i was really disappointed with FF12, and since FF13 was suppose to be ps2 game then there is a possibility that its not so much different from FF12!!!

if you look at the square schedule, they have a time slot to discuss square-enix/xbox 360 projects

no mention at all of ps3 projects.. and no mention of last remnant for the ps3.. at E3 they said first for the 360 implying a timed exclusive.. now when you look at their tgs08 site.. it ONLY lists the 360 version. by the time the ps3 version comes out i probably wont even care..

i'm moving on from square-enix.. i'm hoping level 5, atlus, sega and a few others can replace them on the ps3. at least the other titles will be ready before ffxiii comes out.

i'll treat ffxiii like any other title, i'll wait for previews and post game release reviews before i get excited about them again..

Sony spend most of their cash for the past 15 years building studios in USA and Europe, because Sony knows that local studios sell games locally (very true still, European games does better in Europe, USA games does better in USA generally).

They left Japan wide open because it was home turf, and they assume they have enough powerhouse to back themselves up. Having Sony's own Japan Studio (still one of the bigger ones) was probably enough they thought...

So after 15 yrs, Sony has yet to acquire RPG maker but has establish some fine relationships with Nippon Ichi and Level 5. Sony this is the time to flex the those cash if Sony wants to lock in RPG market, Sony should move in closer tie or acquire Level 5 and Nippon Ichi before someone else does.

But financially, I think World Wide Studio is pretty much broke until they can make a turn around on investment from Little Big Planet and Motorstorm 2 after acquiring Evolution and BigBig Studio last year.

Edit: Japan Studio itself made assortment of things, and there is a RPG team just in case you wonder. That team made Folklore which would have been successful if they had enough money to advertise a bit more heavily

I think Sony needs to move on from Square, not cut them off, but leave them to their own devices. Sony should, like Raoh said, work with other developers to try to replace what square would bring to the console. Square is good, but Level-5 is better.

Should they acquire Level-5? Maybe. Probably. It's a tough call. But Nippon Ichi? Definitely not. It wouldn't be worth it. Here's how important Nippon Ichi games are to the success of the Playstation brand: in the upcoming titles section in the August edition of Qore (which lists every single game coming out for the system in the given month, including multiplatform games), Disgaea 3 was completely absent. Where was it? Who knows, but apparantly Sony forgot it existed. Nippon Ichi games rarely sell well, absolutely never break a million, and are generally considered cult games. Quite frankly, the studio has never shown that it can produce a blockbuster or a system-seller. I love NIS, they're one of my favorite developers, and Disgaea 3 is currently one of my favorite games to play, but I just don't think that spending money to acquire that company would do much to help Sony. They need a Level-5 much more, someone with experience doing large-scale big-budget block-buster titles and snazzy 3D graphics that'll excited the more common gamer.

Looks like everybody assuming SE's already picked 360 side. I rather say it's difficult to tell yet. Just look at IU's sale in japan (or WW) you 'll see SE's calculation doesn't really work. I would say JRPG with similar quality, published by SE, could easily sales 0.2M-0.3M for PS3 in Japan ONLY (sees Ryu Ga Gotaku, which is indeed not a so highly anticipated ACT title). If SE really looks at quick $, it just didn't work out as much as they expected. May be you can blame it's an new IP......

If you look at the best games, they`re usually exclusive ones (in 360`s case they can be on PC at the same time too, because of the similarities between them).

E-mail Sony and tell them to stop demanding that 3rd parties view them as a god, and to start buying exclusivity for 3rd party games like a normal company. When a 3rd party game reaches critical acclaim it's going to the highest bidder, not the company that "thinks" they should get it just because they exist. I think you gave me the wrong links here, because both are the same and show the best games for consoles going back to the PS1. The list also shows more exclusive games, despite multiplatform games having two version of the same game.

Either way, i don`t use gamerankings to show what kinds of games is the best on platforms, because some have more reviews than others, which is clearly unfair. If you asked PS3 owners what their top 10 games would be, do you think a lot would say GTA4 or Orange Box ?

Compared to the vast number of multiplatform games being out, i think exclusive games is clearly the best. The most anticipated games is normally also exclusive ones. For PS3 this year : MGS4, LBP, R2, M2. For 360 : Gears 2, Fable 2, VP2. Multiplatform : Fallout 3, Mirror`s Edge, POP, Far Cry 2.

