No Gears of War 3 Until Next-Gen -TGS 2009

Gears of War Launch: November 7, 2006
Gears of War 2 Launch: November 7, 2008
Gears of War 3 Launch: 2012? 2013?!

According to Epic Games’ President Mike Capps, that’s a very real
scenario. Speaking at the TGS 2009 earlier today, Capps stated the
following: ‘If there were a next Gears of War, that will be for the
next console generation, whenever that is. If someone knows, please
tell me! That’s about four or five years away, I think.

I am 110% in support of this, as Gears 2 felt slightly rushed in my
opinion. The original Gears of War was one of the most-played online
titles, and I feel that Epic wanted to hurry to get Gears of War 2 out
so that they didn’t lose that momentum.

Also, lead game designer for the Gears of War franchise, Cliff
Bleszinzki, hinted that the next iteration of Gears could include RPG
(that’s Role-Playing Game) elements. If this is true, it will only
widen the appeal of the franchise past the shooter genre into the area
already occupied by the Mass Effect series, the BioShock series,
Fallout 3, and the upcoming Borderlands which looks to equally balance
the FPS and RPG genres.

In the meantime, I would like for Epic to concentrate heavily on DLC
for Gears of War 2 that can fill in the gaps in the story for those
that do NOT want to read ‘The Pendulum Wars’, ‘Aspho Fields’ and
‘Jacinto’s Remnant’. A few more map packs couldn’t hurt either.

If anything, I'd offer congratulations for NOT posting his blogged opinion as breaking news.

Also, I guess we all missed this little update:

"Epic's Michael Capps has since clarified his comments, and was less certain whether the next Gears of War would be for the current generation or not. "If we ship a game in the next few years, it'll be Unreal Engine 3," he said, "If we ship a game on next [generation] consoles, it will likely be Unreal Engine 4."

Mark Rein, vice president of Epic, offered further clarification in an e-mail to IGN that stated, "That's a gross misinterpretation of what he [Michael Capps] actually said."
