Microsoft: Motion Is the New Multiplayer

Kotaku writes: "While Project Natal, and its ability to allow Xbox 360 gamers to play video games completely free of a controller, will launch as a niche of sorts on the platform, Microsoft believes it will one day become the norm.

Motion control, Microsoft Game Studios' corporate vice president Phil Spencer told Kotaku, will change what gamers expect from games."

1.1 - Natal's coverage is so ridiculous. On paper(what MS sends out to press) Its the bestest thing ever created. Yet, the reality...
Nintendo has proven this so wrong beyond wrong its sad. Nintendo is the generation leader, whether or not Microsoft(n4g) wants to believe it is. They have proven casuals just need basic inputs to have fun. The Wii & The DS proves this. They attract the gigantic general audience, including alllllll ages. Thats a demographic that neither sony nor microsoft can crack, because they didn't set out to do so in the first place.

Where is this gigantic pool of people who were too intimidated by the Wii? The millions upon millions of people who saw the DS/Wii and said "woah, theres no way i can do that! Aim a wand???? Pfft... no thanks Mr.Nintendo P Videogame, Ill pass!"

Wag the dog comes to mind with Microsofts Natal strategy.

This nor the SNE offering are what I am looking forward to when I roll a phatty, grab a Dualshock, and prepare to settle into several hours of bliss.

1.5 - Why would I want a laggy way of playing a game that needs precise timing?
Every demo has lag. Why? The only thing this will do will solidify those of us that love our handheld controllers.

Natal is nothing more than neat tech that is not really practical for realistic 3D gaming, waving your hands with invisible objects is not emersive, shooters need real triggers or button presses for each shot, racing games needs some sort of tactile feedback for acceleration and breaking. The only reasonable use would be for casual novelty type games and interface control, both of which would get little attention from me.

People will be saying this is cool for all of ten minutes before grabbing there controllers again.

All these Xbox 360 fanboys disagreeing will probably be the same people that say it sucks when it is released. They just think its a bullet point to use against the PS3 and Sony.

1.7 - Look at all the Japanese dev's microsoft paid off.
Everybody on this site knows that had sony introduced Natal all you ps3 loyalists would be screaming, "Ha ha see sony is being innovative with motion controls while micro is just following wii footsteps with a dildo wand." lol

Kojima, Kojima Productions: Natal is something “like the 2D to 3D shift, or the first time that I ever played with Family Computer [NES],”

Keiji Inafune, Capcom: "its a challenge for us to produce something beyond what we are used to doing. Iam certain Natal will bring that change. This doesn't mean its being replaced, but rather, its being enhanced."

Yozu Sakagami, Namco Bandai: "We are excited like kids with a new toy. Everyone on the team was coming up with new ideas."

Keisuke Kikuchi, Tecmo: "Our team has started planning for games to play on Natal, and we came up with 72 ideas all together."

Kenichiro Imaizumi, Kojima Productions: "Its quite revolutionary to us, we never really thought of it that way. We imagined it before but we never thought it would come so quickly. So it took us by surprise. What we will create on Natal would be something that has no limitations. Ideas from outside the box."

Toshihiro Nagoshi, Sega: "The most innovative side is its controller free and it focuses on voice recognition."

Masanori Takeuchi, From Software: "I think Natal is beyond the concept of any existing game. With Natal, I thought that we'd be able to do something new on the Xbox 360 again. I hope to expand the current gaming experience, rather than evolve gaming into something irrevelant to current games. But with Natal this becomes a possibility."

Naoki Maeda, Konami: "I'd like to create a more realistic music entertainment with Natal for my fans."

lol, the excitement about Natal is just killing the sony loyalists, hmmm so should I wait and see if Natal can pull some new tricks like ALL these well seasoned developers seem to think it potentially can <<OR>> should I believe folks with a comment history of hating anything micro/360 related, hmmm tough choice, lmfao>>>>> Cry harder, sonyfanboys.

That's all natal is, is Eyetoy 3.0. Where has there been a successful onstage or public tech demonstration of Natal in action working flawlessly? There hasn't. It's just hype and Microsoft knows hype.

It's been proven ineffective in capturing any market even the niche.
Shut this user up Let user speak
Shbzshar - 67 days 2 hours ago
2.5 - yes but
a major reason for its ineffectiveness in capturing the mass market was becoz right from day one it was strictly an add on... even till today eye toy is still an optional experience. it has its own brand of little games in the side lines and was never really pushed in anyway..

the only difference here i see is ms is actually hell bent on bringing this to the mass market... i mean when they say they want to relaunch a the 360 with natal in it... or an inbuilt natal in a 360... its obvious they want to push this harder... with that sort of push you'll have more people having that motion cam in their homes... and with that increased market share even more developers will want a piece of the action... competition to make better software for it builds up between them and eventually we'll see better games released...

ms needs to push natal coz if they dont it'll just turn into the eye toy... same goes for sony's wand... becoz both have changed their perspective on gaming mid generation

Really eyetoy and Natal face the same problems, they both need good games. There is only 1 game with the eyetoy/PS3eye that remotley interests me, and that isn't enough. So far Natal hasn't proven itself to be any different.