As for FF13 case specifically, i`m sure some dosn`t like that SE is doing a lot of 360 games and got FF13 also. I won`t matter a thing for me as long as the game`s good (or that we might see some actual gameplay soon hehe). But, it will take longer for the game to come out now because multiplatform development enquires more developers and they have to make it for both systems (which is why exclusive games also look better).

Licensing was the only thing paid for until Microsoft came into the mix. You want proof of this? All you have to do is look at FFVII. Square is doing the same thing with the PS3 and Sony, just like they did with Nintendo-kicking them to the curb.

Square Enix went downhill after FFX, which I think is a good game. FFVII and FFVIII were really good games but the only thing I didn't like about FFVIII was the storyline.

There are other talented companies out there BESIDES Square. Square is not the god of rpgs as you so put it.

Microsoft had rpgs coming for their system. Why must they gobble up FFXIII as well? Anyone with a brain could see that something went down between Square and Microsoft. We may never know what happened. We may never know if a contract was signed or if money was paid. What I do know is that if that game stayed exclusively to the PS3, it would have generated a LOT of PS3 sales.

As of right now, I don't care if it's multiplatform anymore. I agree with Raoh.

If it turns out to be a really good game, I will buy it. If not, I'll brush it aside.

I think what 1 game is actually an exclusive to 360 from SE while the rest are timed exclusive and even that game there are rumors that it is a timed exclusive as well...so ya i would say that SE are making the games for both the 360 and PS3 they are multiplats. Just timed and the reason may be that they want to get the games out asap on the 360 so that they can use the extra money to help fund the PS3 versions of the same game...

Also Juuken - i never said the FF franchise is the "god" of JRPGS but they sure as heck helped the PS 1&2 become the best selling consoles of both those generations and to just blow them off is ludicris.

It goes both ways. Sony helped launch the FF series into mainstream popularity and is greatly responsible for the fact that FF even continued after FFVII. Sony bailed Squaresoft out of bankruptcy before, and they own 12% of SE. Eye for an Eye as it were.

Well you have to remember that their first success started out on the Nintendo not Sony. The Quote "We don't want Sony to be the overwhelming victor" may sound arrogant but its good business - this allows them to spread out their potential market and with the PS3 in last place it makes sense. In order to make money off of their games they need a larger install base which the PS1 & 2 had but not so much the PS3.

This to me doesn't make any sense as the game is still coming out on the PS3 console. with it coming out on the 360 they will in turn increase their potential sales as there is now 2 consoles and thus 2x the amount of potential buyers. Now Capcom is a different story...the PS3 was last to the market and on top of that more difficult to develop for - IMHO i think capcom developed for the 360 as they are a gaming software company and thus need to make games. There is no sense them not making games or put games on hold just because the PS3 is late to the market...they need to make games to make money and since the 360 was out first it was a quick way to make a game and get it out ASAP on the 360. Without a constant income the company would close. Remember the 360 isn't the first console where they made an exclusive game for - the original xbox had a game called steel battalion (my most favorite game of all time).

Now in regards to respect - we don't know what the politics are in the gaming industry - maybe something happened with Sony and the 3rd party developers maybe developers just think it cost more to develop games for the PS3...we just don't know - but it would be foolish of you or me to go off on a tangent and make accusations or assumptions when we don't even know what the full story is...

I think so far SE had really gone throu some real bad times that dragged them in such dilemma:
1. Next Gen came - SE picked PS3 to develop FF13 series
2. PS3 failed to deliver - SE digged into some new low cost projects to finance themself & start considering XB for foreign market
3. SE profit dropped, stocks fell - SE FORCED to make deal w/ XB (with new IPs, developed by XB mother-tongue UE as trial n error), started negotiating on FF titles
After gone throu all these, the "next" really lies on how SE conceives the outcome so far...
If they view IU, LR and SO4 as a success (which I hardlly wouldn't agree they would if LR and SO4 failed to achieve 0.5m among debutting) they may stick to XB and treat sony as second-thought. 'Cause experiments proven positive result and they could play safe!
If not, they may swing.
In fact, they started already on handheld by switching FF13A & PE to PSP while seeing boost in PSP software sales demonstrated by MH in japan.

S-E making such statements only exposes their pride and pompous attitude. They seem to think they are the messiah of the gaming industry, and their support for any console will determine its success. They have not supported the PS3 so far, and the system is still going very strong (although i have to admit, PS3 sales could be alot better), so maybe they need to slow down a little bit with such short sighted thinking. This is why i strongly urge fellow PS3 owners to give a tremendous amount of support to level 5 and the upcoming WKS. All sony need to do is boost their advertising and ensure that people dont still harbor those misconceptions about how the system lacks games.

