Microsoft Confirms That Bungie Is Developing New 'Halo'

MTV Multiplayer writes:

In an interview shot for MTV News on Tuesday, Microsoft's head of Xbox business Don Mattrick, confirmed to me that Bungie is indeed working on a new "Halo" game of some sort for Microsoft.

I had been asking Mattrick about the lack of "Halo" news at E3. He said that Microsoft's Monday press conference was already loaded with content and so any announcements for that series weren't needed to get gamers excited.

I pushed him on the lack of presence for the series and asked him if we should be worried about the no-show of Ensemble Studio's real-time-strategy game "Halo Wars." Not only did Mattrick say not to worry and that announcements would be coming, he also said that Microsoft is working with Bungie on a "Halo" game.

I asked for clarification, wondering if Mattrick meant Bungie's project was "Halo Wars" or the long-announced Peter Jackson "Halo" project. Neither, Mattrick said. The Bungie game is something else.

Maybe it will be a prequel. I don't understand why they need to make another Halo though. It was different with Metal Gear Solid 4 since there were a lot of questions unanswered in the previous games. MGS4 wrapped it all up pretty nicely. Halo 3 did that for the Halo series, so what's next for Halo 4?

Is it for the fans or could it be a sign of troubled waters for the 360?

EDIT: MGS4 was also needed to push consoles, no one can deny that. But Halo 4 isn't going to get that many more people to buy an Xbox, so why the need for another Halo? But at the same time, I guess I can ask myself, why do we need MGS5?

Well the series is screwed. HALO is a great series and I really like it.

But here is why it is going in the crapper.

Ghost Recon was a great game. It had two great mission packs. Then Christian Allen gets hired at RSE and craps all over the franchise turning it into GRAW. Tactical play and realism were the first things to go. Now he has been hired at Bungie and will use his hairbrained ideas to ruin another game series as well. I know the guy, worked with him. He is an idiot.

Anyone who watched the credits knows it doesn't end MC's story. It ends the MC/Covenant/Flood (maybe not the flood) story arc.

MC is still very clearly alive, and still stuck in the middle of nowhere on ??? planet. It's very possible they are going to tie halo into marathon, which wouldn't really be a horrible thing.

Also, it could be a non-MC related halo title. more like a front lines shooter as opposed to MC, who was mostly special ops in the games.

Or it could be anything from the books. There is a lot of story left in the halo universe that could be made.

Personally, I think a halo themed combat racer would be sweet. of course it wouldn't fit into the story at all, but it would be fun...

I don't think you are wrong. It is a misunderstanding taken out of context. That guy isn't going to offhandedly reveal what has been kept under wraps and teased with a viral campaign.

Reports have been leaking out that Bungie is working on a previous IP but not HALO. They are advising on 3 other HALO titles - HALO Wars, the Peter Jackson HALO project, and HALO4 in development at Gearbox software.

However, first and foremost people need to go back and reread what the article says. It doesn't say Bungie is developing a new HALO game. It says MS is working with Bungie on a new HALO game. Think about what that means. "WITH" It doesn't necessarily mean that Bungie is developing a new HALO game. It's like saying EA is working with EON on a new Bond game. EON isn't making the Bond game, they are making the movie, EA is making the game. But EON are the Bond experts and EA is working "with" them.

It's the same as saying EA developer X is working with Tiger Woods on the new PGA game. Tiger isn't developing it, but he is working "with" them as an adviser. Which I would guess is what MS is doing. They are working "with" Bungie even though Bungie is not the developer.

it's because it's not regarding the mc but unsc marines (maybe odst's?) it was mentioned earlier that this would be a new trilogy in the halo universe, but would be a completely different series, as well as genre (squad based shooter) bungie probably just wanted to announce it themselves, that's why they're waiting until tomorrow.

Seems like they're going a hell of a lot more realistic and have got the lead designer from GRAW in charge of the new Halo...

