Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes Becomes Rare

Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes has gone from a $20 game six months ago to a $55 game. Prices have increased every month for the last six months and a sealed copy can sell for $125. Why did the price increase so much?

I heard this game was a pretty poor remake, with different voice actors and cut scenes. Guess that was coming from hardcore MGS fans though who dont like change. I always wanted to play it.

yeah Panthers the remake was pretty crappy with all this too over the top "the matrix" cut-scenes and kojima didn't even worked on the game...

SK did the remake, and I don't think Kojima had any part in it (besides making MGS 1 hahaha). I have the game, but due to the fact I let some friends borrow it, it's a bit scratched. Still works, but.. yeah. Anyway, it was definitely over the top (the cutscenes). For example, in one cutscene Snake literally jumps on a missile that Liquid shoots at him from a chopper...

Not to say these scenes aren't badas$ but still. Also the voice acting was redone as was the music. Unfortunately both were not as good as in the original (in my opinion). The voice actors were the same, I had thought.

The last complaint I had with the game is that it put in 1st person mode (Hear me out). For MGS2-4 this is fine, the AI is built to deal with it as are the levels. For MGS1, this is not so. The AI is as weak as ever and the levels are compact. You can shoot everyone with a silenced socom and never be stopped.

In the end I enjoyed this game, but the experience of the original MGS was far better.

On topic: I agree that this game is obviously selling out because of the MGS4 fanbase / experience.

I only liked two things about Twin Snakes: the graphics, and the fact that each boss had their own theme, as opposed to sharing just one. Everything else about the game though, including the crappy voice actors, turning Solid Snake into Neo from The Matrix, and the soundtrack being ruined, I didn't like.

I once owned this for cheap, when I was collecting my gamecube titles that I felt I'd play long into the future.

I ended up trading it back in for a 360 ultimately, but it's still a great gamecube title, even if you have a Wii.

Honestly, there's not much selection for the hardcore gamer on the Wii, so anyone who didn't play the dozen or so really great titles should pick it up. And Eternal Darkness.

Also, the reason it's so rare now is because it did not sell all that well after it's initial release, as we see often times with things that become Collector's Edition titles. It wasn't produced in near the quantity of titles like GTA or something, as the author mentions. This is more like ICO. I once traded in a sealed copy of ICO to Gamestop for 360 credit. I felt like a tool, but was extremely, extremely lazy.

Anyway, there you have it. And the game is pretty much a rental unless you really like MGS.

Forgot to add that Link was a great addition to Soul Calibur II (and the developers really made it work great on the gamecube controller), making it easily the best version of SCII, if you can't get your hands on SCIV. I felt that the third iteration on PS2 was very skippable after SCII.

I would have a hard enough time playing an older MG after playing MGS4, let alone paying nearly the same price for it.

6.1 - While your opinion is certainly valid,
If you have any hankering for the original PlayStation or PC MGS, please reconsider and get the Twin Snakes version. It adds some extra cinematics and stuff in addition to incorporating a lot of the gameplay mechanics from MGS2.

Like the octagonal edge to the joysticks?

Cuz that's the only thing that pisses me off. And it's really small and Dualshock-ish in it's lack of something to hold.

The game is somewhat broken. FPS makes it way easier.

Not to mention those cutscenes they added are cheesy as hell, even for an MGS game.

8.3 - because jumping on a rocket and firing off another rocket is 'unrealistic'.
I learn to just 'go with it'. As a heavy fan of the PS1 MGS, it just adds to the 'coolness' factor of Solid Snake. The Voice Acting in MGS:TT is unbearable for me though; I'm just too used to the PS1 MGS where everyone emotes more than usual. Example: Grey Fox. (will try to compensate)

Grey Fox PS1: because I'M the ONE who KILLED her "PARENTS"! *raspy-like voice*

Grey Fox GC: because I'm the one who killed her parents. *monotone, no raspy voice*.

I liked the PS1 version because I feel it depicts Grey Fox more cyborg like and dying-like. Also, it's pronounced RES-"PITE". not respit all rolled in one word. Yah, I'm very opinionated.

9 - i remember
this game went from 24.99 to 17.99, then right back to 24.99. when i realized the price change, i had a feeling that this game was going to become rare. game was pretty hard to find at the time i bought it because gamestop would usually carry only one used copy. the game is usually gone by the next day, so i bought it on the day i saw it without hesitating. i only spent 7 dollars on the game cause i happen to return one of the games i didn't like.

What made the original MGS so good was its music but konami used totallly different music in the twin snakes and ruined it. Other gamecube games that sell for high prices are Pikmin 2 & Tales of Symphonia.