And i have to agree with Apocalypse Shadow, Square is probably emulating the recent multi-platform behavior from other Japanese Devs (Capcom started the trend), due to the money crisis. All i am waiting for is a Tekken 6 multi platform announcement.

Shadow, I'm waiting for that announcement as well. Tekken 6 was going to jump ship to go to the 360 side as well, but I don't know if they will still choose to or not. Square-Enix is hurting for money this generation and I would expect bad news for PS3 owners, because look at the fact 360 marketing is doing a great job promoting jRPG's. Microsoft can get the word out there about games more than Sony. Sony need to get themselves together, and promote the hell out of titles that come to system, exclusive or not.

Square makes quality games but, unlike last gen, they aren't the top of the console dev tree. Their games will likely be similar to old FFs and we can do better this gen.

When FFXIII comes out it will likely underwhelm, SE has just waited too long. They are right I am more interested in Level 5 and its WKC at the moment because we have actually seen footage of it and it looks amazing graphically, not to mention the battle system looks at least a bit altered in comparison to everything else we have seen this gen.

All I want from SE is the next MMO project. FFXIII hype is dwindling and FFVXIII feels almost dead. Dissidia looks ok but isn't really FF. Maybe if they announce KH3 I will be somewhat interested again.

While I agree with most of what you said, there is one thing that's making square hypocrisy stand out is the fact that they are taking this supposed multiplatform stand but they are only showing the love to one console.

If they did this last gen, then people -should- have been just as outraged on the xbox as well.

If that's the case, then why doesn't square port it to the Wii? It is the biggest seller everywhere. Hell, why not the PSP? It is the latest craze in Japan. Or the DS? It has the largest install base... However, if you had used your brain a little more, you'd realize that those consoles can't handle FFXIII which is why games are made. Some developers are confident that their game is so good and worthy of being compared to works of fine art that they can take the "risk" of making a game single platform.

IT's not that fanboys are selfish. It's that hardcore gamers would like to see the developers take a game to the max and not to the lowest common denominator. DVD9 is going to hurt FFXIII and make it just another traditional RPG instead of what could have been an Open World RPG. Or, it will be an open world with only a DVD9 of information repeated across 5 discs to get a linear storyline, take your pick, either way it'll be an inferior product.

I didn't expect anything better from you anyway, maybe you wouldn't have thought the same about Dreamcast and PS2 back in the days since it was Sega versus Sony not Microsoft versus Sony. The only ones selfish here are the ones that want to screw Final Fantasy for everyone and make it yet another traditional RPG with no innovations at all or AAA production values. I believe they started going downhill after FFX, which was a good game and an innovation in the series because it's the first VO'ed FFX. Story was OK, gameplay was a blast.

FFIX was the best FF IMO because it paid lots of homage to the others, and it had tons of new features and a very intriguing story.

FFXII while I admit wasn't the pinnacle of all final fantasies, it's sort of a.....multi-optional final fantasy where you could play however you wanted to, even though the license grid was a joke.

What people fail to understand is that if you put the battle system on wait instead of active, cancel all of your gambits, you could completely make the game turn-based. I hated Gambits but the more I played with them, the funner they became.

You're probably right about FF9 actually. I should give it another play through at some point. It just doesn't stick in the memory, and all I recall it for is a bit of a slog towards the end.

FFX was a blast, but I found it a bit 'twee' for want of a better word. It seemed to be desperately trying to tap in to the feel of FF7.

I just couldn't keep playing FFXII - it's the only FF I've never bothered completing. I just couldn't face the grind style game play. I play JRPG's (and RPG's in general) to experience the solid single player aspect that many MMO's lack. To have an 'MMO style' framework wrapped up in a pretty weak story, with (mostly) generic weak characters (with some exceptions) just disappointed too much.

As one of the other posters on this topic mentioned, I'm much more excited by Chrono Trigger DS. And I'd much rather have Star Ocean multi-plat (I prefer not to disc swap - but will buy on 360 if necessary).

I have little hope for Last Remnant. I'm starting to lose my faith in FF13. I'm more excited about Chrono Trigger DS than Last Remnant right now. Square Enix needs to get back to making good games, and then maybe I will care. Something seems to be going on under the table. MS is getting all these games and Sony is losing them. I'm still excited about TGS. I think Sony is gonna make us proud to be PS3 fans even if Square Enix throws a low blow to us, yet again.

