it goes

1) Snes - Greatest games in all genres
2) Nes - Saved gaming and created the modern game(SM3)
3) PS2 - Sold the most ever - however it was out classed by the xbox. Can't be the best when you competitor does everything better han you.
4) N64 - Ahead of the PSx because it had great single player and multiplayer games. Think I'm wrong? Name a great multiplayer Psx game?

This list is an instant fail!!!

Add to that the fact that the Dreamcast ranks higher than the PS2, the best-selling console of all time (which clearly stands for something), and that officially solidifies this list as a MEGA Failure!

Oh yeah, and the xbox 360 controller is not the best controller of all time. Maybe for FPS, but not as an all-purpose controller like the DualShock.

Really kevincox,

Although I love my PS3 and am considered by some to be a Sony fanboy, I don't think PS3 deserves a spot on that list yet. I think PS2 should be #1, and I don't think the 360 should be anywhere in the top 8. And I also wouldn't put systems that were known for only three or four games (even if they are amazing) like N64 and Gamecube. But I guess a diverse library is more important to me than a few killer apps.

First off the generation isn't even over yet. The 360 could very well be one of the worst systems ever created by the end of this generation. Gamedaily loses all credibility for even having the Dreamcast, Gamecube, and the 360 on the list. I'm never ever going to take them seriously again. They're just a bunch of moneyhats.

This should be the true list that everyone should abide by:
1. PS2
2. PS1
3. DS
4. NES
5. SNES

And you have to consider what the system did for the industry. You can't simply say which system has the better game library. And with my top 3 the PS2, PS1, and DS all those systems hit both the casual and hardcore market equally.

to be fair mikeslemonade its very debatable which console had the most important impact in the gaming industry.

NES brought the gaming industry back from the dead
SNES made gaming here to stay
PS1 made gaming not just for kids*
PS2 is the most successful gaming system to date

These are just my opinion of some of the big factors that these systems did to help grow the industry. Obviously their are many more things they did but the point is they all did so much big things its hard to say which one was the most important.

they all played a very BIG role to create gaming where it is today

*(though I'm not saying only kids only played nintendo systems im just saying compared to playstation it was geared way more towards a younger audience while playstation specifically was aiming towards teenagers)

I would talk about the gameboy or other handhelds but the 1st and only handle i owned is the psp and thats because as a kid my parents were to poor to buy me them but I know they did very important things for the gaming industry too I just dont have enough 1st hand knowledge to comment on them

Why would Gamedaily do that? It doesn't make any sense. At least half the Media Nextgen, Gamepro, Gamerevolver, are all Sony fans and heck I used to think Gamedaily was always neutral. Really just shocking.

I agree, the playstation brand has been as influential as nintendo in some ways in the gaming industry.

some old people refer to game systems as playstation, much like how everyone back in the day used to refer to playing games as "playing nintendo."

i will agree with you on that. As of right now 360 is the best console though debatable i have to say overall features are unmatched at this point. Edges out on the most important point which are games and majority of games still look better on 360. However 360 is not even close to achieving the title of best game console of all time. IT needs a minimum of 6yrs in the market to achieve this. Dreamcast was GIANT NONSENSE that sega dropped after ps2 Owned it.

Unfortunately i really at this point cannot see the 360 maintaining the title of best console for long. PS3 is coming out with home, better exclusives and with in game xmb they should pretty much have every feature 360 has in a little bit. Plus ps3 games are still getting better and as of right now i still believe 360 peaked with gears of war 1 and will get a slight nudge with 2. Msoft is definetly looking to replace that console in the next 3yrs because it simply isn't future proof.

I agree, even as a strong 360 supporter it is not the #1 all-time console. It is good and I would say the best game console right now but even I would say that the NES and PS2 have the history to fight it out for #1.

Still, just goes to show you that the opinions on N4G are that of the minority. The mainstream has really taken a liking to the 360 in particular North America.

