TGS 2009: Quantum Theory Update

Last time we saw Quantum Theory was at E3 2009, and the game was so early as to not even be playable. Now with this gothic 3rd person shooter at about the 50% point in development, Tecmo allowed us to go hands on before granting us an interview with Director Makoto Shibata. The playthrough helped us come up with a number of questions about the game, as did you readers. Here are the answers, as translated by Localization Producer Peter Garza:

QT is one of those games that people want to dislike. Whether it's the Gears comparisons or ragging on the stupidly named meathead main char and I've never quite got why people want it, or seem to want it, to fail so badly.

There's more to the combat than I imagined already and as it's only half done there's plenty of room for more improvement and all the while those enviroments are looking better and better. With some of the promised texture improvements it might look much better by the time we get a release out of them(though Q1 is VERY optimistic, IMO). Dissapointingly splitscreen is left out(again!)but if they only look at two online modes they might as well not bother at all-I realise this shooter thing is a new effort for Tecmo but, still, they need a LOT more than a TDM and DM variant in todays market.

Still, much more promising than some of the post TGS reports led me to feel it would look right now(though understandably if people were comaring this to a finished Gears, as seems the fashion, it WOULD seem a little unpolished atm wouldn't it?)and , given polish, better enemy AI and, importantly, some better online modes(and more really) it could surprise people. It'll have a different play style to western shooters in some ways(bound to) so we don't know how exactly it's going to tyrn out just yet so I'd not write it off just yet.

Better to have lower expectations and be pleasantly shocked than go the "Haze" route anyway. I do feel, however, that a lot of people just saw it the first time, dism, issed it as a Gears clone and decided to hate on it without giving it a real chance. Besides there is no real TPS exclusive to the PS3 so there could be a decent market for the game if it's half decent.

1.2 - Without COOP Offline/Online
This game wont do well. The ONLY reason Gears did well was because of its COOP. If it was a completely single player game with some online DM, it would of been a fail.

It's got potential, hopefully it gets a good Co-op mode.

Probably the worst thing i've seen so far about this game is the main character, he's ugly as hell, i know you're trying to make a game similar to gears but did you have to copy how ugly the main dude is? i don't want a pretty boy, but i don't want someone that needs a mosaic to cover their face!

1- the days of Gears have gone
2- PS3 dosen't need such a crap game
3- with games like MGS4,Kz2, UC2, DS , HR, GoW3, GT5 ...etc this game wont stand a chance (as of what I've seen till now)

i wish they did something totally different ,,, but i'll be looking into it, as itz only 50% is done, lets see how it will shape

Caffo-Uncharted is not the same kind of thing really. Multiplayer apart the second game has shifted, apparently, more into a puzzle/shooting mix than the first game was.

It's not a TPS in the Gears, Red Faction Guerilla mode, is it? MGS4 obviously is a third person game AND more of a shooter than before but is it a true action game? No, I'm talking about games which stand or fall by their shooting alone-like Gears or Call of Juarez, RDR etc.

Uncharted has platforming elements and a TR vibe more than anyhing resembling QT or Gears. Would you call Tomb Raiser a TPS? I wouldn't and woyuldn't call Unchared a pure shooter either. Yes, there's a lot of shooting but you know exactly what I meant-don't be pedantic you swine!

If i game is in third person and you shoot alot id call it a third person shooter. At the very least the multiplayer for Uc2 could be considered a TPS because thats exactly what it is. The SP for uncharted i would consider an action/adventure TPS but non-the-less its still a TPS.

ONTOPIC: I think im one of the few who are actually wanting to really play Quantum, i guess its just the whole idea of the game. Since I havent played it i dont know how its gonna work out but at the very least itll be a rent or borrow for me.

Uncharted 2 is one of those games where you cant qualify it as a single type of game. It's a cinematic action adventuring platforming third person shooter.

But why would anybody want just a "third person shooter" when you can have all of those qualities in Uncharted 2. That's why it's getting all the praise it deserves and doesn't stick to one formula that will limit the user experience.

