Netflix comes to the Xbox 360. Did Microsoft just destroy the Apple TV?

If you're a Netflix subscriber and like gaming in any way, drop what you are doing immediately and go buy an Xbox 360. If you have an Xbox 360 and like movies in anyway, go sign up for Netflix immediately. Yes, the rumors were true. Microsoft and Netflix are teaming up to bring its "Watch Instantly" feature to the Xbox 360 gaming device this fall.

With one fell swoop, Microsoft may have dealt its strongest blow to Apple in years. Considering Microsoft also added new release films from the likes of MGM and Universal to its Xbox Live service, the addition of Netflix could render the Apple TV a second-tier living room product.

2 - !!!I have to applaud Microsoft!!!
They really stepd their game up. I mean the conference was pretty boreing, but other than that, if you were to see the things they just announce....it is pretty good. If any one here has a Meez avatar, can understand how fun it is to have avatar. Also, dont care of the new interface is similiar to PS3's XMB or even if it looks gay or kiddish, the whole point of it is that it is VERY user-friendly.

agreed. a little dry at times, don't know how I feel about the avatars, but FF13 and this announcement in particular made it a great day for 360 owners in my mind.

The movies you can "watch instantly" kinda suck. I mean, there's a few diamonds in the rough, like Dexter, but there isn't much. I wonder if they'll start to add new releases? If so then that's great. Hope Sony does the same thing (maybe with Blockbuster?).

I heard a lot of people calling and commenting the PS3 as a moviestation3 or movie player more than game console etc. but none complaining when 360 offers movie downloads and now netflix! so, it's now moviebox360, right?

360 fanatics are funny to call the PS3 a movie player when the M$ is dying to do the same!

3 - I'd say yes
As much as FFXIII may hurt Sony... Microsoft's very Apple like Dashboard along with Netflix and the bonus social networking may well be a far bigger blow to Apple.

It's not like Apple TV was ever really a threat. As archaic as the technology and service is, old school cable is still the biggest comptetion here. It's nice that MS is really stepping up their game, though. At the very least they'll put the pressure on the cable industry and start a price war.

10 - The only difference...
...is that the Apple product is wisper quiet. I don't have the Elite is that any less noisy than the 20gb model? Is the new soon to be released 60gb model quieter or is it the same SKU with a bigger HDD slapped on the side (or top depending on you orientation).

To be honest, I hope there is only one console come the next generation. Both the 360 and PS3 are heading down similar paths but you'd have to get both to get access to all the digital media. Seems like the format war has simply moved away from disc media (i.e. HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray) to which digital distributor you support.

11 - Yeah seems like MS is not just CONCETRATING on just games
they seem to be serious about the HOME MEDIA offerings.

so much content on XBL already. So this is a good partnership.

I expect Blockbuster to do something if they wanna survive.

15 - I think this may only work with the "Watch Now" Netflix titles
This is great news to be sure, but not as great as it could be. I would imagine that right now this only works with the "Watch Now" titles on Netflix. While this may be great for that Care Bears movie you have been waiting to see, this probably wont help you when you want to watch any new, good movie that is just recently released on DVD. Those typically don't have a Watch Now option on Netflix.

16 - Media equiptment room required
Now you only need devise an air conditioned media control room to store the 360 in. Even returned repaired, new dvd drive and cleaned out (assuming new heat sink was also installed) it still is hella loud. You need to have the surround on full blast to mask the jet engine sound while watching movies.

On the plus side at least you don't have to stick in an actual dvd so no need to worry about a deep gouge scratched into your new movie from the dvd drive (even the new drive still scratching disks :(

You guys just cant get it through your thick skulls that just maybe 360 is awesome. I swithced from sony (ps2 never cared for an xbox) im glad i switched (however i would still like a ps3 in the future just got other things first), now we are gona have movies on demand which is wicked sweat. Go Microsoft. Oh and if your such a media person (like myself) then you wouldnt worry about the noise from the 360 which isnt bad cus your theater system will be shaking the room like mine.

online are unlimited depending on what plan you have. If you have the 3 movie at a time plan for about $18 a month then you can watch as much as you want.

18 - AWESOME
I am so psyched for this.

If you don't have NF yet, I'd get it. My wife and I use and abuse it all the time. We're spending way less than we would be renting in-store from blockbuster.

One warning about the IW (instant watch). It's not the whole NF catalog. It's only about 10000 movies, but it gets bigger every week.

If you've been considering an xbox 360, wait a month or so to get a better price or deal. If you've been considering NF, wait until you can use it on your new xbox360. If you've been considering getting the new roku box for your current NF account, forget it and save up for the 360.

19 - That's great..but how will you hear the film over the racket the 360 makes?
I hope MS can work something out so that the 360 runs semi-silently (like when downloading after being turned off) when watching movies. Either way this announcement is a serious blow to the PS3 and especially to Bluray. The convenience of the live marketplace and now with Netflix I don't see why people would really want to buy expensive Bluray discs over watching movies instantly.

20 - Can't wait for this
I have been using the VMCNETFLIX plug in for media center and it is really buggy. I am happy to see that this is finally confirmed and that it is a MS exclusive. Give it some time and we will see HD movies and new releases. I have 3 360's and I have to say that the system is pretty noisy and unreliable but I still wouldn't buy a PS3. Matter of fact if I was given one I would sell it and buy a 4th 360.

21 - Limited selection...
Ummm, for those who aren't quite sure how the Netflix "play now" service works... it isn't available for all movies. In fact, it isn't available for MOST movies. In fact, most of the movies it IS available for are B movies, independent films, documentaries, etc... with the rare gem here and there.

For instance, if you like Wes Craven's New Nightmare or Changing Lanes, you'll be in for a treat. If you like Bowling For Columbine or Supersize Me, you'll also be thrilled. After a while, though, you'll be weeding through films you have never heard of and after watching, won't be terribly thrilled. New movies aren't exactly on the usual list of movies that can be played instantly via Netflix.

Also, for only $99, you can get a Netflix player which allows you to use your existing Netflix account to watch such movies on a television without keeping a computer turned on or hooked up to your television.

So, this isn't exactly ground-breaking. It is definitely a small step in the right direction, however.

Let's hope that by having Microsoft take this service seriously, Netflix may be able to start taking their selection seriously (in terms of instant viewing)... and this can eventually be a win-win scenario for everyone involved.

I've been bummed about no HD on IW since I joined netflix.

However, let's see which of these ideas comes to fruition first, being able to watch NF streaming with your buddies or watching things with your buddies through home.

23.2 - What a twist!
There are about 10,000 movies available to stream for free if you have a Netflix subscription. Of those, about 9,950 movies are ones you would likely walk right past without giving a second glance. Of the 50 you might consider, 30 are really old and you probably already own the DVD by now, 10 are popular documentaries, and 10 just barely make the whole thing worthwhile.