15 - I still have it with no intention of selling it..
I think people are exaggerating how bad the voices and cut scenes are.
The only different voices are Gray Fox, Noami (lost her british accent), and Mei Ling (sounds too american now). Oh and Raven sounds a bit different. Unless you are a huge fan of the original you wont care or notice.
And there are about 2 cut scenes that are too hollywood.
I do agree that the MGS2 game mechanics make the game a lot easeir then the og version. Just play it on harder levels.
I still recommend it to anybody that like Metal Gear games. Its much easier to get into then the original version which has aged a lot.

I started playing through the Metal Gear Solid series before starting on MGS4, glad I still have my copy of MGS:TS and didn't have to buy it again.
Did price comparisons a last week and noticed this game was getting some "rarity pricing" on eBay which was surprising, but at the same time it wasn't, only because I hardly saw this game up on the shelves in the first place.

18 - This is the ONLY game I have ever sold
I have a very large game collection and I disliked this one so much I sold it about a year ago for $25, which was $15 more than I payed for it. I am sure the price will stabilize in a few months when MGS4 hype has died down. Previous series entries always shoot up in price around a new ones launch.

19 - Great game, bad controls
The GC did'nt have a select button.
Codec = select

Also, the old MGS standard (PS ver.) o for input instead of x
So i ended up buying one of those adaptors to use a PS controller on the Cube just for Twin Snakes.

The redone Grey Fox vs. Rex is one of the greatest scenes in video games. Matrix who?

20 - Wow...I have a copy...
I bought it used at blockbuster for $12.99 a couple of years ago. I haven't finished it yet - got frustrated with the controls...etc.

I just started MGS4 on Tuesday - finally broke down and bought me a PS3 - and it controls much better than the older Metal Gear games.

I doubt I'll sell it. I'm sure my GC will survive a nuclear blast - I'll finish it eventually, and I am somewhat of a collector of games and only sell/trade them very rarely.

21 - I just love this game
People complaining about FPS making the game too easy, just don't use it and thats it. Its not the game's fault that MGS1 for PS1 was made in a design not for FPS. If you want to play like PS1 version, don't use FPS, don't use the MGS2 moves, just use MGS1 PS1 moves and be happy.

And who is calling those scenes over the top? did any of you saw the ninja in MGS4? or Lady Luck in MGS2? or Vamp? or Big Boss reviving 2-3 times, if thats not over the top, then what is? MGS series have never tried to be overly realistic, in fact, I have always looked at MGS series in a animeish way.

And I think Konami thinks of it that way too, just see MGS Portable Ops for PSP, the cutscenes and stuff are all made in an anime way, same thing in the codec screen, the game is clearly meant to be like that.

23 - I seem to have decent luck lately with the rare ones
I recently re-bought my copy of MGS:TS from a Movie Gallery store here in northern IL straight off the shelf for a steal at 14.99 (two weeks ago).

I saw it sitting there and decided to ask the store manager if it was possible to sell it to me, considering it was still on the rental shelf and not the sale basket. I was informed that a lot of rental places are more than willing to sell their rental games (especially for a discontinued system) if you simply ask. And much to my shock it was only $15, so I snatched it up and it will not be leaving my collection anytime soon.

I also happened to find a copy of Shin megami Tensei: Nocturne at my local Game Crazy for $13.49 instead of GameSlop's $59.99. You see, GameStop bases their used prices on sites like this. They catch an upward trend, and the price of that game you were eyeing suddenly goes from $9.99 to $39.99 (yes, I've seen spikes like that).

My best advice to rare game collectors is to avoid GameSlop at ALL COSTS. Game Crazy (usually found in Hollywood Videos stores) tends to be a little behind in catching game price trends, so they're a reliable outlet for cheap deals of very rare games. There's also the Flea Market and Garage Sale route. A few months back I found a pile of PS1 games at a garage sale for a buck a piece. I snatched up the whole lot (30 games), and much to my surprise I found Silent Hill 1, The very rare PS1 Doom, and a few others. And the next best place is video rental stores (aside from Blockbuster). With rental stores, try to avoid the HUGE franchise ones, because they usually have a strict policy on selling games (that and the fat kid behind the counter usually has dibs on any rare piece of game in the store).

Try to find the Mom and Pop rental stores around your area, and go hunting, because they're always willing to sell a rare gem for cheap (especially if it hasn't been rented in a few months or so.)

26 - THE TWIN SNAKES
This game was the main reason I bought GC, oh and Def Jam Fight for NY but the price has risen prolly because of the success and die-hard fans of MGS4, plus, it took me a good month just find the basic re-make for MGS1 on the GC.

Damn good game, DAMN, good game :) (One of my Favs, next to FFVII)
