Console wars heat up for 2008: Sony impresses, Microsoft surprises, Nintendo disappoints

In the two days leading up to the year's biggest video games trade show, E3, it's become something of a tradition that the competing console manufacturers face off in a series of lavish press conferences. Now that 2008's round of announcements, demonstrations, trailers, and posturing are over, which console came out on top?

Microsoft didn't show NO new games..They won because they stole one big exclusive game from Sony that will not come out till the end of 2010..

They screwed all PS3 fans up and Final Fantasy fan in NA and Europe by making us wait for the game even longer..

Xbox360 may get a huge multiplat for each year and few exclusives HALO 4 5 6, GeoW 3 4 5 or a few other rip off games of PS2 and Wii....

PS3 do get the multiplat and they will have a lot of new and old IPs from the first party developers...

Yes they made some 360 fans happy. Square is in for a rude awakening when they spend a great deal of money on the 360 version only to discover how few they actually made happy.

Sony definitely took the show in a very clear cut and commanding manner. Although MS demonstrated a new interface that adds... what to the console? A poor imitation at what Sony and Nintendo already have. A new interface.

Their grand announcement is the fact they will get "A VERSION" of the game that for the past 2+ years has been designed specifically for the PS3 architecture. They didn't score an exclusive, they get a version. If you are a 360 fan that fails to see why FF13 also appearing late next year at the earliest on the 360 is a minor issue and not a great thing, you need to consider this. Just think if Sony's only big announcement had been Bioshock coming to the PS3. Granted FF13 is a little bigger...but not much. And Final Fantasy titles are not game of the year material whereas Bioshock was nominated and awarded by many.

Nintendo's big showing was a game announced 2 years ago. Nothing from their big franchises. Mario and Link both soundly gagged.

Sony on the other hand unveiled one great title after another, showed Microsoft how to do digital downloads, and changed the future of MP console gaming and entertainment connectivity forever.

Their partnership with Google also demonstrates that Sony understands that what happens in the game only really begins to change the community when there is a great way to take it outside the game.

There are a great many 360 fans that will disagree and live in denial but in their bowels they know that Sony brought the hammer down. A great portion of the Sony show was devoted to games that you won't see anywhere else rather than having to talk about multiplatform titles. All MS was Fable 2 and Gears2 - a game with it's 5v5 MP that isn't the stunner it's predecessor was at all. It is difficult to swing a chainsaw when a 300 foot leviathan stomps on you.

Sony haters will rail in denial. Why not, G4 gave MS 3 hours of coverage yesterday and then another two hour repeat today. Do Sony and Nintendo get repeat coverage? Of course not.

Does it matter other than showing us how G4 is a MS backer? No. Sorry, but even unfair assistance in the form of free G4 promotion will not change the facts. Even though they deny it, 360 fans will go to bed tonight knowing that MS and the 360 have been effectively hewed down by a rapidly moving juggernaut. A behemoth, a leviathan if you will, built of superior hardware and a forward looking vision for gaming.

E3 ratings

Sony B+ Could have show more, and should have shown more, but overall good. Killzone 2, Mortorstorm 2, and Socom had a very brief showing. No specified release dates for most of their games, however most of the games shown should come out this year. 3 games shown for release in 2009. Little Big Planet statistics demo was the best of all 3 graph and chart section of the conferences.

Microsoft B- no standout exclusive's but Gears 2 and Fable 2 most AAA games are multiplat. Many of the new features were great while some were boo, FF13 coming to 360 was great for Microsoft (but sucks now that I have to wait longer to play it)

Nintendo D One of the worst E3 showings I've ever seen. no stand out AAA games at all. Nothing really innovative. No price drop or additional changes added to current hardware.

Sony A - They changed digital downloads (by including PSP they are providing mobility and a truer sense of digital ownership for movies)Quite honestly for all the Microsoft crowing about digital downloads being the way and Bluray not mattering, Sony just one upped them with their multiple device maneuver. Sony also leapt into next next gen with web interfacing for games with the Youtube/Google deal. They drastically extended beyond what is possible in a game with MAG and they brought entertainment from outside a game into it with GTTV. They also made a get together more social prior to games as witnessed when you see Warhawk actually launching the team from inside Home after planning around a sand table. There are numerous other announcements as well.

MS C - A grade of C is average and that is what they provided, an average performance. Alone with out considering Sony then MS neither sank nor swam. In light of Sony they sank. Top story was getting a niche MP game. As I said, average.

Nintendo - A grade of D, I agree wholeheartedly. They abandoned, no dumped the hardcore gamers even insulting them in the process. Their lackluster performance reeks of arrogance.