I won't diss it yet, because if there's any chance of a GRAW meets Full Spectrum Warrior game in the Halo Universe (they suggest in Kenya) with online 4/8 player co-op, I'll be mightily interested! :)

Down here is South Africa,they never officially released the original xbox.and since the PS1 obliterated sega here,the PS2 was the natural next gen step to take.so while the U.S blasted away with Halo hype, we got blown away with Timesplitters and Red Faction,which both rocked.but last year the Halo hype train hit and everyone went Halo crazy ! Even me. wanted to finish a fight,After just starting it. But everybody liked it I think.me included.offcourse the graphics needed work,but it was k.I for one would love this next game to be both a prequal to the Halo saga with the chief,but. . .also Halo 1 remake attached to it.so you would play the prequal . . .and then they totally tie it in with Halo 1.but u dnt play the chief.alternativly,Halo 3 left some unanswerd questions.lyk that planet where and Chief were drifting too. I absolutely agree. In my opinion Halo1>Halo2>Halo3 - that should be enough of a sign that it's time for Bungie to work on a new IP. It's definitely a talented studio, but I really think that MS has constricted them (and it's their fault too, as they took the money for it).

Lead systems does not mean anything these days. Pretty much every game, except for that dreaded HL2, that is multi looks and plays exactly the same as the other. At the moment the only real argument based on actually facts is that the PS3 will use BR and the 360 will, more than likely use multiple disc. If you want to use that as your argument, go ahead but that would just be grasping for straws.

Anything else is, as I already said, nothing more than blind guess.

firsts off. on one made excuses about the RRoD. everyone know it sucks. but MS put a 3 year warrenty out so that people that had he problem. could get it fixed for free. i didn't see sony do that for the ps2 when people was crying about the dre and sony denied it existed until the class-action lawsuit. but sonyfanboy will make excuses like 'it was a small percentage" or "it never happened to me" yet it warrented a class-action lawsuit and sony had to repair all problem systems for free. did they refund people that paid to have it fixed?NO

what was the excuse for laptop batteries exploding in peoples laptop. 10 million batteries had to be recalled.but it's ok. because sony handle that. what about putting rootkits on peoples PC. thats ok too right. what about having to turn your ps1 upside down to play the game. because the tray wouldn't stay down. all these problems would make people wonder about the quality of sony.

oh an why sony only has a couple of game that are in 1080p. 720 is the sweet spot.

I've had a PS2 since 99,the same one too.Not a problem.

Again,the PS1 comment,i've never had a problem with PS1.

As for the laptop Batteries,no clue.never herd about it.And no clue what rootkits either.

More on topic now WITH THE CURRENT GEN.the small feeble list of things you mentioned are all software related witch are be easily fixed with a patch..Compared to the list of problems with the 360 HARDWARE.Wich are console made problems.Not fixable with a patch.

DMC4-better on PS3,less loading times

I'll make one more prediction tonight...

The new Halo game will have the same gameplay style, art direction and even the high detail of the new E3 Halo Wars CGI trailer(figure of speech but it will be up there with GeOw 2) *5 day War or stand?* I forgot the name but look up the *5 day* something HAlo Wars CGI trailer and tell me if you agree.

If you don't know what I'm taking about I'm saying this game will be mature, dark and a 3rd person tactical shooter with fast paced and large battles with graphics that will be up there with Gears of War with *some* of Halo's traditional vibrance.

Squad based halo game with gamers radio-ing in a a 7 foot Spartan for help after being cornered in a fire fight; I can see a 7 foot super human jumping 6 feet in the air with his sheilds getting hammered guns-a-blazing saving the squad of Marines asses before moving on. lol

Halo 3 ruined the Xboxx 360 for me. I played halo 1 and 2 and like them.
Halo 3 was claimed to be the most amazing game ever made and then I played it. I was so dissapointed that it wasnt better than Halo 2. So I thought ' if this is supposedly the best game on 360 then I dont want one.' So I bought a PS3.
