1 - ehm
why should we?
sure we all want more chrono but what would be the point of everyone going out and buying chrono on the ds only to have the next game appear on the 360 or something
seeing the way square-enix has been lately i wouldn't doubt it
if people went out and bough chrono trigger ds then at least give the people another one on the system it sold on

The reason final Fantasy exist is because of the money, and there was not a care free time where square was doing games just for the people. Get that fairy tale make belief time out of your head. Square was going to close if FF1 did not sell well, they would not of continued and kept on making games if they did not sell, cause the fans wanted them. If you think these companies would keep on making games all while they where losing money all the time just to keep their beloved fans happy, you are wrong. And it makes complete sense to say that they would of made a new chrono trigger if the DS re-release would of sold well. Why would they want to make a franchise that has been selling less and less since the first one?
I think in the end it just proves that the Vocal minority on the internet don't have a the buying power, just a b*tching and praising power.

There's also the problem that many people reject sequels. Look at how many people irrationally hate Chrono Cross and nothing tells me that a new one would be any better recieved.
Even a jump from 2D to 3D can put off people, as is the case with the new Golden Sun. Many people don't like the look of it because it's 3D.

Looking back at it, I think chrono Cross was one of the better PS1 RPGs, at the time I was also a tad disappointed but it was a very good game, Chrono Trigger was such a pinnacle game on the SNES for so many people I don't think anything could of topped it.
People have to accept change, I hate this attitude of the so called "purists" that think a game should always play like it did there first time playing it, it's like the crack head saying I want that same high I git the first time I smoked crack...IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN! lol

Maybe I'm in the minority but I enjoyed Chrono Cross more than Chrono Trigger and I would definitely buy Chrono Cross if they Re-released it. Hell I bought FF7 on PSN even though I have my original game discs for PS1. Unfortunately most people choose to complain about the game instead of going out and actually buying it.

So every game has to sell like Halo3 and Gears2 in sales for it to be worthy of a sequel or remake?
I mean look at something like Killzone 1 to Killzone 2. That was time and money WELL spent on something that was not a great success at the first attempt.
I can predict a game of that stature in the future. Dead Space 1 I bet didn't sell remarkably, but the reviews and the praise it has will merit it for a sequel.
Square needs to realize if their REVIEWS for games were solid and they made enough to break even on what they spent to make it, then make a sequel.
Do they think FF franchise would've been a success if they just stopped at say FF3 because it sold less than what they wanted? Come the f*ck on. Take one for the team and PROVE to us what BS you are spewing is true. Make a new Chrono game, for PS3 only and back it up like you do the FF franchise. Guarantee you will have a system seller. Guaranteed.

Well I did buy Chrono Trigger on the DS. But does Square-Enix forget that the DS version is half a port plus remake. Not to say it is a bad game I like it but I would want to see a new version in the Chrono series over a remake. I have been waiting years for the Chrono Break game and now because the DS version did not sell well that could be the end of the Chrono series.
I would love to see how many copies sell on a new game vs a remake. So I hope the series does not get judged on this remake. Because I still think the Chrono series could sell well. Plus SE could look at may be new people bought CT and think if you get the people that bought that game plus the old fans the game series could do really well.
So I for one hope Chrono Break will some day come out.

Well, it's a weak justification but he is right. Especially considering that it was the first time released in Europe. The sales are bad and it makes it look like another Chrono game isn't financially viable.
It's also the reason we won't be seeing a Vagrant Story 2 any time soon.

It's full of crap yes .that's what it is .
They kept the franchise dead for long , long enough so some fan could finally start a full on 3d remake that looked great and pro . And what did they do ? Did they tried enrolling those guys ?
Did they try taking their work , build up upon it and release a new shiony 3d remake ?
No they killed it instead , and did nothing for even more years .
They didnt release the game on psn or or VC ...
They decided that it would go like this "hey you !! remember when you bought the snes version then the psx versions ? how about i release the snes version + the PSX's cutscenes , along with some touch gimmick and a new crappy dungeon , and you buy it !!!"
Well like i said from the very beginning SCREW YOU (SE that is of course)
They know they're going to do something with it , once they run out of franchise to milk .
Look at Front mission , pretty much everyone could expect it to be dead or remain dormant for quite a while ... yet they somehow manage to pull a new one .... as some Armored core/gundam clone..
It's obvious that whatever that ds game ends up selling , CT will always be considered for a new milking plan . It's that much easier than trying to create new ips
PS :
I dont want a vagrant story without Matsuno . They'd just crap all over it make it an easy game , add some silly romance or new trendy qte stuff .
One glance at the boring looking NIER tells me what would vagrant story 2 be like .
And giving their attitude , i dont even believe anymore in the potential of a Chrono trigger 3 titles without both the original trigger team and the Chrono Cross team .