"Of all time" is hard to quantify.

If one were to assume that the consoles of a newer generation are inherently better than older consoles, then it would be easy to say that yes, the 360 is better than the NES, SNES, PS2, etc. Of course it is; it's newer and was built on the shoulders of those consoles. It learned from the mistakes and added to the successes. Add to that logic that the 360 is the best console of the current generation, and one could make the argument that it must therefore be the best console 'of all time'.

However...

Comparing consoles across the generations is a silly game of opinion based on little else than personal experiences. What makes a console great? Lots of sales? Great franchises? The controller? The add-ons? Opinions, opinions, opinions. They mean nothing.

I know ahaha! I mean, what does the Xbox 360 have? Sure, it has double the sales of the PS3, sure, it wins all the game awards and gets the best game reviews for its exclusives and multiplatforms.

Sure, the attach rates are higher. And the Xbox LIVE has a lot more featuers than PSN. But, like, so what eh? So what if the machine comes with rumble controllers.

Does the Xbox 360 have teh CELL like the PSTriple? NO!

ask any normal group of people what their favorite system of all time was...and it will most likely be either an SNES, a PS1, or a PS2...

this list is absolute trash...for one thing...it attempts to use the actual games as the grounds for how good the system is..ok, thats fine...on that level the 360 should be on the list...but they don't stay consistant with that...The DC was an excellent system in terms of innovation, but that is not what this was focusing on...it got a handful of decent games and then died in about 2 years...that hardly makes it a top 10 console of all time...and how exactly does that land it a spot higher on the list than the competitive system of that generation that absolutely wrecked it?

now if they are focusing on innovation and things like that, then the 360 shouldn't be on the list...at all...the list should of had the original Xbox instead, which was the first gaming console to have a standard HDD (I think anyway, can't remember if any of those crazy 3DO/CD-I's or whatever had one)...on that level the Wii and DC should be riding at the top of that list...and the PS3 should have at least made the cut (there is no arguing that the thing is packed full of state of the art stuff)...

its just a trap to get hits...doesn't matter...Its kind of funny how the 360 can manage to show up on some websites worst console ever lists...and be number 1 on somebody elses...w/e...

PS1 too I would imagine...that is probably my overall favorite, from a games standpoint...

I still have yet to be shocked like I was when seeing the transition from SNES psuedo-3D sprite stuff to full blown 3D rendering when the PS1 launched...the difference between those 2 generations was the biggest in gaming history...

controllers are more subjective than any other thing in the industry...some systems did have very bad controllers imo (omg the first wave of 'eggs' for the Xbox 1)...but my favorite is still the analog equipped PS controllers...just feels natural to me, because I have been using one for almost half of my life...

I still feel that the N64 controller had one of the best sticks ever too...the thin stem made it have a whole lot of freedom compared to the modern ball-and-post type thing the PS and 360 controllers have now...

i never used the GC controller a whole lot...just for mariokart and melee at parties...never had a problem with it, but didn't get to use it very much...

but everyone needs to realize that saying 'the best controller in history' has zero credibility...there is no way to say that...everyone is different...I personally dislike the 360's offset sticks, just like some people dislike the PS controllers symmetrical sticks...I will say that the 360 controller is light years ahead of either available for the first Xbox...but is hardly the hands down best pad ever...

I would agree about the GC controller if it had a fourth shoulder button and a better d-pad. That thing was nigh-on unuseable.
My favourite controller ever is probably the DS3. It's incredibly flexible, has full analogue buttons which are all easy to press and accessible and is easy to hold. Plus, it's wireless :D. And the motion sensing in games can be used very very well indeed. See Ratchet and Clank and Folklore.

make innovation take a back seat to whatever their argument is on why it offers zero innovation...offer less value than its predecessor...cut corners left and right to destroy reliability in order to be rushed to the market...Overhype a decent game lineup as the best in history, yet still get outsold by all competition for the year...
