to spend their money.

It was a tough choice, and making the decision between the two sucked. In the end I chose a PS3 I knew I couldn't handle my system going out on me and wireless and bluray were to sweet to pass on. I have admitted multiple times in 2007 that xbox 360 was a better system for the now but I saw this as an investment and looked at PS3 as better choice for the future and i believe that is what Hil is saying too.

However up to this year xbox 360 has had the better games. Xbox Live is better then PSN.

I wish the games where on PS3 with the Xbox controller. And that Xbox live and PSN where cross connected. Or that the games like CoD 4 could be merged. But it will never be.

Im guessing that by the end of this year PS3 and Xbox 360 will be equal and the 360 will lose after that. So for me that means that I will have to buy a PS3 sometime later this year.

But it would seem that more and more games become cross-platform. Even games that previously where PS only like Devil May Cry.

The bad Sony press ended around the same time the PS3's price dropped to below $400.

Here's my fearless prediction: all these "360 is in trouble" stories will end when the price of a 360 platinum/pro drops below $250, as long as this happens soon. If MS waits until 2009, it will be too late.

Due to the emergence of bluray as the standard hi-def media format, and the better quality reputation of Sony's hardware, MS will have to maintain a $150 to $200 difference between the 360 and the PS3. Otherwise, people will not hesitate to pay a little more to pick a PS3 over a 360. On the other hand, if it's cheap enough, the 360 may replace the wii as everybody's favorite second console.

Having said all that, I think Goldstein is wrong. The wii and the PS2 have even fewer features and less hi-def functionality than the 360, yet both are selling like gangbusters. Price still trumps all other factors.

Hindsight is always 20/20 and coming out with a console first means you have to make alot of decisions without alot of data.

Having a base system like the 360 and charging an arm and a leg for addons is a good business decision provided the rest of the industry follows suit, but every single console/handheld in the current next gen now has built in WiFi (DS, PSP, PS3, Wii) and the 360 just looks ridiculous charging $100.00 for something standard everywhere else. If the rest followed this strategy of selling a base system and charging for all the extras, it wouldn't be mentioned as a liability, but it makes MS stand out in the crowd considering every one else went the other way.

Going with built in Blu-ray was a huge risk for Sony, but they had an agenda considering it is their format in the first place they were trying to push. If Blu-ray failed you would hear about it till the cows came home that it is packed with a useless HD movie player (like being tagged with a Betamax player you have to own). Likewise, MS made a sound decision not to include a player especially considering when they designed the system many years ago, the HD format war was very nebulous.

Those are 2 pretty big decisions that MS made with very little data to go by that in hindsight are coming back to bite them, but could they have seen this coming? I say no way.

The other big issue is obviously the reliability. I read an interesting article in a gamer's magazine recently (I think it was Edge)that talked about MS troubles getting into the Japanese market. Japanese are very loyal to their own brand and likewise a product made in Japan carries more weight in the quality and reliability department than say a Chinese or Korean made product. This is true around the world and especially in the Japanese homeland. MS is now coming into their market and telling them to take a chance on an American made product that is in direct competition with their own beloved brands (Sony and Nintendo). How bad is it going to look when 30%-40% or more of these American products are self-destructing? It will only reinforce the Japanese loyalty to their own products.

It also speaks that MS is a software company and you develop sofware with a totally different mindset then you do hardware. Software can be sold incomplete or with some known bugs because it is expected you will patch and provide service packs to fix them and to enhance them. This mentality cannot be taken to hardware though and it appears MS sacrificed quality for time to market and it has bit them in the derrier. Now, I'm not saying MS would just fix the hardware with an update like you can with software, but they must have weighed the pros and cons of getting to market first over a more reliable system and I can see 1 of 3 scenarios: either they had very bad quality assurance data to go by (which I would doubt), or they figured they would take the risk and just cross that bridge when they had to or the cost and time to redesign the system was too great and would have cost them the market. I tend to favor the last scenario and MS just figured they would deal with it when they had to.

