Six Year Old Gets GameCube as First Prize

Perth's St John's Shopping Centre recently ran a competition called "Young Jones and the Temple of Lost Treasures" which saw local kiddies chasing around the place getting high street brands seared into their brains... whoops... looking for treasure.

See, loosely tied into the Indiana Jones movie of late.

The winner - according to the shopping centre - was "Young Jamie McNair, 6, from Auchterarder" - crazy name, crazy town. Anyway, fresh-faced young Jamie saw his name "pulled out of the hat by his namesake, and St John's Shopping Centre's Administrator, Jamie Nie!" No freaking way?!

And his prize... "The prize, a Nintendo Gamecube, was won after Jamie completed his treasure hunt entry for Indy's lost items, which were hidden inside retailer windows in the St John's Shopping Centre."

There should be a law against that. Isn't that considered cruelty giving a hunk of junk to a six year old as a prize?

Ha ha! The Gamecube has been dead for so long I almost forgot about the poor thing. They should have at least gave him a PS2 or a Wii at least.

Gamecubes currently sell at GS and EB for $30. Half of their games are more expensive than the system:

SSBM: $35
Zelda Twilight Princess: $45
Resident Evils 2 and 3: $45 each
and many others.

Wow, talk about a slap in the face. I mean, I know he's six and all, it sounded like they were from either UK or Australia, but nevertheless give the poor kid a Wii at least for his efforts.

Sorry, my bad Fanboy Slaughter - the shopping centre is in Scotland not Western Australia.

Gamecube is a great little system, just hook the kid up with Ocarina of time, and see if he beats it before he's 10.

14 - Funny article
This is a great article, I mean it is so bad it somehow became good to read. This may have happened because the person who took care of the prizes didn't know about videogame consoles and the present market. So they found an cheap Nintendo console and thought it was OK?

I say a gamecube is a very good prize for a kid, the games are sold cheap in stores, there's a lot of variety and the console is really easy to work with for a 6-year old.

Well said master fred. Maybe PSN AND XBL should disable voice functions for child accounts. My buddy Evan locks up kiddie accounts all the time at work. He'll warn them, asking them to tone down or he'll suspend them for 3 days. They NEVER learn. lol.

Even a PSP would have been better than an outdated Gamecube.

17 - Lame prize...
You can get a Gamecube nowadays for like 30 dollars... If they want to give the kid a last gen console, they should just give him a PS2 or an Xbox. They must have spent their budget on the event, with little left over for the prizes.

Reminds me of my friend who sold his ps2 to buy a gamecube. That exchange took place this year after he sold his 360 to buy a used off-brand guitar which fell apart 2 weeks ago.