I hear all of this hype about the tech, but none of it matters until they show a game that actually utilizes it beyond slapping things. I honestly can't see hardcore applications without some sort of controller. People suggest things like fighting games, but even then how long can you last? 15 minutes? People are not going to turn their consoles on for 15 minute intervals.

They need to realize that people are LAZY. We don't want to exert ourselves when playing games. For this reason, I think full body motion capture is useless. When movement actually becomes part of the game (ie moving more than 2 feet in each direction, VR) than I'll get into that type of motion controller.

@I did not murder him
Please give me 5 examples of games that will use Natal in ways that appeal to hardcore gamers, or current hardcore games implementation. I got nothing, what can you come up with. It's easy to call every skeptic a fanboy, but I have yet to see any brilliant ideas from people supporting it.

LOL The bitter people trolling disagreed.

Angry because of the Minority Report dashboard the 360 will have when Natal launches, angry and bitter because it will make the Wii adoption look like warn-ups with its appeal, game-software and applications. http://www.reviewstl.com/wp...
http://www.pikesoft.com/blo...

Scared Natal will negate what little progress Sony made and then some.

I have a crazy idea. Why doesn't Sony use it's development studios to sometimes produce full-length CGI films that can be released on Blu-Ray or downloaded off of the PS Store. Uncharted 2 has great characters and a decent story and great voice acting, so why doesn't Sony start a series of films using the engines. There could be a full-length Killzone film, a full-length Uncharted film, a full-length Resistance film, and so on and so forth. Because often times I want to just sit back and enjoy the games as if they are films. I got the idea from Halo Legends from Microsoft. Both companies have in-house resource to produce and market films, and they already have built-in audiences.

Let's wait to see what people actually spend real money on before proclaiming the next gizmo to be the biggest thing ever for the advancement of video games. I suspect it will be a nice feature, but not something that is going to make every gamer clear up space in front of their couch so they can jump & run around while playing games.

11 - no,it's not the new multiplayer.
but it could be cool to play multiplayer online against someone else.those hating on motion just need to quit.

i didn't see gamers hating on the atari joystick after pongs knob.didn't see gamers hating on nintendo for the nes controller after atari.didn't see gamers hating on sega or sony or microsoft unless the d-pad was poor or the triggers.people game in different ways.

i can have just as much fun with time crisis or sega's firefighter game or sega's L.A machine guns.those controllers are nothing like a standard controller.but you can still have fun without any controller if the game is done right.

creepy judas, eyetoy and it's games are cool.just as natal could be cool if they can get it to work right without delay.eyetoy itself sold at least 15 million worldwide.the problem was sony america not getting serious about eyetoy like the european arm of sony.so it never took off in america like it should have to add to ps2's library.and because of it,nintendo took it further and now dominate in the casual scene.

here's hoping this time they are serious.microsoft and sony could bring a new type of gaming to consoles.it's not replacing controllers.just adding new type of games.some of you don't have to like it,but at least accept the fact that everyone plays and like something different.

as for "i did not murder him",you need to stop crying all the time about sony fans.they can be unbiased even if most of us have been speaking the truth since ps3 launch.come up with something new.crying about sony fans is not working for you.

It's pointless crying about Natal a handful of PS3 trolls are not going to convince the masses Natal is not worth supporting especially when the gaming media, developer community, mainstream media and most gamers think the world of it lol.

So the supporters of MSFT and this tech should not have to read the regurgitated drivel from people that wake up everyday thinking about how they're going to attack the 360 next. lol

Give it up and tell the rest of the PS3 fan pals to stop worrying about Natal there is nothing they can do about it. No amount of spin, attacks, me too campaigns & smear campaigns will change anything all you're doing is preaching the anti MSFT bible to anti MSFT believers lol

typical sheeple. i bought my 360 at launch and my ps3 at launch. i don't feel motion tech as the way of the gaming future. sure, it has application for casual games, but most hardcore gamers want precision within the controls for their games. obviously, you claim that the ps3 haters dislike natal because "it" could be better than anything sony does, but in reality, it is YOU(ididnotmurderhim) blindly defending anything micro produces. i mean look at your avatar, irobot was a horrible movie, you smack it on your avatar attempting to state a point......
