Ninteno announces New 'Core Titles' for E3 2008

"We recently announced the upcoming release of Mario Super Sluggers," said Marc Franklin, director of public relations at Nintendo, when asked by GamePro on Friday which upcoming Wii titles core gamers should be excited for. "Additionally, we will be announcing several new titles that core gamers will be interested in around the time of E3."

1 - Core gamers? Um they've hit a few bumps in the road.
But how much more deeper can they reach more audiences?
2 - Longtime franchises maybe given a break?
(*note Metroid official site has gone offline?)
3 - Actual surprises that deliver this year?

If they announce some other pile of crap like WiiFit at E3, then nintendo really deserves to die...

[sarcasm]
Maybe they'll announce WiiSh!t, and the controller is a toilet, and the "game" teaches you how to take a sh!t. [/sarcasm]

"The clear majority of people waiting in line outside retailers on Sunday mornings to buy their Wii consoles are core gamers," maintains Franklin.

Well, we all knew that Wii's "Core" gamers are different to the Gamecubes "Core" gamers.

It's a shame Franklin is calling the casual demographic Nintendo's "Core" now. And he makes no reference to the old fans who bought Nintendo consoles through the hard Gamecube years.
Still I suppose they are in the money making business.

So "Core titles" are going to be things like Wii Fit, balance board type peripherals?

The people who supported nintendo during the playstation area were the "so-casual", it's essentially thanks to the selling of Pokemon (gameboy)
that nintendo survive and because they don't sell their console at loss like the others.
Of course they have a loyal fanbase but it tend to reduce with time.

Hmmm

Mario Workout?
Virtual Budgie?
Make up advisor?

Nintendo must know where they are making their money from, and there's absoluterly no chance that they will shift their market focus back to us old school gamers.
Their may be one or two titles that will appeal to us, but they will tidbits thrown from the table of scraps, while the focus remains on the mass market..

@ jtucker78 you think casual gamers sit outside for a game console?

So I guess Wii Fit must be pretty hardcore. There were a few queues for that.

Did you know, people also queued for Tickle me Elmo?

I just hope that they'll anounce new ip or a new zelda.
We have already see new games with fresh ideas thanks to the wii, but i hope like with the ds, more concepts will be tested.
The wii is a new ground that developpers have not yet apprehend.

Yeah ok like ur ever right Nintendo does have a good future ahead of it if theykeep doing what they are doing. What it is they are doing its works, why do are they the #1 selling game system this generation? and why selling 10 million huh?, think about that one

"why do are they the #1 selling game system this generation? and why selling 10 million huh?, think about that one "

Because they are appealing to the mass market and not gamers at all.

Focus on the Fatal Frames, Tenchu and anything other then Mario/Wii Fit/Gimmick and I'll be on board.

Until then all of the moms and dads are buying this system for little Jimmy and Sue for their Birthdays. I'm not saying they are the only ones buying the Wii but from what I've seen so far Ninty is going in the wrong direction with gaming. IMO

titntin Nintendo itself besides wii fit hasnt really made a real casual game for the mass market, atleast for the wii.I mean yea mario kart was alittle more casual then hardcore but besides that i really never actually see Nintendo bringing out the bad titles. Its the third parties who are making the shovelware.

I'm afraid you're getting you're definitions wrong, Minty.

Nintendo Wii's "Core" are not the same as the Gamecubes "Core".

The core has changed. Read the article ... and Franklin's comment:
"The clear majority of people waiting in line outside retailers on Sunday mornings to buy their Wii consoles are core gamers," maintains Franklin.
Ever remember people queuing up outside shops to buy Gamecubes?
No?
Me either, because there were far less Gamecube owners. So who are all these new people queuing up for Nintendo Wii's? According to Franklin they are the Core. The new casual audience is the core.

Most of the games you've listed are not Nintendo's "Core".

Core is Wii Fit, Brain Training, Nintendogs, Wii Sports, Wii Kart.
Zelda is old school Nintendo. The "Core" gamer want Wii Fit.

Although I think your list looks far better than core rubbish, I'm afraid it isn't core.

