Console Codenames: Before They Were Famous

What's in a name? Everything. Products live and die by their catchy or unique titles, and children, oh man are they in for a tough life if they're hastily named Richard Long or Nancy Weiner. Obviously the same goes for game consoles, which go through several stages of mock ups and codenames before they ever earn the right to sit next to Big Mouth Billy Bass on a Wal-Mart shelf.

Some of these you may know, others you may not. Just be glad the R&D department doesn't have final say.

1 - The Sega Katana.
I think that has a little more "OOMPH" to it than the Sega Dreamcast. I think they should have stuck with that.

MARZ?
No, since Microsoft decided to drop support for it for Xenon.

I used to love that name. By the way, is the new XBOX codenamed Phoenix? I tell ya what, If Sony doesn't get their act together soon I may have to buy into that if it comes next year (Christmas obviously).

Too soon for a next console. Still, what are they suggesting with phoenix? That they are dead but going to rise again? Interesting...

Personally, I thought the name "Ultra 64" was awesome. I don't know why Nintendo changed the name of their system to "Nintendo 64."

I remember seeing Killer Instinct and Cruis n' USA in the arcades with the "Ultra 64" logo in their intros back in the day.

Oh wow. Nah I don't think I remember hearing about that. Crazyness! I do remember however, EGM saying something about SGI and Nintendo in a news story at the time...that must have been it.

I still liked the name Ultra 64!

I didn't know that the codenames were listed on the back of the game's boxes/cases. I didn't believe it for myself, so I checked my Mario Kart Wii case, and wouldn't you know it, there was RVL staring back at me.
