PS3 Fanboy: Final Fantasy exclusivity clarified at Square Enix conference

PS3 Fanboy: "The announcement was heard all around the world: Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox 360? No way! Well, today's Square Enix E3 press conference clarified a few details. First: Final Fantasy XIII is still a PS3-exclusive ... at least in Japan. According to Kotaku, Square Enix exec Shinji Hashimoto told reporters: "I think you are right [in assuming that (the Xbox 360 version) is not coming out in Japan.]" It will only appear on Xbox 360 in English-speaking territories.

In addition, Final Fantasy XIII will release in Japan first -- and then will be localized for the international audience. That means Japanese gamers will enjoy FFXIII on PS3 long before the rest of the world will see it go multiplatform. Hashimoto says that the Xbox 360's large install base in English territories is what led to the decision to make the game multiplatform. Because the decision was recent, there's no way of estimating how many discs the Xbox 360 version will be.

Also, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is still in development as a PS3 exclusive."

Since FFXIII is still PS3-exclusive in Japan, this decision to make it multi-platform in the American/European territories will not have as big an negative effect on the PS3 as we thought (like what 30 minutes ago).

No doubt Japan is THE BIGGEST MARKET for Final Fantasy. Americans like me love Final Fantasy, but the Japanese gaming community buy out all the Final Fantasy games a lot more than any other regional gaming community.

FFXIII Versus is still permantely-exclusive to PS3, so don't go getting the idea to kill youself just yet.

The last FF I bought was part 12 and it was lackluster.

Then again think about it, it sold like 1.5 million here in the States, if any PS2 gamer was waiting to buy a PS3 because of that game, who knows they might change their minds, now that they have another choice with a cheaper price tag and a pretty good library of games and more jRPG's to come.

While I was initially surprised by the news that FF13 was coming to the 360, I stepped back and thought about it for a second. I thought to myself, "Chances are, they are trying to make the most money possible to recoup the huge cost of a game like FF13. It wouldn't make sense to release the game in Japan on 360 because the install base is so low. Yet in the western world it would make sense to release it on 360 because it has a much larger install base than in Japan. Then this news about no 360 version in Japan comes, and I find my prediction comes true. Square is only doing what they can to maximize profit and recoup those massive costs. In this day and age where triple A games cost almost as much as movies, console exclusivity can't be so easily afforded anymore. From an economical standpoint anyways.

I, like many others, was annoyed when I heard that FF13 was going to 360, but I again thought to myself, what's to be angry about? It's still coming to the PS3, the system I had originally intended to play it on anyways, even IF it comes out on 360. I can still play it on PS3 and enjoy it in all it's single disc glory. I just find myself pondering how many dual layer DVDs it's going to be on? o_o

You remember that there was a article where wada said that their first party titles are more important then third parties? You know why he said this? is because sony foreseen this. OH, and dude, ps3 still sells pretty well if it's lightly used, you can probably still get 300+ for it. i say put it on ebay, bundle it with some games and maybe an HDMI cable, you'll be able to afford a 360 easy. Well, Xbox 360 users will probably get a 4 disc version of Final Fantasy XIII (similar to Blue Dragon)and PS3 users will get 1 Blu-Ray with a 5 gig/20 minute install. So in the end, what do you want? Do you want to spend 5 seconds changing out a disc or do you want a 20 minute installation.

On a sidenote, I wouldn't worry about the whole 5 disc FFXIII on the 360 deal IF you've got a big hdd since you'll be able to install the whole thing, and presumably not ask you to change disc just to prove you every part of the game... - Xbox 360 isn't even getting this game till a long time after ps3 owners.
- FFXIII is still exclusive to PS3 in Japan
- And i thinnk they will still use the power of the ps3 like they said before. But will somehow find a way after the ps3 version is developed to find a way god only knows how to fit it on the 360.

So all in all, FFXIII should be as good a game as it was originally meant, and ps3 hardware sales should basically be whatever they were going to be anyway.

they can still take MGS4 and the entire MGS franchise and port it to the 360, however I highly doubt that would ever happen in a million years, but im just saying seeing how Konami is 3rd party.

But yea, games like KillZone, Gran Turismo, Resistance, R&C, Uncharted/Naughty Dog, God of War, etc, etc. those games cannot be boughten. Srry M$, your limited to what you can buy. For god dakes, youve boughten RE, GTA and now FF, i think putting all that money (esp. $50mill. for episodic content for GTA4) should of went to better use, like making more, quality, story-driven, excellent 1st party games and exclusives IPs, instead of wasting money on franchises that are, while still fun, getting old and repetitive.

