Quake Wars: Ray Traced - new version with enhanced features
12
Intel has updated the Quake Wars: Ray Traced project. Now 500 monsters can be realized simultaneously and the visualization of water with 3D waves has been improved. The new version also delivers support for dynamic objects.
Nevertheless Quake Wars: Ray Traced is still work in progress and a system with two Intel Xeon W5580 "Nehalem EP" processors with 3.2 GHz reaches about 16 fps at 1280 x 720.

1 - It's not that much interesting
I don't know, maybe my eyes are wrong, but Crysis already looks much better than this, and I know there are machines that can play highest quality Crysis better than "16 fps at 1280 x 720".

1.1 - RE: It's not that much interesting
Sure Crysis looks better, but as far as I understood this is run on the CPU and not on the graphics card, so I think 16 fps is quite good.

It's not so much a demo of whose the best looking . It's a tech demo of what's currently possible without graphic cards and with ray tracing instead of the traditional rasterization . The usual version of QW surely wont display 500 creatures at once with 16fps .
If Quake wars is already that enhanced by it , who knows what could crysis gives if they dare and succeed creating a ray traced version .

1.3 - @ Sukru
You are getting this all wrong. It's not what looks better..the engine they are working on is several years old. Crysis no doubt looks better. The thing that sets this apart is a whole new way to create a lighting engine. Proper reflections, low power cost, etc etc. This WILL make games like Crysis look so much better and more realistic than they do now, and with less power.

1.4 - Ok I get it
It's not GPU based.
But then, isn't this downplaying GPUs in order to sell Larrabee?
And btw, DirectX 11 comes with a software renderer, too. Thus it might be less relevant now:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/e...
It's not impressive, since it can only do Crysis @7FPS. However it's designed to "fill in" the missing pieces of GPU, thus your 4870 (DX10.1) will be able to run as a full DirectX 11 card, with small pieces done in software.
Anyways, thanks for the clarification.

Here's what's possible with raytracing (and global illumination and all that jazz). It's an offline render--don't let the FRAPS counter fool you--but it's a similar idea to real-time.

Ray-tracing is pretty cool stuff. 3D Water/Wave Simulation is pretty amazing stuff.

3.1 - Yeah idk what that thing was
It looked odd. The thing is, none of that water was moving what so ever. It was a bump map, but the ray tracing + camera movement made it looked like the water was moving.

4 - so...
not a single screenshot of the "updated" ray traced version or a video? ... I guess we just take their word for it then, why don't they just say they have 1000 monsters onscreen with volumetric water and volumetric smoke since they aren't going to show prove anyway?

Most commenters here don't know what ray tracing is, or why it's a big deal...

I think its great. I honestly don't know much about it, but if this ray tracing stuff is real. It will be real nice to see a fully developed game evolving around Ray Tracing API or something like what will be used in Larrabee. Its nice that Intel owns Project Offset and that game is still going along under development. 2010 could be a big year for Intel if they use this ray tracing stuff and show it off well.