To their credit MS has adeptly kept this ugly stepchild of a problem in the back room when company comes over as well as can be expected even in some cases convincing the public that their generous 3 year full coverage warranty shows how they stand behind their product. I'm amazed how some people (even on this site) have swallowed that kool-aid to the point they are praising MS for such support when MS created the catastrophe in the first place. Granted a game machine is a luxury and not a necessity because if Ford had 1/3 of all their cars stop working after 6 months, they would be out of business. MS just gives you a wink and a pat on the back and says don't worry, we will fix it for you and have it back good as new in a month, because heck it is only a game machine, go read a book for a while.

On the contrary though, even with MS missteps, I don't see doom and gloom for the 360. It will continue to sell and will be successful during this generation.

I came into buying a console with no bias whatsoever toward one system or another. I chose the PS3 because it was reliable and it had the builtin features I wanted. Even though the library was smaller with fewer top titles, I figured it would catch up. I would still buy a 360 today if they came out with a sku that has the builtin features I want and I was assured the hardware problems were a thing of the past.

I think they all made great points, and that they were simply laying out the facts. I know I had to make the choice between a 360 or PS3 solely based on the RRoD. I just don't have the money to spend on a console that could be that un-reliable. Now don't get me wrong if I stumble across an extra $400 I'm sprinting to my nearest EB to pick up a 360 and play some of the phenomenal exclusives, but from a practicality stand-point the PS3 won out for me.

Looking to the future though, I also see the PS3 really holding it's own simply beacuse it is more powerful, the Blu-Ray capability, the added bonus of exchanging your hard drive($150 for 250GB), free online service, etc. I hope the 360 has a long and successful life but I think MS will have to debut a new console before the PS3 is halfway through it's lifespan.

HD-DVD losing badly does not help either in this scenario. If you are a XB360 with HD-DVD owner that had to send in the XB360 for repairs more than once, have scratched disks, and now a useless dongle - then I think you would also be little edgy after a while.

All in all, I think gamers are benefiting from the "console wars". Just think if it was just Xbox or just PS3 etc. MS, Sony and the developers wouldn't have any competition, so they'd never have to worry about 1 upping eachother and then the potential for being flooded by mediocre crap would greatly increase. I love my PS3 and when my checking account rebounds from the $700.00 I dropped on it (80 GB back in August) I'm definitely going to pick up a 360. Sony isnt in trouble because they have the playstation name. If the 360 still has games that are on par with the PS3 then they wil be fine and i dont see any reason why it wont. As for the XBL download service from what all reports show people love downloading the crap and personally I like the quality of the shows and movies.I don't like the fact that we cant use store bought HDD's. A console is defined by its games. The original Nintendo, the Genesis and the Super Nintendo, the Playstation, and the Playstation 2. The console that remains successful has the most games with the most variety. The N64, Dreamcast, GameCube, Turbo Grafx, and Xbox all suffered because they either focused on one genre, had no third party support, and/or were late arrivals to the market. Why did the PS2 take off, because it offered a variety of different genres. Point (1) Gamers follow the games.

Point (2)Companies are out to make money. Every company is out to make money; Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, Wal-mart, Kraft, companies that make wheelchairs. The goal is to make a profit while keeping the business afloat. To do that you've got to be smart, plan ahead, diversify and expand. That is what a company does, so a company is not evil for having that as a goal. If YOU started a company, your goal would be to make money. The thing that can taint a company is 'how' it goes about making money. Microsoft entered the industry to get a piece of the pie (nothing wrong there). They offer their product and if consumers choose to, they can buy it. In my opinion, they made a middle of the road system wherein they can nickel and dime their consumers to upgrade (buy Live, buy wi-fi, buy harddrives, etc). The goal: keep costs down (which is how RROD was born) and beat Sony to the game launch-wise. Gamers want into the next-gen as soon as possible, so they'll pay rather than wait. Sony focused on value; stuff as much into this console as possible. With more of a lead, they can afford to invest more into the future. Like it or not, the PS3 IS a great value for all its features and their inter-functionality. Great value at a great price, but no awareness of that value. Its future-proof, but during the present you want it now. You want games now! Until you need the other stuff, you're not focused on it. MS knew this, and capitalized on it as evident by their E3 presentation. They had the games 'now'. Sony's E3 was we'll have the games, "be patient". We're Americans...we like 'now'. Which is why the Xbox took off here. However, undoubtedly the present soon becomes the future. Sony is reaching that point wherein they begin cranking out the games. The Blu-ray through consumer-choice is defeating HD-DVD. People are beginning to see the value.