But, It`s now ONLY multiplatform. If MSFT big thing for 2009 was making a game multiplatform, they didn`t "win" E3. MAG was unbelievable and EXCLUSIVE, so is DC MMO and Infamous and GOW3. Over all it wasn`t the greatest. But Sony definitly came out w/ a better showing of the future of their platform.

Obama, the ps3 FF13 version won't be downgraded. This isn't like GTA4. Square have been developing FF13 solely for the ps3 for like 3 years now. They only made this decision to go to xbox 360 a few weeks ago, and aren't even starting the 360 version till after the ps3 version is complete. They aren't going to suddenly dumb down the ps3 version 3 years into development. Theyre gonna continue as planned for the ps3, and find a way afterwards to make the 360 cope with that game = 360 version dumbed down graphically, quality and many many discs. I feel so honored, I NEVER got disagrees before. I guess now I actually said something that pissed someone off. But being completely honest.. I owned the Wii before. And, It didn't do it for me. I gave it another try with Brawl. Didn't cure my boredom. But the XBOX 360 and PS3 has cured this illness. Sony won because they were mature about what they were doing, the final fantasy announcement did have to shake them up a bit, but Jack Trenton, i love the guy he did his best. As a PS3 owner, I came away fealing like M$ sold the show. I feel like I lost FF13 to 360 fanboys even though I didn't. I am still shocked by this. Playstation's press conference was more entertaining and better than the other shows since it was focused on hardcore gamers unlike MS and Nintendo who focused too heavily on the causal gamer (except Jack Trenton's minor mistakes on stage, he is nervous as hell). I personally found that Microsoft's was more shocking with Netflix and FF13 (not the Mii ripoffs, ask Morgan Webb about how much she hates that idea), but there really wasn't anything shown that we didn't know about which was disappointing. Nintendo was the most boring dribble of all 3, where are the hardcore game Nintendo, animal crossing seriously?

In my opinion, Microsoft won with the RE5 demo. That is my GOTY 2009.

RE 5 is great, yes, but its multiplatform.

You can nonly gain greater momentum for your platform by showing what makes your platfrom different to the others.
Ps3 owners can also play RE5, so though it was an interesting showing, it certainly didn't 'win any points'.

i will give microsoft credit for getting FFXIII sometime in the future,but there wasn't anything presented by the company that pushed what they have said over and over in past E3s:"it's all about the games."

but where were the games?there were no games mentioned.more like catching up to what the competition is doing for games and services.or copying games that were released by sony on ps2.

nintendo pretty much did give a f#ck you to hardcore gamers on wii.they had nothing for you.they looked at how harcore gamers didn't help them win any previous gens and said "screw you."they went after moms,grandmas,fathers,little girls,etc.even the presenter stated before jumping on the balance board,"i'm a mom."

translation:all the moms out there,nintendo wii is for us.it's safer than those other systems and easier to play.

sony didn't present a lot that we didn't know but did bring out original IPs that give you the impression that more is coming down the line.they know they have other heavey hitters coming,but decided to hold back to let the fall games get some limelight.which is why killzone2 wasn't given priority over resistance.

games that are obviously releasing beyond next E3 like probably heavy rain,la noire,wardevil,etc.,i think were a no shows being that gamers are getting tired somewhat of seeing something you might not get to play for another year.

but this E3 was pretty bland.no real excitement,average(sony) to boring(microsoft) to outright poor(nintendo in relation to REAL nintendo fans)presentations.

i expect better conferences like gamers day,TGS,etc or they might see less sales and excitement from gamers.i know that i wasn't that excited.it was like going through the motions when brushing your teeth.

I'm getting tired of Microsofts desperate attempt to undermine the PS3. The only game that looks interesting to me is Fable 2. And the only way they think they can get ahead is by "stealing" PS exclusives. What makes me mad is that you have to reduce the game into the lowest common denominator, that being the Xbox 360. I don't know why fanboys are so hesistant to admit the PS3 has the more powerful hardware. I had a PS2 and I knew the Xbox was more powerful, no big deal. You don't see PS trying to "steal" MS exclusives. Bioshock, was always meant to be multi, but MS tried to screw PS gamers with that one. FF13 was one of the reasons I bought a PS3 and I hope they don't have to scale it down because of the Xbox. I've been perfectly happy with the way PS3 exclusives have looked, Ratchet, Uncharted, HS, etc. I like Sony's approach to the future, new IP's. Before, people complained Sony didn't have games, but now they do, and the future looks good. BTW, I rather have Sony use the money that would have been necessary to keep FF13 exclusives on new IP's anyways, I mean we're still getting FF13

You guys are forgetting that....