I lost all faith and/or interest in Square Enix because of a huge disappointment known as Unlimited Saga. Now, any of you rpg fans out there know that expectations were (and I mean damn rightfully so) set extremely high when the two biggest rpg companies of all time known as Squaresoft and Enix, were set to merge. They had made some of the best rpg's ever. And then the HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE piece of S*IT game that was their opening project. Unlimited piece of S*IT that shouldnt be considered a game if you ask me. The only titles comfirmed from Square for the PS3 are Last Remnant and FF13 and verse 13. I smell the Nintendo days againwhere they jumped from the Snes to the Playstation. Then from the Playstation2 to the 360, this is not me making a flamewar. Square has been going down since the man who was responsible for FF7 left and made LO. Seriously the main character in LO looks awesome. We need more characters like that Zach, Cloud, Sephiroth and Squall. Less Tidus and Vaan please. Lightning looks sexy good so no complaints there and VS main characters hearken back to the FF7 series type characters so I'm kinda hyped for these titles. Square still has got some great programmers so I would not sell them short however history shows that they are loyal to no one but the dollar so don't expect loyalty from that company.

Why is SquareEnix giving the Xbox 360 more exclusive rpgs then the Playstation 3? It doesn't look like SquareEnix wants to go multi cause if they did, why is Star Ocean 4 and Infinite Undiscovery exclusive to the Xbox 360 and Last Remnant timed exclusive? I can understand Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery being exclusive but Star Ocean 4 thats not even fair. SquareEnix better hope its worth it.

On my part it's not fanboyism as some of you claim. i planned on all 3 systems being in my home. and for a time had just that. i got rid of my 360 due to hardware issues. three 360's in under a year is unacceptable to me. switched to the ps3 and now have two ps3's and going for a third after or around the holidays. there are a few 360 games i would love to play. upcoming star ocean, gears of war 2, left 4 dead.. but those are not titles that would make me want to buy another 360. having my ps3's and (after giving a wii to a family member i plan to buy another wii for myself) a wii is more than enough gaming for me.

last years rant was no games on ps3, this year we have games. now its loss fo exclusives, but the 360 not only lost some exclusives too but actually lied about them being exclusive when in fact they were timed exclusives with an nda put in place to hide that fact..

at a higher price the ps3 has been outselling the 360. the only thing that saved the 360 this year is a price cut and buying in to an exclusive game.

and thats not surprising. just like teh company microsoft outside of gaming, it has a bigger warchest (spending money) than most of its competitors. it doesnt make them a better company just richer.

i have no problem with valve saying they only want to work with microsoft 360. its their choice and while i dont agree with gabes comments he spoke what he thought and meant it. i can respect that. who knows maybe valve will go multi console and gabe will leave and work for microsoft directly. all possible and wouldnt surprise anyone.

square enix on the other hand said they were staying on the ps3. then said they were going multi. first indication was last remnant. then they announced 360 exclusives. what about going multi? dont worry they said ffxiii franchise is still sony only. then they announce ffxiii going multi.. now there is a 360/square time slot.

1. microsoft eats it young. meaning they partner up with a company, assimilate it, kill it then release a lesser copy of it with the microsoft name. they need to be careful who they sleep with.

2. gamers arent as loyal and kind as some think. by the time ffxiii releases, both the 360 and the ps3 will have had a few rpg's out already. ffxiii better be more than great the spotlight is on.

3. if they decide to condense the game to accommodate the 360, and release dlc like past 360 rpg games (buy your levels, buy your mana buy your weapon etc) that will not sit well with rpg gamers. and we are already seeing that on 360 rpg games. i'm sure square is excited at the thought of selling dlc to costumers and MS made it quite appealing to them.

4. i dont mind exclusivity and multi games. i actually prefer a different kind of multi console releases. the ps3 is getting naruto ultimate storm exclusive to the ps3. the 360 is getting noruto broken sword.

both systems get a single franchise exclusive to each system. each game catered to that systems benefits. that i like.

