US indie studio signed for God of War conversion

Texas-based Blast Factor developer Bluepoint helps switch PS2 titles to PS3.

Sony has announced plans to release retooled versions of its God of War PS2 games for the PS3 - and has signed up US independent studio Bluepoint to help with the conversion.

The new versions of God of War 1 and 2 will boast Trophy support and HD visuals, all stored on a Blu-ray disc - which conveniently arrives in stores a few months before the arrival of 2010's God of War 3.

The games were originally developed by SCEA's Santa Monica Studio.

1 - Cool
Sony should create a studio or two to re-release PS2 classics in HD form. Since they aren't creating a brand new game from the ground up, it would be cool to get HD PS2 games every 2-3 months or so. Ah...A guy can dream =/

Not a bad idea. I suppose the future possibility of such collections will depend somewhat on how this initial attempt goes.

I know I plan to help by purchasing a copy! Got to do my part, after all...

I still have the original two copies. Guess their going on eBay...:-p One less reason to hold unto my PS2. If Sony did this for all their most popular PS2 collections I would be happy. Just imagine...Shadow of Colossus and Ico...a few months before the new game. Awesome.

On an unrelated note, looking forward to the PSN update tonight:-)

I just registered at N4G to second that. GoW I & II in HD-glory and with Trophy-Support = Awesome. Actually the dictionary should look like this:
awesome: [adj] GoW I & II on BluRay in HD with Trophy-Support; see also: amazing, great

I know they still stand the test of time pretty well, but what if they do something similar with Ico and SOTC, to precede The Last Guardian? I'm not sure how much it really costs them to hire a studio to re-tool already existing art assests and stuff, but it may pay off in the long run if

A: existing fans re-purchase the game, and
B: more owners buy TLG due to finally playing the first two.

6 - Sony you sly dog hehe
I see a pattern developing here. Instead of just making PS2 games avaliable and working on all PS3. Sony will give its major PS2 games HD treatment with improve proformance and then sell them either on PSN when the PS2 is no longer supported or Disc based games like now.

I still think that they are now able to create a patch for induvidal PS2 game for compatibility on the PS3 for BC less PS3. They are not stating this because they know fans with BC less PS3 will ask for all other PS2 games BC.

When this rumor surfaced i suspected that they will release a patch to run both GOW games on BC less PS3. The only problem i saw was that people will know for sure that Sony have managed to emulate PS2 games on the PS3 and it would have been a big headache for Sony. This solves that problem perfectly. Just say that they are remastered specifically for the PS3 and no one will ask any questions about PS2 BC. Its perfect. We get a better GOW1,GOW2 version in the end which will sell even more copies of GOW1,GOW2. Everyone wins.

Yet again we see why Sony are the masters in this console business.

You know I would love to see some PS2 RPGs remastered. It would be cheap to do, as Atlus is doing with Persona on the PSP and Sony did with Tekken:Dark Resurrection on PSN and now GoW.

I'm more than ready to pay for remastered HD versions (720p FTW), with trophy support and budget conscious price tag.

Come on Atlus/Sony give me P3/P4 :D

SE could bring DQ VIII

6.3 - Thats the beauty of this approach
I also have copies of GOW1 and 2 but even though i own them i will buy this again. I am sure alot of hardcore GOW fans will rebuy them again.

This approach will not only get those that haven't bought GOW yet but will also get use that already bought it to consider rebuying them.

Its perfect because the price is right and there will be many improvements.

If Sony were to just re-release them on their current PS2 form it will be mostly people that haven't bought them yet that will buy them. There is also more incentive for people to buy them now that they are remastered.

7 - So does this means.
that we can see some polygonal upgrade to the overall look of the games, or what? I don't know the technicalities of giving a game an HD look, so I asked.

Meshes won't be remodeled. You'll see no screentearing, better load times, a solid framerate, and more clean textures, as well as no "jaggies."

It's not going to be a huge leap, but it's going to look great.

7.2 - Well it means the game will look sharper then before so it will look really good
also they r giving trophys to them which is pretty sweet as well, I don't think they will make a major graphical change but a good noticeable change from the previous versions

raztad - 99 days 1 hour ago

I dont think the remastered version will boast a bigger polygon count but it will look sharper.

This was done before: Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection PSP was remastered to be playable on the PS3 at 1080p.

Here is a screenshot: http://www.threespeech.com/...

It looks pretty good considering it is actually a remastered psp game.

8.4 - But you see...
if you buy GOW I and GOW II "new" (you know PS2 classics) they retail for $19.99 each. So you get both games for the same price you would pay for them "new" on one disc, upgraded to 720p and with a demo of GOW3 (I'm assuming, I have no inside info). I don't know why Sony is ripping anyone off. I have both games and will probably pick this up too. But it's really for those who are just getting into Sony games, first time buyers, who have never experienced GOW. It's all good.

Can they do this for Socom 2?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

and also convert the servers to run on PSN servers instead? So no cheaters and no lag?

OMG I would pay 100 bucks for a port of S2.

13 - I been saying this ever since sony announced bluray...
I remember when I had a membership for "Gamespot" I made a thread "Of why bluray would be beneficial".

I said if sony & devs & others ever decided to use bluray to its potential, u will see why bluray is definately needed and why devs & even movies/tv shows directors would definately see what bluray can bring to the table.

Few examples:
1. Game series all on 1 bluray just like sony is doing now with the god of war series. Imagine if they decide to do the same with the mgs series, twisted metal series, etc. etc. Wouldnt that be awesome?

2. Same thing with movies. Imagine having the whole spiderman series on one bluray or lord of the rings, x men etc. etc. Also they can take it a step further and lets say Transformers 2 the movie but also add the game into it & sell it for lets say $70 to $75. Sounds pretty cool to me.

3. tv shows. friends series, desperate housewives etc. etc. all on one bluray. cartoon series anime series, just think of how easily they can take advantage of bluray.

13.1 - Agree
Thats why i said many times before that as this gen progress in parallel with the HD era the x360 will be left behind. HD era requires Blu-ray, that is the bottom line. As the HD era progress, consumers will ask for more content and more multi/cross-media products. Sony understood this from the begining. DVD9 will not cut it in the long run. This is why i see the x360 struggling really hard in coming years. Multi-plats which MS have relied on heavily and need to survive in the long run will not fare well compare to their PS3 counterparts. Its only a question of weather 3rd party devs will utilise the advatage of blu-ray and standard HD in the long run for the PS3 versions of their games. Even this early in this gen we are seeing new game engines struggle with capacity limitations with DVD9.

If they did all 3 on one, that would be awesome.
GTA III

Maybe even the stories as well.

19 - I'm not getting my hopes up for now-gen graphics update
coz that'll take much work, unless they use the older assests such as animations and sounds.. all they need to do is convert old PS2 codings into something that the PS3 can read. and also High resolution textures.