Point(3) - Nobody's perfect, and neither is Sony, but Sony is still Sony. Kaz says silly things, Ken says silly things, Phil says silly things. They're people, they can't flawlessly tell the future, or word things perfectly. Sometimes they get excited over their product or selling us on them. Because one guys messes up, you can't blame a whole company on them. If a guy at McDonald's pisses me off in Los Angeles, that doesn't mean the McDonald's guy in Miami agrees with him. The 360 had a slow start game-wise, but picked up speed as time went on. The same was/is true for Sony. The architecture was different and it takes time. You don't learn an architecture in a day. You don't develop a game in a day. It takes time. Sony got ports of games that were on the 360, months later. But it still got most of them within the same year. People dismiss that because its already out on another system, but on top of that, they released their own first party games (R&C, Uncharted, Resistance, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Folklore). That's in roughly one year's time. And notice the variety of said games. The games 360 touts are Halo 3, Gears of War, BioShock, and Mass Effect (for a time Crackdown. Look at the variety there...shooter, shooter, shooter, shooter/rpg. There are alot of games on the 360, but which ones do gamers gravitate to. This is where fanboys butt heads. Sure ports were not as good as the 360s, but they were nowhere near as bad as led to believe (maybe Madden). But who would really think that would last forever? That PS3 wouldn't at least rise to the point wherein it AT LEAST equalled in quality. Some first party games were late, but who really thinks that will last forever? Will some games still be late? Likely, can't make a game in day nor can you change one on the fly. But Sony is still Sony. Their strategy has always been variety and thirdparty support. They have more studios inhouse than MS and Nintendo combined, pumping out games in different genres. Those studios haven't gone anywhere. Games WILL be released(and they'll be exclusive to Sony). Third parties can't survive on MS alone, especially globally. They WILL make games for both systems, so Sony will share games with 360. They PS3 WILL evolve. Do some research and see how far its come. Its only a few features away from Xbox live, and those features aren't terribly difficult to emulate (I'm not even including Home in this). There's no reason that the PS3 can't enjoy an extensive library seen on the PS2. A majority of the negativity towards Sony is rooted from impatience, or short-sightedness. Silly execs say silly things, but they also said that they saw the industry's third parties merging together, they realized they needed to move away from "buying exclusives" (bigger companies are going to have to rely on bigger markets, thusly they 'have' to make PS3 games to make money), and that they needed to build their first party titles for differentiation (thusly snatching up studios). And its working.

Point (4) Hate Microsoft for 1 reason. And that's putting out a faulty system. Not for nickel and diming consumers, because consumers are at fault for that(and maybe they can't afford all the bells and whistles at that particular time). Not for games, cause though 'shooters' are eye cathers on the system, most PS3 gamers would welcome Gears of War, BioShock, Mass Effect, and though I find it painfully overrated, Halo 3. Studios just make the games, Sony and MS publish them. The key is who decides to publish what. Not for fanboys, cause Sony's got their own, and neither is responsible for what you or I say. The 360 is a great machine when its working (remember Point 1), the games make the console. So if that's true, if the console can't generally last 6 months, then its a bad console. And if a company knows this and puts it out anyway, then you should have every right to harbor some resentment.

Point (5) No matter what it is - a toaster, a TV, a car, or a videogames console - if the thing has a high failure rate and its common knowledge, don't continuously buy it. That's a no brainer.

I totally with Hill... it makes total sense. Although I can afford all three consoles i made an educated and long-term decision in terms of what consoles I wanted to purchase and decided to go with the PS3. Better multimedia / gaming console overall no matter what anyone says. In 2-3 years from now MS will drop their next console and that strategy will bite them in the ass even if it is 3 times the power of the PS3 (hard to imagine that). This console cycle will be longer than everyone expects but Nintendo and MS will have to release their new consoles to keep the pace with Sony in 3 years from now. Mark my words.