5. most important of all. square is behind the times or arrogant. the playing field is much larger now than back in the day. much more competition for them. also when square made the switch from nintendo to sony. the big difference was the ps2 was dvd based over cartridges. big things there. aside from blu ray on the ps3 and a year head start on the 360. the differences arent that huge anymore. square actually thinks they can change the earths axis by siding with microsoft the way they did with sony one time. at the time the square titles were the best rpg games around. this time around? the best rpg's are being made by a lot of companies........ square is spreading itself out to much..

kojima never said he was exclusive to the ps3 or that konami was.. he just said that metal gear solid 4 was.. other than that he said he would gladly and expects to make games on the 360 as well, no ps3 gamer took that as an insult

outside of Final Fantasy XIII, Versus XIII, Agito, and Dissidia, i haven't had much of an interest in ANYTHING Square-Enix is bringing to the table for the PS3 OR 360.

hell, i was only interested in Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant as a courtesy.

the magic of the early to mid 90's, SNES/PS1 Square-Enix has been gone long before FFXIII was announced for the 360.

outside of Kingdom Hearts and FFXII, i was really disappointed in what Square-Enix has been doing the past 8 years.

i've been a gamer for a long time (since 1985), and i remember when practically EVERYTHING Squaresoft did was gold.

from Secrets of Mana, to the FF series, to the Chrono series, to Parasite Eve, Brave Fencer Mushashi, Tactics, and Xenosaga, you could buy ANY Squaresoft game on the market, and chances are have a good time (excepting the Saga Frontier series. those were...uh...INTERESTING...).

nowadays, i don't get excited from anything by Square unless it has FF in the title, which is sad, for me.

RPG houses like Nipon Ichi, and most certainly Level 5, make me feel all giddy inside when i hear about their new products.

hell, even the team that made Odin Sphere, who are working on a Wii game that looks AWESOME, and i can't STAND the Wii, but i'm seriously considering picking one up for this game.

those guys get me excited and happy about their games.

Square, to me, has simply become another developer who i'll see what they're cooking because of their pedigree, but it's not an instant "PUT ON MY WATCH LIST," like games from Insomniac, Bioware, Level 5, Naughty Dog, Kojima Productions, etc, etc.

this has nothing to do with "console loyalty," but the quality of the games Square-Enix has been releasing lately.

Sony and Sony fans should just move on. Not saying, don't buy on FFXIII. Buy it if you like/if it will be good, just as initially you would. Sony should just move on and try to bring Level-5 in. Nomura will show off his exclusive PS3 Games at the TGS soon.

I loved FF since the nintendo days, I loved it more in the Sony days as well but after I noticed a change starting with FF 11 and 12, I started to lose interest. It does not have anything to do with PS3 owners hating on Square because it going to be on 360. Its really about how they change the traditional standards of how Final Fantasy and other games was. Its good to improve a game but never change what made Final Fantasy big in the first place. What I mean is battle system, gameplay etc. So now that there are changes with Square including the new home base Square begins to sit upon and their different game structure. This is what makes people hate on them. I still got love for them and I will be getting Final Fantasy XIII on the PS3.

ps3 has no where near the stranglehold on the console gaming business the ps2 had/has. what square-enix is doing is a smart move with the fact that developement costs are now a lot higher than last-gen especially with the ps3- why wouldnt they want to make as much money as possible. sony fans say they feel betrayed- if thats how you feel then quit gaming PERIOD. square-enix has never said that now they hate sony and the playstation brand have they? thought not. they are a busines that made a business decision-not a personal attack on sony. i believe sony understands square-enix's decision why cant you fanboys/fangirls?

I think Square is becoming arrogant more and more everyday, makes a guy wanna slam their heads into a wall. I think it is because Square sorta snubs off other consoles, I can see why the change from the Snes to the PS1 cause of cds. But if you look at it its the consoles that ultimatly make or break a developer. Honestly i would not be surprised if Square realses both FF13's and Last Remnant. And mainly concentrate on the 360. I am a big FF fan but you can only milks a franchise so much, Dissida or what ever its call lets throw some final fantasy chracters and call it Final Fantasy and all they are doing is beat each other up. I think they have to sit down take the stick out of their arse and come up with some orginal ideas. Actually, Sony owes quite a bit to Square for taking FF away from Nintendo and making FF7 a PSx exclusive. It was an announcement that hindered n64. And Sony people praised it! Now, when the shoe is on the other foot Sony fanboys don't like the taste so much.

As an owner of both I could care less which console has a game exclusive, or not. Seriously though, when it comes to RPGs I feel they should be on the PS3. Now right now the last great RPG I played was on the 360 which was Lost Odyssey, but for a 4 disc game to be beaten in under 30 hours is rediculous. The developers/publishers obviously choose the 360 for the install base, and I understand that, but they could do so much more with the PS3. Look at Infinite Undiscovery, parts of the town you can't even enter!! It was a 13 hour game, the last 2 disc game that tri-Ace had was Star Ocean: Till the End of Time for PS2, and I got 70+ hours out of that!! I've been playing RPGs for over 15 years now, and I have never been more disapointed then this current gen.