They said, that there will be no difference in the game as far as the PS3/360 go (besides the disc factor). So if gamers want the "full" FF13 experience, they'll get it on whatever console they happen to own.

If a 1 disc game is the only thing that the PS3 has that makes it definitive, then I'm pretty sure that 360 gamers won't mind too much. There are quite a few people that still don't mind changing a disc every now and then (Lost Odyssey players for example). And as an RPG, FF13 could probably take 10 hours or more before a disc needs to be changed.

good luck ever getting this game. its been in development for half a decade now it seems. so i would like to welcome 360 fans to the waiting game. Especially now that we have to wait for the 360 version to finish since they are both getting released at the same time in english speaking territories.
I am interested even more now to find out what sony has to offer tomorrow. Obviously they have known that square would be doing that, and obviously they know they are going to have to make up for this blunder.
I think its safe to say Sony does not like to play for exclusives. Otherwise this would have been one to shell out a couple of bucks for.

I guess that SquareEnix didn't realize that even though the PS3's install base is lower than the 360's in English speaking territories, people would be buying PS3's by the thousands once FFXIII was released on the PS3 and would be buying FFXIII along with the PS3's, but it was pretty obvious that this was a very recent decision from SquareEnix because nobody saw it coming.

People need to stop saying that they feel betrayed by Sony just because FFXIII ended up on the 360 because it has nothing to do with Sony. Sony has already explained that 1st party is more important to them than 3rd party LONG ago and that they aren't really interested in buying 3rd party games and if you want to be mad at someone, be mad at SquareEnix because it was their decision.

But, at least us PS3 owners still have Final Fantasy versus XIII as an exclusive and what's the use of people buying a Xbox 360 just for FFXIII whenever you wont be able to play FF versus XIII on the 360?

This is the way that I see it, as long as the PS3 has FF versus XIII, Sony still ends up coming out on top when it comes to FFXIII because once people find out that they wont be able to get Versus XIII on the 360, they'll be buying a PS3 so that they can play Versus XIII on the PS3 and FFXIII.

SquareEnix probably wont change the PS3 version of FFXIII just because they are doing a 360 version because the PS3 version has been in development for YEARS.

As far as I'm concerned, the 360 version of FFXIII might come out 6 months- 1 year after the PS3 version is released. I just hope that SquareEnix doesn't end up pushing back the release of FFXIII on the PS3 in the U.S. and Europe just so that they can release FFXIII on the 360 and PS3 at the same time.... To be honest, I seriously doubt that development on the 360 version has even started at all for christs sake and if that's the case, the 360 version is still a LONG way off because developers can't just "port" a game that was built on the ground up on the PS3 to the 360 because the PS3's code is so advanced and more complex.

In closing,this is what I have to say to SquareEnix, "If FFXIII doesn't fill up a 50GB Blu-ray DVD on the PS3 and if it doesn't use at least 4 cores on the PS3 like Killzone 2, you guys have only held back what FFXIII could have been"

The main reason I don't like the fact it's coming to the 360 is because the popularity it will get. The popularity will only make it more and more hyped until there's no possible way it could live up to it. I also don't like liking things that a mass of people like, probably just me. Not a big deal? Over exaggerated? Give me a break. Final Fantasy is a huge huge deal, not too mention the fact that the 360 has started a stellar lineup of JRPG's since the very beginning. So it's not like it's just "another title" in the mix. It's THE title. Microsoft has stayed in the game despite so many losses and predictions of failure and look where it's got them. People really go insane about nonsense on here. FFXIII isn't that big as it is in Japan. RPG's are not an American main stay like FPS and other titles are. The last title wasn't great. Honestly if anything should be taken out of this is SE wants to make money outside of Japan and MS is willing to do anything to try to win. Coming into this Sony had the most to lose title wise and could have made this process a lot easier on themselves. I think we're coming to a point where it turns more into not who truly wins the war but in what ways you improve your company and other aspects. Nintendo could potentially win the war, but no one will look at it that way. Sony won what I think they set out to win right now and thats Blu Ray. Sony has a lot at their disposal yet don't use them as aggressively as MS so you need to wonder what they are trying to do.
