Fighting Games for Dummies

Jaleel Boone of XboxFocus.com writes:

"With the release of Soul Calibur IV, recently I've noticed a lot of people saying "I want to get into them, but I just don't get fighting games." As always I'm here for you; so feast your eyes on my beginner's guide to various fighting games. I didn't include Guilty Gears and King of Fighters because no one gives a fuck. Enjoy!"

Virtua Fighter is better than Tekken. I don't care what you say.

It actually depends on what's your taste because Virtua Fighter is more realistic than Tekken. Virtual Fighter tries to stay grounded in reality while Tekken has an anime exaggeration to it. I agree with you that Virtual Fighter is better because I love simulators over arcade games. Simulators usually have more complex elements but since we’re talking about fighting games it’s kind of hard to tell.

Street Fighter is a good example it has the anime exaggeration feel to it yet there is still a lot to be learned. If UFC 2009: Undisputed is done right I would say that game will be on my top fighting games than boxing.

1.2 - TEKKEN RULES!
Virtual Fighter still can't catch up with the world's best 3D fighter.

I really prefer Soul Calibur, but I have to say, EVERY fighting game has the one huge flaw.... You can keep attacking faster than they can get back up, which opens the whole "you play like a dirty whore" argument and ruins friendships

It's his opinion mate. Just because he doesn't like a certain thing doesn't mean he doesn't know anything about it.

Not a bad article, fighters are getting a lot more technical these days and with tastes so diverse it's difficult to speak to all types of fans.

Hmmm... Well, I don't play Tekken I know it does take some skill. Virtua Fighter while I really don't like this one. It still takes skill. And we all know SF takes skill.

I don't find DoA to be a complete button masher. Its just so fast it is hard to take advantage of the counter system.

And why was Guilty Gear not on that list?

Dude if you're a fan or a true hardcore fighting gamer than you give a F*CK about Guilty Gears and King of Fighters. These are some of the most used games in fighting game tournaments. Guilty Gear has been a big favorite in EVO tournaments which is one of if not the biggest fighting game tournament. They are as techincal and hard to master as most 3d fighting games especially the later versions like KOFXI and GGAC. Unlike a couple 3d games out there they don't reward button smashing (i.e. Eddie/Christie from Tekken, damn button smashers are so annoying when they use them and act like they're good and doing every thing on purpose) and they aren't as broken as some games (i.e. Soul Calibur 3 and F'n Yoda from SC4, seriously even if he is short how can Yoda not grab Yoda). KOF and GG are just as awesome as any other fighting game out there and the only reason they don't get much hype and media exposure is because they get made by smaller companies. Go to places like Japan and Brazil who are actually quite found of KOF and they'll show you who gives a F*CK.

7 - <<<<2D fighter
3D fighting has always been "tricky" i mean from the side stepping/grappling cheat/low sweep they tend to be button mashers IMO.

STREETFIGHTER4 and BLAZBLUE for me!

I love these guys articles so funny yet grounded in truth. I agree with the article for the most part except i don't have an opinion on Tekken or VF. I've never played a VF and i haven't played Tekken since that bastard Eddie showed up in 3. My favorite fighter currently though is SF3 (don't have SC4 yet) and my 2nd favorite franchise is Soul Calibur. Guilty Gear is another good fighter but i don't play it much along with KoF and Rival Schools used to be good back in the day as well. I don't like DoA at all i have DoA2 for the dreamcast and i never liked it.

I must say that whoever wrote this article, doesn't know fighters or doesn't play them. Either way, horrible article.

Soul Calibur IV got me a few achievements and a broken controller. F*cking Secret Apprentice and your cheap moves!!

Ok I didn’t break my controller, I almost though. Besides the overpowered Secret Apprentice the game is fun.

15.1 - Ha! Hillarious!!!
Funny comment, man. But seriously, I think Soul Calibur is the best 3D fighting game out. I've played them all. Virtua Fighter is so technical it's boring. Tekken is alright, but doesn't hold my interest for very long. DOA is good, but seems mashy to me. Soul Calibur is perfect if you ask me, it's fun and challenging and I've played every iteration of the series, so it must be alright.

As far as 2D fighters go, I like Guilty Gear but I'm no good at it. It is pretty though. Can't wait for Street Fighter 4.
