Violent video games linked to child aggression

About 90 percent of U.S. kids ages 8 to 16 play video games, and they spend about 13 hours a week doing so (more if you're a boy). Now a new study suggests virtual violence in these games may make kids more aggressive in real life.

1.1 - this is true I think according to me......
I myself have broken every controller with every new system that I've boughten...

PSone-2 Original Remotes_That's when I was 6 years old.
PS2-1 DUALSHOCK2_12 years old
GAMECUBE-1 Original Remote then I bought a wave bird_11 years old
XBOX-1 S CONTROLLER_14 years old
PS3-2 SIXAXIS REMOTES_16 years old

As of right now I keeping my cool. I figured out after ten years of playing you can always retry in a game so there's no point to break the controller unless you really need to lose your steam.

@ 1.1

The point here isn't getting aggressive and smashing your pads, it's about getting aggressive with other people and your friends. The article states that kicking and hitting other children and getting into fights is the "aggressive behaviour" it's refering to. Now I wouldn't know anything about this, I got my first "uber violent" game at the age of 16, and that was GTA3. By that time I think I was mature enough to handle the content, and I think my parents thought that too which is why they got me it.

Now, because I wasn't subject to violent games before then, I can honestly say it didn't have any impact on my "aggressive behaviour" at all. Would it have if I were 12? I don't know, I suspect yes if I wasn't mature enough to understand the content. And that is the key really isn't it? Understanding that this is a game, and it's no way to go on in real life. Everyone gets frustrated with games and I'm guessing that if everyone is honest, they've all thrown their pads down at some point, but thats frustration, and that goes away.

Bottom line is, these kids between the ages of 12-15 shouldn't be playing mature games unless they are mature enough to understand them, and that call (and responsibility) lies with the parents.

If that's true, i should be short, have a huge mustache, and a blond princess as my girlfriend...

13 hours is easy to be done, but since when was 13 hours of gaming linked to aggressive games only??

"Now a new study suggests"

Yeah and i suggest you STFU, suggesting doesn't mean jack.

lack of fresh air.
GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY! Get a little exercise.

Being holed up in one room all the time is not healthy for anyone, child or adult.

8 - It's clearly the case...
that M/18 rated games should not be played/viewed by children any more than pornographic or violent movies should be viewed by them.

If children get access to this material then the parents are primarily to blame.

Hopefully these studies will lead to the legal enforcement of age ratings on games and ensure that those who give children access to inappropriate material are prosecuted.

The danger is that these reports simply lead to all games being censored for everyone (Germany is an example off the top of my head) and I suspect we all agree that would be a bad thing for gaming.

These people are geniuses! They proved what Bandura has already proved years ago. Violent things make children more violent (hooray!) That's why we have a rating system for movies, TV shows, and video games. If a child whose minds are malleable get their eyes on this mature-people-only stuff, then parents need to start cracking down.

9.1 - Except there is no proof yet
It's related for sure, but unlike Bandura that controlled for personality differences, these studies have not done so. So perhaps they get the most violent kids to start with, give them a violent game and guess what! The kid is Violent still!

There is no evidence of kids not being vilent before games and then becoming violent after. It's nearly impossible to control for since you'd have to study the kid for a while to figure out what aggression level they could be and then watch them after to see if it changed.

CNN isn't credible for anything. I watched them talk about this and at the bottom of the screen the spelled mortal kombat mortal combat which kind of shows how much research is done on this.

11 - It's True
painfully obvious however, you have a controlled subject that follows an agressive pattern, then that will of course seem natural to them...

13 hours a week however? there is a reason why parents are now being told to watch what their children play and interact with.

12 - LIES
Lies and utter bulls*** if video games influence violence then what about movies and tv, they must influence violence to if the basic concept is the same, and it is there for ENTERTAINMENT. and what about ratings, if a game is rated M any idiot should be able to tell its NOT FOR 9 YEAR OLDS!!!

13 - If Video Games influenced us all that much
Then our parents (depending on your age) would be running around in the dark looking for yellow pellets and fearing ghosts.

These studies have yet to prove anything, there is a link between violent video games for ceratin, however there is no evidence to suggest whether the player is already violent and as such plays a violent game or if the game turns a player violent. Since I've personally grown up playing games that encorage me to rip off heads and stab and/or shoot people yet I hate guns and abhor violence (I won't even watch UFC cause it's too violent) I'm gonna go with the first option, violent players pick violent games. This isn't always true of course.

Lastly, how about the parents take some responsibility in teaching your kids what is a game and what isn't? I'm thinking that's where kids "become" violent after playing games. It comes down to this, "More parents, less people with kids".

Lock up your guns. Teach your kids the difference between reality and game. Stop shifting blame to the entertainment medium. Until someone beats someone to death with a PS2 game case, I don't believe any of this BS. I've been playing games since I was 6, and I've never laid a hand on anyone except in self defense.

god hate people who link games to aggression!! if a game is an 18, then a kid shouldnt be playing it!

its exactly the same as a movie being an 18 and them watching that, no difference at all.

So why dont people make a big deal out of that instead of always blaming games.

19 - New Study
Shows that new studies about violent video games causing violence in children are utter crap. Here how's this one for ya?

Be a better parent and teach your children morals and ethics. Why you are at it how about a hug and sitting down with them at the dinner table? Oooh NO! You mean I HAVE TO TALK TO THEM!? Take them to the park and play ball or ride a bike with them too!?

Right.. right..

My brothers and sisters were not allowed to play games, not allowed to watch tv for more than an hour a day, and were forced to play outside. They enjoyed it. However, all 4 of them are druggies, all 4 of them have bad jobs and dropped out of high school, because of drugs. One of my sisters had 3 kids, one is in the 3rd grade(I think he's 7 or 8) and she's 24 or 25. My other sister was one who was allowed to do what she wanted to and had a free will. She was still a druggy, but didn't drop out of high school and is going to University of Illinois Law School.

Look at me. I'm a computer nerd who spends his days inside all day infront of a tv/computer monitor. I don't do drugs, get straight A's, still have a life. I'm not a very aggressive person(until I get mad in SOCOM or something), while with my sister with her kids, you say one wrong thing to her she'll try and fight you.

Point is, video games do nothing bad to people. I'm not saying that I'm like every gamer, but seeing 4 people who had the opposite lives of me turn out bad and me good(so far) is kinda suspicious.

That's a pretty bold claim they are making which half of the gaming population, more than likely more than half do not have aggressive tendencies anyway. OH! and would you look here it's CNN making such a claim...Can always think Main Stream Media for jumping on video games whenever they can.

I played Video games throughout my middle, highschool and even a bit now. Not violent in the least bit, in fact I believe video games are probably great stress relievers and are also good for laughs (Especially with playing with friends online, or whether they are in your own home.) All this constant hate toward video games with an "T" rating or higher is BullS*it. I bet the country (America) and perhaps a few more just feel they can jump on these games to try and get them abolished so that everything can be all rose-tinted and what not and get games that are family oriented.

30 - not true
Study can't be too true. My 6yo son plays all the violent video games including Saint's Row 2 and GTA4 and COD4. He plays them more than 13 hrs a week. In school, he has a few kids that push him around, but he doesn't do it back. He has friends that do this to him and he just lets them do it. He's not aggressive at all. Those kids that push him around, do not play violent videogames. So who's the aggressive ones?

But I worry one day when he's older, he'll be very violent and aggressive like me...not due to videogames, but following a father's behaivor.
