Ten Years of Too Human - A Retrospective

When Too Human comes out this Tuesday, it will mark the end of nearly ten years of development for one of the most beleaguered games of all time. It's in the spirit of giving the game credit for making it this far that we present you with a brief retrospective of Too Human's life, from 1999 to the present

The GI review is the only domestic one yet - expect the rest tomorrow and the day after. Though I almost would've thought IGN would have one up by now, considering their dealings with Dyack and SK.

What do you mean, still no reviews? Game Informer scored Too Human 6.75/10. Look here if you don't believe me. http://www.n4g.com/xbox360/...

1.4 - There's a review embargo
If you look around a little there's a review embargo until 2PM on the 19th for general press. IGN is rumored to have rights to do it earlier, and some other might be licensed, but that's what the deal is.

I just figured that out earlier.

This game hasn't been in development for 10 years, more like 5 or 6. It was scrapped for 2 consoles because Nintendo didn't like it, and they wanted them to work on Eternal Darkness.

Gets your fuken facts straight.

It was approved. Look at the comments lol. They failed it hours later just 'cause the quality of the scan (or picture) wasn't readable. You could see the score clearly but you can't read what they had to say about the game.

1.9 - I played the demo again yesterday.
It gets better with every play.

I only just found out about balancing on the trolls.

And my beserker got a sword that looked straight out of Final Fantasy, It was about 8 feet long and called something like The Flaming sword of badass.

And the when you use the laser guns to shoot down incoming missiles it looks spectacular.

I'm thinking like a 62 average on metacritic.

SK is not as talented as Nintendo fans have said (in the past).

sadly , the ambition of Denis Dyack was greater than what his team could accomplish , now the right thing for MS to do is to bail out , cancel the sequels and this sordid partnership with SK.

4 - i only to recently just played the demo
and if you take away that i was playing it at 2am, i have to say i enjoyed it. Its not going to be a perfect 10 because the gameplay isnt for everybody. It was a bit buggy here and there but i assume it wasnt completely finished code. But im a big fan of the looting system and will probably end up playing it many times through to get all the the rarer/stronger weapons, but as i say thats just me.

Im hoping that once u finish the game u can start it again on a harder difficulty but on the same level as u finished the last play through with all the equipment that you found, and also more powerful equipment exclusive to that harder difficulty.

Anyway ill stop going on now, but in my opinion, i would say ignore the reviews on ths one, because i have a feeling it really is one of those like or dislike games with very little middle ground.

4.1 - I'm pretty sure
you can replay any levels with your character. I don't think you can possibly max out your character without doing that. You almost certainly can't get all the good loot.

5 - It was the same for Ninja Gaiden 2.
No review or anything until the game was actually released. It's a big trend lately with games that are of so-so quality. Give SK credit though for actually having the balls to release a demo first and show everyone that this game is a epic rental at best.

Have to agree with you. Loved everything about NG2. Loved everything about the Too Human demo except for the gameplay. Not even sure if it's a rental for me but hope the Too Human fans enjoy the hell out of it.

"Scans leaked of the latest issue of Game Informer last week, and they featured a review of Too Human with the score of 6.25. Which would be above average by most rational scales, but is actually equivalent to about a 4 out of 10."

Keane Ng who wrote this needs to have his glasses(head) checked. First off it was 6.75 and secondly how is 6.75/10 equivalent to a 4/10? What is he thinking?

If you look at Game Informer's scale, a 7 = average, and a 6 = limited appeal. By any other scale, 5 = average, and if 5 = 7, then well, presumably 6 = 4.

I know most people just look at the numbers without looking into what they actually mean - ever wonder why games journalists seem to hate giving scores?

Well I played the demo, first I was really skeptic, yes the combat is repetitive but Too Human's main strength is its customization etc. & different weapons armor types etc. & this is where it gets addictive. I played the demo quite a few times and every time I got new armor types. It was fun. But will it be enough to get it through, I doubt that. The animation & character models looks really dated. There are quite a few characters on screen but again I don't know there isn't a drastic difference in enemy designs.

8 - Are we really going to see Part 2 and Part 3?
I enjoyed the Demo, though I was not BLOWN away by it. To me it appears to simply be an average game. Do I buy average games? Yes, I do. Does this game have problems with Cameras and Angles, yes it does…But so does most of the Triple A titles that come out from Square and Team Ninja. The thing that really might keep me from buying the game is this, It is supposed to be a Trilogy. Remember Advent Rising Trilogy…yeah just one game. Can you imagine Halo, just ending like it did? That would make me hesitate on buying this game. If it took 10 years for the first one to come out, are we really going to see 2 and 3? I would simply be happy with my 10 hours of game play if it just came to a suitable conclusion. Promises of a 2 and 3 game in a trilogy, mean nothing in this industry, just make your consumer happy and give them some sort of ending that doesn’t leave them wondering, that is unless you can REALLY deliver part 2 and part 3! I simply can not agree with playing this game for 10 hours, to be left with no ending, and never getting part 2 or part 3 of this trilogy.

8.1 - 10 years dev time seems to be a very common misconception.
i wudnt worry about it my friend, the 360 final version of the game only had about 2 1/2 years. The rest of the decade was spend going through different concepts. From what i can gather, the original game concept for the ps1 isnt much like the final piece.

Add in the ease of use of the 360 for devs and i reckon theres a good chance all 3 will be this gen, mainly becus of how they have said u can use your save file from the previous installments in 2 and 3 to get your level upto 150. Given that fact, i would say for about 90% sure 2 and 3 wont be too far behind.

Too Human has only been in its current Norse form since 2005.

Maybe if you read the article you'd see how incredibly different a game it was back in 1999 for the PS1 and then later (Roman overtones and all) on the Gamecube.

The only absolute similarity between 1999 and 2008 is the name, the rest is an entirely fresh beast. :)

*chuckle*

Gears of War 2 and Fable 2 say hi! ;D

I think you are wrong, and your points are pure speculation, on your behalf. And the way you refer to the console war says a lot about your little comment, maybe you should consider different zones to comment in?

Even if this game fails abysmally, 360 and Ps3 have a few years ahead of them, which is good for all of us. I'm sure you hope that this game will be the final blow for MS, like a true ****** would, but that fact of the matter is that, at the current rate, Sony and MS are doing very well and will be competing and providing us quality games from both sides for many years to come.

10 - Played the demo and...
Was not impressed. I think what set me up for disappointment was the idea that some folks claimed it to be a Diablo clone for consoles. It was ok but it sure was nothing int he same category as Diablo. The whole game (demo) was "ok" at best and perhaps worth a rental but in no way worth 60 bucks.

the GI review was kinda lame. they gave the game an average score b/c they felt it was too hard and they died so many times (didnt like sitting thru the assention scene). WTF! Also they say they didn't like that only the bioengineer has healing ability...again too hard. Don't gamers want a challenge? Lastly they think the story is bland. Personally I think as story of futuristic viking mythology is badass. I kinda feel after reading the review that they didn't really play the full game, although they did like the graphics, gameplay, customization level. I just replayed the demo last night and after an epic troll battle, I cannot wait til TOOsday! To each is own tho.