I agree. SE has the potential to milk FFVII even more but they aren't. Instead, they keep telling their fans no after no even after a really beautiful tech demo. Let's look another 6 or so years down the line. If SE is still around and once they are out of ideas, make the FFVII remake. I'm not sure how many of us are still going to buy it compare to how many will buy it now.
I wish SE understands that opportunities don't like to knock more than once. If it does, I suggest SE answer it.

It's not full of crap though. If they let the fan remake go it would have shown their not protecting their copyright. Which is bad. If they took the remake and tried to improve it they'd have to take up to modern standards and that'd cost money. The game wouldn't sell, they'd most likely lose money.(fan remakes and proper remakes are held to different standards).
That's the point, sure whilst the DS remake can be considered milking(it's really not to me because it's the first time it's been released in Europe, ya know the biggest region in gaming?).
Right so if they made a new Chrono game would anyone be happy if they didn't have the budget of a FF or KH? and if they were trying to get the remnants of the CT team back they'd have to get Kitase, Horii and Akira Toriyama away from FFXIII and Dragon Quest. That'd annoy people as well...
Then if that didn't sell they'd lose loads of money and be behind in their other work. It's a business, not a service.
Sure it may be "milking" but it's gauging interest for the series and obviously the interest isn't there so they're not going to waste money just to have a bunch of idiots saying they ruined the franchise or some sh*t.
EDIT: Yer and if they did reamke FFVII everyone would whine that their milking it and can't do anything original, you know ignoring all their new IPs and just generally whine because that's what people do. whine, whine, whine.

Spoony, I understand what you mean. However, it's somewhat cheap of SE to ask people who already have the game (from it's previous releases) to buy what is almost a direct port, telling them that if they don't, they won't get a sequel. I mean, the game is great, but is it really worth buying 3 times?
And as for Europe, which never saw a release before, people had like 15 years to get it on an emulator, I know it's not right, but if SE decided for 15 years to screw Europe by not giving it a snes game, it truly is their problem. You can't expect people to wait in anticipation for a game for so long.
And sales would probably be slightly better had SE actually actively promoted the game, however, they decided to put some ads on gaming websites. They pretty much aimed their campaign at Chrono trigger fans....who already own the game.

Hell it could have been a perfect fit for VC on the dsi .

Square and a few others play a little game that isnt cute anymore . they often withdraw they biggest stuff from VC consoles and equivalents , so they could pump out more ports , remake or spin offs .
Hell ff7 took a long time to come on PSN , as they probably considered a remake somewhere . My bet is they decided they could always release it , do a spin off again , release a portable remake , then a sequel or a home consoles next gen remake , whenever in dire need of cash .

@V: If they let the fan remakes go ahead it shows their not protecting their copyright in which case anyoen could do what they want with SE's copyright.

What point ? it wouldnt and didnt attract new fans . Why would a kid or new player buy it ?
at first glance any game made for the DS or properly remade for it looks better , and that glance is enough to seal it's fate .
Old time fans then ?
There is only so many time a fan can rebuy the same game without even once a remake so far .
Of course there is always "that audience who heard of the game but couldnt play it before or always wanted to" , but it's so sparse , and even so that version of the game with so little worth would fail to attract them .
If they wanted both that new audience and the old one , they should have worked on first improving the looks , be it like FFIII and IV in 3d , or an upgraded 2d engine . Then figure out some real content and changes .
PS : WTH anyway , Chrono trigger sold well on Snes , in japan it only went below the FFVI juggernaut , and in usa it did a Solid 300k performance as opposed as the FFIII(FFVI) housename with around 800k ..
The psx version crashed and burn , because they pulled the same crap that with today's DS version . Already a port with no worthwhile change , and worse with loading issues .
PS2 : no one is arguing that they didnt have the right to shut down the fanmade stuff . But they were harsher than even Marvel or Bandai (remember they killed that quake fps dbz mode wich look a look like what tenkaichi did) , wich is a quite high level .
But the most important point , is that it showed people cared and wanted a chrono game , it showed them what could be done with it .
ut here they are they secure it as within their rights .... but sit on it .
Just like they will probably do with Xenogears , until the dreaded day , they decide it's time for their take on an official sequel .
And then we'll be lucky if it aint some fps or more action gundam stuff .