Heck, if Gears of War 2 allowed us to move like Nathan Drake, I'm sure it would have changed the entire gameplay mechanics. Imagine climbing up a wall and chainsawing their legs off in MP. Or jumping across ledges to fight the horde. It opens up a lot more possibilities for fun gameplay.

That said, Uncharted 2 at it's core is still a Third Person Shooter though.

50% is pretty early. Depends what this includes. Are all levels there yet ? Is the story done ? MP missing ? Maps ? Normally if it reaches 80% it can change a lot within the last 20%. 50% usually is a prototype, nothing more.

good taste for games, this its gonna be ok in sales without my help, because of teen audience crazy for kill everything that moves on screen, even if the game become an absolute gears-clon, I like this game, but I hate the stereotypical Terminator-like guy, with big weapons and cliche, make duke nukem ashamed

The multiplayer part of it sounds really lame. But after all,its tecmo thats developping the game,so I really don't expect much from this game from day one.I really wish they just copied GoW2 rather than made their own stuff. The majority of Japanese PS3 owners don't like shooters, while this game won't succeed in other regions either unless it got a decent multiplayer.

4 - All I'm gonna say is give the game a chance
So far the game looks fine and worth buying to me

But remember back last year. From software introduced demon soul's for the ps3 and ninja blade for the 360. I remember CLEARLY how everyone was trying to hype ninja blade as a ninja gaiden (and more) kind of game while people CONSTANTLY said every bad thing about demon souls they could come up with

Fast forward a year. Ninja blade turns out average and is considered a flop by both review and game sales standpoint. And demon soul is on the verge of being considered being one of the greatest games of all time.

Point of the rambling, you can never be too sure of what game is good and what game is crap until you play it yourself. The only review and sale that should EVER count to you is your OWN

I really want to give this game a chance, but from the tone of the developer when he was talking about multiplayer,it seems like he doesn't even plan to focus on multiplayer or make it as great as the singleplayer. To me,if this game doesn't have a decent multiplayer,I may rent it or simply just pass it.

Hmm, my eyes are still on this game though just not as heavily as say a few other games. I'll give it the fact that it looks interesting so far, but other than that I'll just wait for a while until I pass judgment for myself as to whether or not I'll spend money on it (which I'll probably end up doing) or renting it.

"first time i saw Demon Soul i was laughing at the bad animation, the clumsy rolls etc. Demon Soul later turn out to my fave game this gen so far"

Amen to that. Usually, most people can judge a poor game based on some videos and things like that.

Demon's Souls was the exception to the rule that nobody expected.

So being open to all games might reveal a diamond in the rough.

8 - 50% done and releasing in Q1 of 2010-?!?!
so if this game is 50% and coming out in Q1 of 2010 thats only a couple months away, i hope this game gets delayed for a couple reasons 1) Q1 of 2010 is flooded 2) this game needs way more polishing and more online modes and coop!!!

And apparently, this game isn't getting any first-party support from Sony.Guess even Sony knows Tecmo can't come up with anything ground-breaking or outstanding, especially for shooters. And your right. How can a game be only 50% finished when it has only half a year before its release date.I suspect that we are looking at a major flop here.

10 - WTF.. Why are people bashing this game?
I saw this game live in person at E3, and came away very impressed.

Comparing this game to Gears is like comparing Halo 3 to Resistance 2. Yeah they are both shooters, and yeah they are cover based but Quantum Theory is a very unique title.

Also, I've played both Gears 1/2 and while the gameplay is very good, the game is missing a lot in terms of story and enviorment.

Quantum Theory has levels that are always changing, a great art style, and a interesting story. The gameplay has a interactive AI/combo-style fighting.

I think this game has a lot of potential to be very solid.

One Question:
At E3, The Director told me they changed the name to just "Quantum" and now it's back to Quantum Theory?

Right now this game graphically at least isnt looking great.

But they said that theyre working on the textures so to be honest i will reserve judgement unitl its released, or until we see gameplay footage representitive of the final game.

12 - I think Tecmo is using this game to bring the Japanese masses to appreciate "western type" games
So, I see some benefit. PS3 exclusive version of Gears of War, count me in! First-day purchase.