360 does have new games, who says we only have sequels like fable2 and gow2 and we didnt show anything new at e3 ......We also have games that ps3 will not have also like star ocean 4, tales of vesperia, infinite undiscovery, too human, banjo kazooie, viva pinata....who says 360 has only few exclusives......E3 isnt everything, their are still games undercover that MS hasent let out the bag yet(forza 3, halo4, alan wake, velvet assasin, white gold, warhound....etc.) We may only have halo wars, gears2, and fable 2 to show at e3....but you guys are forgetting......those games are way huge and will sell millions.

This an article about the show. If it wasn't at the show, it din't make any impression and doesn't count towards who had the best showing.

Alan wake is vapour ware and made no differnece to this years show, except by its obvious omission. Ditto for Forza 3 and a new Bungie game. Not seeing these was a big disapointment to me.

If GOW2 and Fable 2 were the only really big first party core exclusives, they should have kept deatils quieter before the show so they made some impact. By the time we saw them at E3, it was old news. Just like LBP for sony - its been rolled out so often now that it doesn't make a huge impact at a show any more. Doesn't mean that these games won't be awesome, but a show like this needs impact titles - new things that generate a buzz. MS didn't have this.

I think Microsoft did very well yesterday and Sony did excellent today. The only winners here are us gamers who get to enjoy these two companies rivalries. Look at how many new features and exciting games we get because of competition. I didnt watch Nintendo so I cant comment on them but big ups to Nintendo gamers too!

Wow, sometimes it really comes down to what kind of fan you are. sony showed nothing new at all....everything has been mentioned before, same games in perpetual development, Home still being developed for years...let's keep anouncing the same things and maybe no one will notice that we still have yet to deliver...anything. I'm sorry but Microsoft won this E3 hands down, showing fresh content (content that moves beyond the mii ripoff, although it seems all consoles are doing the same type of thing) I'll be honest, I have my xbox for a community and that's what they deliver to me every year. Easy to play online and keep my friends together and able to easily share the experience. sony announcing that you can start renting or buying movies online today...360 has had for years. I'm dissapointed, I really wanted Sony and Nintendo to announce something that would be unique enough for me to run out and buy their system. Nintendo has a good Niche, but not enough good games yet. sony has Blu-Ray, however I can buy a standalone player that will run smoother. Overall it seems like sony's focus has shifted and their efforts are on other technologies then finishing something that really could have been great. I'm not sure what Nintendo is doing. while Microsoft is trying to bring about a home experience that to me is working.

If MS showed new content beyond their versions of eyetoy, singstar and buzz, what was it? Portal on live is the only thing that springs to mind... very nice

Sony didn't show anything new? DC universe MMO, MAG, God of War3, New Ratchet and Clank - these were all new to me! maybe you had an inside source that meant you were already aware of these titles?... and lets remember there were also a host of brilliant new titles on psp and huge PS2 support still.

I guess it just goes to show, if your biased enough you can ignore some announcements from one comapny and pretend there were some for another.

You wish to dispute it, please quantify which completely new games titles showed MS had a long term comitment to delivering 360 exclusive games for the core player? I didn't see it.

Sony won this E3 but I am really pissed at the fact that ff 13 will now be downgraded because of the 360. Granted that the 360 gets an inferior port, but perhaps the developers has to remove some features to accommodate the 360.

I hope a giant Panada falls from the sky and crushes MS to pulp. I can only dream.

As for nintendo....

They may suck at E3 but when they do have a game, you have to admit that its top notch quality and always get high reviews in gamerankings.com. Never underestimate miyamoto...that man is a genius!!! Wait till a new mario or zelda comes out or even the undercover kid icarus game....you all will be blown away.

As for the Wiimotion plus and the Wii resort, you have to admit...it was kinda kool and really precise when using the wiimote plus, not even the darwin controller can capture that preciseness....imagine the possibilities with that.....You can make violent games even more accurate when stabbing someone.

Also, Animal crossing will sell like it or not, its rated as one of the 10 ten most addicting videogames of all time.

As i said before, e3 isnt really important....its just a hype machine. The real suprises will come out unexpectedly.

I think its kinda funny how all the 360 users are excited about the ff news when it wasnt long ago when they where saying that they didnt want the game because all it is is talking and not enough action and how mass effect is soooooo much better but now they know its coming to the 360 there all happy lil school girls, now if they stay true to there statement about not wanting the game in the first place it wont sell very well at all on the 360 and will probably make square think twice before they do it again but also if they where all blowing it out of there arses and actually do buy the game then all the ps3 owners will have undeniable proof that 360 users are full of it and where jealous the whole time.So all in all the 360 users have 2 choices buy the game and prove beyond a doubt they where big smelly liars that where jealous or not buy the game and risk not ever getting another ff game on the system again.