http://www.gamespot.com/ps/...
with all do respect baka, you are taking things way out of proportion, the world is not just black and white, I'm sorry. All these great classics your are referring to, XenoGears, FF7 ect, are games that where very much enjoyed at the time and it will always stay that way, any worthwhile sequel to theese great games are just icing on the cake imho. There is no need to expect anything from those games.
P.S. 300k in NA is solid for what is considered one of the best JRPGS ever made? the majority of JRPGs don't sell, an we expect square to keep dishing out new ones all the time an lose money every time? Talk about flawed logic.

Besides household names such as Final fantasy , whenever they were even released (again final fantasy Vi was like the 3rd us one ?) it hardly went beyond what Crono trigger did in usa , wich is a little below half FFVi's us sales .
And it japan it sold quite well . Between FF5 and FF6's figures .

Montrealien, you really need to check facts a second time.
Chrono Trigger was a SNES game that was ported to the PSOne with horrid results. Chrono Cross, which you have in your post, is a game that took another Squaresoft game's storyline (Radical Dreamers) and made it fit with the Chrono Trigger story.
Anyway, 300K for a port is a pretty solid showing, considering how it's a port. If Square Enix isn't happy with those numbers, they should've remade the game instead and actually marketed it like they did FFIII and FFIVDS.

You should warn people when you post stuff like that. I just ruined a perfectly nice white shirt with all the orange soda I spit out after watching that.

Considering SE's current trend of releasing lackluster cash-in spin-offs/sequels, I would rather they not touch the Chrono series. They no longer have the talent/vision to make it right. Hopefully they will some day return to form, and on that day I hope they do start making Chrono Break, but until then, just leave it alone. I mean come on, the motivation for it couldn't be more obvious, blackmailing fans into buying more SE products/CTDS so they'll potentially make a sequel. If the motivation behind development of a new game is purely monetary, not a joyous labour of love like the original, then I don't want it.

Well what do they expect? They release it on a format where (in the UK at least) a large percentage of it's users are either A: Weren't born when it came out or B: Have absolutely no interest in RPGs.
If they released it on XBLA, PSN or even for the PSP, i'd imagine their sales would have been much better.

The platform wasnt the issue . it would have been worse on psp actually
Remember than people play psx and snes emu on it . Sp they'd spit on that particular version .
It's just too little to late to make new people care about a franchise that old IF you do no put some effort into it , either in the game , or a whole marketing plan around it , like an anime , manga serie .

Square is becoming extremely irrelevant. I bought chrono trigger on the ds and it's a solid game but their new titles are extremely iffy. 10 years ago, if someone were to say that square would turn into a sequel/spin off riddled cash cow they would be labeled insane. Nowadays though, that exactly what square is. It's pretty disappointing.

1.1 - No, Squaresoft. The game is a 15 year old title. Not a true new game. Its a remake at best.
And while its a good title, you cannot expect people to buy your old games everytime you put it in a new coat.
Chrono trigger on the DS is irrelevant since the game has come out on SUPER NINTENDO, Playstation 1 and is downloaded a thousand times on the PC by emulator users.
Everyone and his dog has this game. Why should they go out and buy another version? The pool of money is limited but there are a SHIATLOAD of good games to pick and chose from.
I rather have another good game than a game I already own on the SNES.

2 - With over 850K sales for a 7-month old remix...
Square is still disappointed... Honestly I can't tell the SNES version apart from the DS version.
Kudos to Square for coding a remix into the DS without improving anything and expecting cash cows.

Well technically it is the "definitive" version, it contains all the cutscenes from the psx version and it has a bonus dungeon (which ive never used) and it has art galleries and whatnot, but i agree completely with you. 850k and they still want more? This game was probably nothing but profit, i cant imagine the development time for this took long. But who honestly waits and hope for great square games? Besides ff13 of course. Square is becoming extremely irrelevant. Western developers are basically taking over the rpg market and level-5 is shaping up to be a big player in rpg's.
