Microsoft set to announce 360 price drop at GDC?

With the Microsoft key-note due within mere hours - can we also expect to see cheaper 360's within the same time frame?

That's become more of a possibility over recent days, but today that rumour has acquired a little more substance. It was widely expected that we'd see a drop in RRP of some sort during the early months of 2008 - keeping in mind there were no announcements pre-festive period and with PS3 gathering momentum, now would seem like the perfect time to strike a blow.

1 - Looks like the Blu-ray win is beginning to kick in
Playstation 3 gets an advantage with the Blu-ray press, Microsoft aim to stop it.
But this is the same mistake they made with the Xbox 1. Making it too cheap makes consumers think it has less value. Befor Microsoft stopped production of the Xbox 1 you could buy in the shops with 2 games and 2 controllers for £50 quid! little more than the price of a PS2 game.

Dropping the price too fast makes the wider public think that Xbox are have a closing down sale.

No, they should drop $50 off of xbox live gold and make it free. Then annouce the new SKU that fixes the faulty hardware.

I agree. and they shouldn't drop the price yet. They are selling fairly well still and GTA 4 isn't out yet. I think they will wait for GTA IV or Christmas.

i think you should count on it.. something for microsoft to get back on track.. a price drop would do that, maybe an announcment of an exclusive. The ps3 train is rolling... M$ gotta find a way to slow it down.. if its possible at all, i mean the 360 is still at a lower price point

2.1 - This can definitely help
Especially in the states. The problem with the 360 as far as price is concerned, is that its most popular sku is not that much cheaper than the 40 gig PS3. And anyone with any sense knows what is the better value there. a good price strategy is probably the only thing than can keep Microsoft in a good position going forward, as the quality of games for both consoles will start to even out.

I really dont see a point in cutting the price now when they're claiming there will be hardware shortages until march...

They probably had a meeting 15 minutes ago about it after they realised their booth machines were RRODing hehehe.:P
im just kidding.

Microsoft need to bite the bullet. chill out, fix the problem and push xbox again. They are Pi$$ing in the wind at this point in time.

However if they did what i just suggested it would seal the deal in them being 3rd this gen.

is a game developers conference a place to be announcing hardware price cuts?

7 - They do need to cut the price
And this is the time for it. 50 bucks is fine, but 100 would be even better. Even better than that would be a redesigned 360 with harddrive made standard. It should be interesting to see what is said at GDC. For the past few months, Microsoft has just seemed to have the attitude of being content with where they are, and not really putting any effort into trying to stay ahead of the competition. They need to stop messing around and make some moves before people start to loose interest.

People are silly. In its first year the PS3 saw a $100 dollar price drop (in some cases even more). So now all of sudden because Blu-ray won a movie format war, Microsoft wants to stop it's momentum? How about the fact that it's just time for one. Better yet, it makes sense...The minute you guys stop being delusional, is when that "superior product" in black will actually do what its supposed to do...In the mean time, stop being such haters...

*Of course the truth will be disagreed with...just keep on hating, cause it's backfiring...Remember the Giants. Betting against us is good*

your theory could be correct, other peoples theory could be correct

you cant call people delusional just because they made a suggestion (and a fairly reasonable one too)

it could actually be that M$ is aiming to steal some of the PS3's thunder with a price drop

9 - Warning to Microsoft.
Sales of a console can plummet if the price is cut too low, too early. Nintendo already learned this the hard way. If the PS3 is outselling the 360 by a large margin despite being more expensive, I'm not sure how this would help.

This was to be expected. However I'm wondering by how much. They only dropped it by 50 dollars last time. I'm wondering why they chose 50 and not just a full 100. And if they drop another 50 or 100, would they start losing money on their consoles?

A price cut at this point is pretty redundant. There's no additional incentive to buy this console. It needs more announcements like games.

11.1 - It has already
had some great games that have already been released that a new buyer may want to play. And there are some good games coming this year that can be a reason to buy the 360. But they really need to drop the price of their console. I bought my 360 at launch, and had no problem to pay the price I did at the time. But if I hadn't already bought my 360 and PS3 already, and was in the market for a next gen console right now. I'd be looking really hard at the 40 gig PS3 right now, and the 360 pro would probably be my second console to buy at a later date while i hopped on the better value of the PS3 right now. On one hand, you have a console with some great games currently, and on the other hand you have a console that has some good games and is an entry-level Blu-ray player (which means even more now with HD-DVDs demise). And the only thing that really separates the decision on what to buy would be an extra 50 bucks? They do need more game announcements, but the price needs to come down.

price cut is not what xbox needs! unless it's of higher version model like elite. xbox shouldn't compromise their specs like their hard-drive or something for a bump in their sales seriously.

14 - This
can only be a good thing for all gamers that don't own a 360.

The PS3 was forced to drop its price after only 4 months and look at what effect that had.

So for me this makes sense. The 360 is in to its 3rd year and can afford to drop it's price to keep it competitive.

The premium pack needs to be priced at £189.00 for the UK. This means for just over £200 you could play GTA4 when released. And a lot of gamers with little money, can then jump in to the next gen gaming scene.

OF course the 360 should have a price drop, the ps3 had TWO price drops within the first year, while the 360 has only had one within lamost 2 and a half years, and $20 off the core and $50 dollars off the premium aint much, they need to drop the arcade to $199 already, and the pro to $279.

Because with blu-rays victory and a 40gig PS3 at $399 with SIX free blu0ray movies is just too sweet a deal and too close in price to the 360
