This means that not only will we be able to run 2D-based emulators on the PS3 (IE: NES, SNES, GENESIS), we'll be able to run 3D-based emulators like N64. Although the games out for PS3 are already fun and addicting enough to the point where PS3 users wouldn't have to resort to this like they would have a year ago, it's still a nice feature to have. Couldn't hurt!

2.1 - Yes, it will rock
Yet another reason to love my PS3. I installed Linux about a month after I bought it and it has truly shown me the light and the Windows is not the end all be all OS everyone thinks it is. And with this now it only gets better.
Linux is awesome and I can't wait to see what they do now that they have access to everything!

you just won't be able to that. PC is x86, PS3/Linux is PPC. Emulators, ok. But chances to run WoW on it is infinitely small and will run at 30fpm
I don't think they will be able to use the RSX to more than 2D OpenGL operations. 3D is not in question. I think he's a bit too optimistic, or he's a dev for nVidia. My guestimates
[edit] I have read some more, and they definitely come VERY far with it. I wonder if compiz will be doable in some time. Would be cool. Oh well, my hopes are warming up.

3.2 - Heard of Cedega (wineX)?
That softwares runs almost every Windows game on Linux. I have never used it so no comment on performance. But the fact that it runs so many games cant be ignored.

3.3 - Yes I have.
Have you run that on a PPC machine?
I haven't seen it anywhere. It's very good at what it does on a x86/linux machine for sure. But on a PS3 it's a showstopper.

I installed, but I'm not that familiar with Linux, so I got beat much more than have accomplished anything....
Anyway, I have been for like 7 months without PC, since Januar mine broken and I just have bought the PS3, so totally out of cach. I used the PS3 linux, both Fedora early and then Yellow Dog (waaaaaay better, since it's made for the PS3).
I really have used it for browsing web, listen music, see videos (the few formats that Yellow Dog have support by the time, don't know now), chating on MSN (even with camera) and for another normal application.
I only have installed one SNES emulator and it runs OK, not great, but OK.
I have come back to PC at the moment my sister have a new notebook and lend me her old one. The problem is that I run Guitar Player, and AutoCad here sometime and don't have really find way to put those in PPC Linux... And I also need a Word, cause all my graduation works have to be in Times New Roman or Arial fonts. You can have equal for OpenOffice, but you really will need sometime to test if this is really equal (many user created fonts said to be, but they are not), test sizes, to put this in alignment and see if turn out to be equal on both system... My university is pretty inflexible about getting a formatation that fallow ABNT (brazilian organ for publishising standards) guidelines, since they publishise many of our works. They even obligate us to subimit some works to book editors to get any typo.
But still, I make it to fooled they for 7 months, with the help of my Metodology teacher that uses Linux for sometime now. Still, if you really need some compability with Microsoft formats for your work or whatever, or if you need too userfriendly system, linux can be somewhat screwed...
But, you can install Wiondows XP inside Linux, and than have Windows in your PS3... Still this will get too much memory and will not run that great... But back when I test, we could only take on half the memory, maybe now, with this hackers work, we can have better results in sometime.

@bishop-br
Open Office has support for Times New Roman, you just need to find the package.
Gnome-look.org has it. If you look under fonts, you'll find something called MS True Type core fonts. That'll lead you in the right direction.
You could also copy the font files from Word and place them in the proper font directory on linux. I think that would work.
Regarding the other stuff, I'm sorry but I don't have any suggestions. I've used linux before, but I'm not that familiar with it.

10.1 - There are a lot of emulators that already work
I've had a NES/SNES emulator called SNESX9 installed on my PS3 through YDL for over half a year now and i've played a ton of games on my PS3 including Mario Kart, all of the Mario Brothers games, Castlevania, Zelda (one of my faves) and a lot of others. Oh yeah, Chrono Trigger! Seriously, it helped me out during the summer game drought.

Yeah man, that start was tough... I was playing too many PS2 and SNES games to the point I get confused if have made the right choice... It later turn out to be the right one, but still, wasn't waste of money since I get PC-in-a-room and BD Player (already had one HD-DVD before) from day one, and it made may way to that all glorious hometheater I want and would have just to wait few months (hail Ninja Gaiden Black, before was just Resistance and Motorstorm over and over again) for some great games...
EDIT: Ops... Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

free shooter, with online mod etc...
Level editing has never been so much fun: a press of a key allows you to modify the geometry / textures / entities in-game, on the fly.

This would be great.. If I wasn't already on Ubuntu Linux on my PC...
Which PS3 Linux version would you guys suggest for the emulators? I'd love to see some Killer Instinct, Secret of Evermore, and some Zelda on the PS3. Also, on Ubuntu, I'm unable to use my PS3 controller, I have to have a mouse. Are the other versions like that? It'd be awesome to run the SNES games with the PS3 controller ^_^
