1 - I can't say
that any future Mario game will never be greater than Mario 64, but in my opinion it is still the best in the series.
It was the first game ever to prove that the transition from 2-D to 3-D could lead to good things. Not to mention it brought the use of the analog stick to console platformers.
I would never rate a game as perfect, but Super Mario 64 was about as close as one could possibly get. Super Mario Galaxy sure has a lot to live up to.

I totally agree. Galaxy is great(my bro just got it today) and the very best Mario (and game in general) for a long while. But Mario 64 is just that one game that still rocks.

Look at how much the transition from 2D to 3D did for mario 64. All the new moves mario got the many innovative ways to get stars a lot of stuff like that. I havnt played the full mario galaxy but i have played a bit of it and it comes close but its more of an expansion to mario 64 than a reinvention to the series. Unless we start playing mario in a virtual world or sumthin i dnt think any game can re invent mario like mario 64 did. All of marios moves returned in galaxy but i didnt really see any new moves besides the wii mote thigs

When super Mario goes virtual reality, then maybe. But until then, there is only one 1st time, and the first time Mario Went 3D was something special most of us would agree is going to be hard to recapture.

3 - Since when was Mario 64 the pinnacle of the series?
It's not nearly as good as SMB3,4 or Yoshi's Island in my opinion.

Other then being the first game to make the transtition between 2-D to 3-d and still be great, Mario 64 was good. The best mario game was SMB 3. That just had so much going for it, the different suits, mini-boss battles, the minigames, mario 3 for the NES was the best.

7 - Mario64 was a milestone in the Jump'n'Run Genre
Perfect controls, big beautifully designed 3D levels, colorful. I really enjoyed Mario 64, but I wouldn't ever go so far and say that any future mario couldn't match the legacy of 64. There is always room to set new standards in the future.

Nothing will ever compare to the N64. Bond games suck these days, they pale in comparison to Goldeneye. The Zelda games pale in comparison to the N64 Zeldas. Mario is no different. Hell.... even the wrestling games were the best on the 64. I still play the hell out of my 64. My Wii will collect dust unless they make another star-fox like the N64 version. Banjo Kazooie was great for N64, the second one...(banjo-tooie?) was horrible to me.....
I'm sorry but nothing will ever be better than the N64. My years with the 64 were the greatest years of my life.... when I wasn't even a teenager >.>. I'm 15 now and I would give almost anything to go back to the 64 when it was in its prime. Nintendo oughta re-release the N64, cheapest console in the race, most games, best games...
Also, werent the cartridges 60 bucks a pop? I dont really remember anymore..

Wow shaka I think youve won the most ignorant moron on this site....
I think most of us knew this from other stupid crap you say but you truly are a$$backwards
Mario 64 is probably one of the most praised if not the most praised game of all time as well as zelda 64
Mario 64 broke the barrier and showed us the future of games as well as zelda with such a huge open world..
Just because you are a moron doesnt make your opinions right... everyone knows this hell look at the reviews they had and look at the impact they had....next time you want to make stupid comments just for the hell of it..why dont you write em down and toss them in the garbage cuz thats where they belong

Personally i disliked Mario 64. Its stupid to say its a perfect platformer or even its the best mario game. The main reason its looked upon so fondly is because it was the first 3D platformer that actually played remarkably well but the game pulled a horrible trick to forcibly lengthen it by making you collect 50 or something stars before you could fight bowser, effectively making you play most levels more than once.
If you compare insomniacs Spyro the dragon series on PS1, you'll see what im saying. Spyro was a very similar platformer, arguably just as good as Mario 64 but it doesn't have this reputation of being perfect.
The only perfect Mario game i've ever played is Super Mario World on SNES, it was the pinnacle of 2D platforming, i can't think of a single fault for it.

26 - What about Shaka's comment
obviously that guy is a real gamer...lol
If I had to pick, Well I bought Mario Galaxy today, thanks to my Wii breaking down, I can't play it.(Yes a Nintendo Console goes bad)
.
.
.
1. Super Mario Bros [You'll never forget that one]
2. Super Mario 3 [Now that game was the quirky on with all the new elements]
3. Super Mario World [A new meaning to the 2-d platformer, with lush graphics]
4. Super Mario 64 [First 3-D of the bunch but I think SMB was played the most, by casual gamers]
What surprising is, Every 1st Mario that debuted on a Next-Gen console has Pushed the Game to new heights. 1, 4, 5, but that's why Super Mario 3, while being on the NES also was so special in it's own right.
It was like the 80's era of the Mario games, just different.
When a game moves to the Next-gen console you expect certain things like Graphics and such to be BETTER. That's why for me 3 did a lot, without being the Next-Gen version, for which those were expected to do more with Better Hardware.

27 - Super Mario Galaxy
The game may not live up to the legacy of Mario 64. But it really doesn't have to. For the time M64 came out it did something special make that cross over from 2d to 3d. Obviously they took a really good game expanded and made Galaxy which in my opinion is the best game in it's series and one of the best platformers to date..

Personally, my favorite Mario game was Super Mario Bros 3. Always been a staple in my collection. I've never actually owned Mario 64, I remember renting a N64 back when I was 5 or 6 and playing it thinking "Wow, this is awesome!"
But Mario 3 is just the one Mario game that never gets old with me.