Jtucker, man you are clueless and dense. Not every person that bought a Wii is brand new to gaming. Just because you are a fanboy and only buy Sony doesnt mean the rest of the world works that way. More likely those Wii buyers were were former PS2 owners, GC owners or xbox owners. Core games are games like Mario Galaxies, Metroid, Zelda, Resident Evil, and those games have no problem selling on Wii. You are trying to spin what was said to fit your needs knowing full well that is not what they meant when they talked about core titles.

13.3 - Have to disagree with jtucker78
The term core gamer was tied closely to Super Mario Sluggers, which means that in this context core gamer does mean "hardcore player".

Semantics aside, it's clear that there are several unannounced "hardcore" games under development for Wii by Nintendo. Factor 5, Retro Studios, EAD Tokyo and many other studios haven't revealed what they are developing for the Wii at the moment.

VoiceofReason - I have also owned a NES, SNES, N64, GC and a Wii.
And I have never owned a PS2.
I only jumped to PS3 after I'd owned a Wii for 9 months.
Yes, I like Sony now and although I don't like the Wii I am still a massive Zelda and Mario fanboy.

My argument was that Franklin says that all those people queuing up are core gamers.
I am merely pointing out that there mysteriously seem to be loads of "Core" gamers flocking to buy Wiis.
I guess the "casual croud" is just a myth.

Trust me ... if there is a new Zelda announced at E3 I'll be one of the first in line when it eventually comes out.
And I am excited to see news on Conduit and Mad World.
I just think Franklin is naive to look at those queues and think they are all core Nintendo. Don't you agree?

14 - the wii is also hardcore not only for casual gamers
there is coming a few games in the future for the wii that got potential and that appeals to us "hardcore" gamers.
Mad World, The Conduit, monster hunter 3, skate it, spore, fatal frame, disaster day of crisis, sadness and probably more that has not been announced yet. so i think the wii console got a bright future. Developers didnt expect the wii to sell as much as it has so they didnt pay as much attention to the wii as they did with ps3 and xbox360. But this is hopefully changing.

ok. the core gamers for the wii are casual gamers. But hopefully more hardcore gamers will buy the wii because of the great hardcore titles (listed above)coming out for the wii. But again gamers these days that are hardcore (or so they say)seems to be so into the graphics that maybe they cant see how brilliant the wii is regarding gameplay. Only time will tell.

I hope the Wii gets more Decent Devs making decent hardcore games and not poor PS2 ports.

Mad World and The Conduit look promising.

I've got my fingers crossed for a Retro Studios Online offering.

They realize that Wii is the current platform of choice in this generation, and their bottom lines depend on appealing to the largest base."

thats what Frank said and its so true, no one thought it would happen but it did. Lets hope Nintendo goes for the core gamers and games like Zelda and Pikmen, Fatal frame and that because they will get a bigger audience if they do and Nintendo will dish out some great stuff for casual gamers alike too.

16 - to all fanboys out there (including Nintendo ones)
I've noticed that nintendo and sony switched roles this generation, last gen, sony had the PS2 and while it had some great titles it had tons of shovelware and was cheap and had a casual market(not saying it was completely casual) and you had the gamecube, which was undersold and underrated (and no matter what fanboy you are you must agree, the PS3 was very underrated) But now it's switched, I don't know if that's good or not, oh and this article was posted weeks ago, and I have no clue why someone thought it was new, probably just wanted points seeing as the title is Nintendo ANNOUNCES new core titles it should be Nintendo WILL announce new core titles AT E3

Ill agree madworld and the conduit look great........and i think these two games are going to really push what a third party can do,which in turn other third parties might step up and do the same.Unfortunately third parties are seeing the casual market as such a profit building success that they really dont put effort into their games and i think that is hurting the wii's reputation.

and i would rather have a new starfox or f-zero then more casual trash that doesnt appeal to me.

19 - Just as I thought when I read the title...
Mario, Mario, Mario.

Can Nintendo do ANYTHING without Mario?

I mean seriously, it's been how many years now and Mario and the gang are still in 85% of their games.

There was a report a couple days ago that Miyamoto dissed Sega by telling his people not to make games look like Sega games. But what I REALLY think he's been telling his people is to just smack Mario on there and call it a day.

It's a shame because when they DO come out with something truly original, it makes MAD LOOT for them. Then they drop it for more Mario (and oh yeah, Pokemon for the DS)

I would say that Nintendo has run Mario and Pokemon into the ground, but I honestly don't think there could be any more ground for them to be run through.
