Google is developing an operating system (OS) for personal computers, in a direct challenge to market leader Microsoft and its Windows system.

Google Chrome OS will be aimed initially at small, low-cost netbooks, but will eventually be used on PCs as well.

Google said netbooks with Chrome OS could be on sale by the middle of 2010.

"Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS," the firm said in its official blog.

The operating system, which will run on an open source license, was a "natural extension" of its Chrome browser, the firm said.

For Microsoft the news comes just months before it launches the latest version of its operating system, called Windows 7.

'Back to basics'

"We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds," said the blog post written by Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management, and Google's engineering director Linus Upson.

Both men said that "the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web" and that this OS is "our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be".

To that end, the search giant said the new OS would go back to basics.

"We are completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates.

"It should just work," said Google.

Google already has an operating system for mobile phones called Android which can also be used to run on netbooks. Google Chrome OS will be aimed not just at laptops but also at desktops for those who spend a lot of time on the web.

"Truly competitive"

The announcement could dramatically change the market for operating systems, especially for Microsoft, the biggest player with around 90% share.

"This announcement is huge," said Rob Enderle, industry watcher and president of the Enderle Group.

"This is the first time we have had a truly competitive OS on the market in years. This is potentially disruptive and is the first real attempt by anyone to go after Microsoft.

"Google is coming at this fresh and, because it is based on a set of services that reside on the web, it is the first really post web operating system, designed from the ground up, and reconceived for a web world," Mr Enderle told the BBC.

Last year Google launched the Chrome browser, which it said was designed for "people who live on the web - searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends."

Stephen Shankland at CNET said the move had widespread implications.

"One is that it shows just how serious Google is about making the web into a foundation not just for static pages but for active applications, notably its own such as Google Docs and G-mail.

"Another: it opens new competition with Microsoft and, potentially, a new reason for anti-trust regulators to pay close attention to Google's moves."

Some commentators said Google's motivation in all this was pretty clear.

"One of Google's major goals is to take Microsoft out, to systematically destroy their hold on the market," said Mr Enderle.

"Google wants to eliminate Microsoft and it's a unique battle. The strategy is good. The big question is, will it work?"

At the popular blog, TechCrunch, MG Siegler said "Let's be clear on what this really is. This is Google dropping the mother of all bombs on its rival, Microsoft."

Microsoft releases Windows 7 later this year to replace Windows Vista and Windows XP which is eight years old.

The Redmond based company claims that 96% of netbooks run Windows to date.

Out of beta

In a separate announcement Google also revealed that many of its most popular applications had finally moved out of trial, or beta, phase.

Gmail, for example, has worn the beta tag for five years.

"We realise this situation puzzles some people, particularly those who subscribe to the traditional definition of beta software as being not yet ready for prime time," wrote Matthew Glotzbach, the director of product management in the official Google blog.

The decision to ditch the beta tag was taken because the apps had finally reached the "high bar" mark, he wrote.

More than 1.75 million companies use Google apps, according to the firm.

Please explain this one to me. Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5, Mega Man 9, they were all multiplat. Where exactly did Capcom change anything? They've always supported all of the current consoles, even back in the 90s (Street Fighter II on Genesis, Resident Evil on Saturn, etc.).

BioWare to the PS3 is the biggest win PS3 will ever get for me other than exclusives. I bought a 360 just for Mass Effect and will continue to buy BioWare's games wherever I have to in order to play them. This is the only third-party developer where I can make such a statement. They have never let me down and based on what they showed at E3 it's going to be a very long time until they will.

The best part about this is if BioWare can put out good PS3 games, then EA will likely take what they've learned and a few of their guys to lead other PS3 developments to ensure the same level of quality on the console. It's a win-win situation, honestly.

They didn't even take advantage of the 360 - they had a mediocre instance of the unreal engine3 on ME1. They'll never wring out ps3 power with that kind of attitude.

I enjoy Bioware games as much as the next guy. Loved KoTOR.

But I still think making the next game an MMO is a bad decision. It could be the best MMO ever. But with one obvious competitor (although the Old Republic is a new MMO rather than a copy cat) I don't see it doing well.

Bioware is starting to embrace the ps3 while Kojima has embraced the 360 as have Square Enix.
There seems to be a trend away from exclusivity and toward multiplats.

In my opinion, it would be terrific if all developers dropped the 'exclusive' loyalty.
That way, we'd all get the best games, on every console, with only the multiplat quality to separate them. If this were the case, developers would gain economies of scale and probably make overall higher profits.

Everybody wins.

In this scenario, I would even be happy to see developers lead development on ps3, then the ps3 would likely shine as brightly as the 360 multiplats.
Like what happened in Ghostbusters, for example.

You know that Kojima is not happy about putting an MGS game on the 360, which is why he stated the true sequel to MGS4 will be on the PSP.

I can't disagree with your sentiment or opinion, but I do disagree with the removal of exclusivity as a whole. On both platforms exclusive titles have shown how bright games can shine and offer us incredible gameplay, graphics, and experiences that truly are unique to the system in question.

Removal of exclusivity will mean less console sales as a whole since people would only buy one, and then people would eventually migrate to just one and then we'd lose the competition that we have now with the 3rd gen consoles.

well as far as i can tell kojima works for konami, which has embraced the 360 wholeheartedly, so yeah, i guess by extension, Kojima quickly fell into line.

Bottom line, more exclusives are now multiplats.

That's good imo.
Saves me from spending money needlessly on multiple consoles.

As far as competition goes, MS and Sony will always have first party titles to keep the exclusives lovers happy, thereby sustaining the competitive efficiency.

In the meantime, i am glad third party devs are waking up to the fact that they can make more money by going multiplat and making all gamers happy.

The PS3 is allmost 3 years on the market and hasn't seen a Valve nor Bioware game, plus others like Activision and Koei are on the edge of jumping the sinking POS3 ship like rats getting of it.

Seems like the 360 will get the 3rd party exclusive threatment like the PS2 got last gen. They go and support one system, so it'll be propelled in larger hardware sales and they can focus on the one version that will be sold the most, while the competing platform POS3 will slow down in sales (which did already itself with the high price and recession in place).

Well think about it... ATM they might make a certain part of their income on the PS3. BUT they'd rather make 90% of the sales on one platform that grows to an installed base of 80 to 100 mln. units out, then on two platforms that both can get to 40 to 50 mln. each untill next gen is here.

Thus: if Activision and some other devs put their big guns only on 360, it gives a kickstart in hardware sales, which makes the software sales on that one supported platform higher and they don't need the platform with the minor installed base anymore.

SOmething like the PS2 got 3rd party exclusive support and we saw what that did. The PS2 got boosted in sales up to where it is now, over 120 mln. sales, while the XBOX 1 missed out on some games/support and stayed around 25 mln. units sold. Still the devs didn't mind about sales on that 25 mln. for certain 3rd party devs because they focussed on the main platform, also cutting costs to program for a 2nd console.

You make the good point with the mass effect game. Unless ME1 is released on ps3 just about everyone is going to get it for 360 (you basically have to for your saves). Question is will there be a "surprise" port of ME1 before ME2. Like some mentioned it would be kick ass to see a ME1/ME2 bundle for like 99.99 or w/e price they'd choose.

Good stuff! Been a fan of Bioware since the original Baldurs gate and Torment. Loved BGII and had a blast with NWN. I could never get into the Kotor games (and believe me I tried! Bought the game 3 times on the Xbox but it just didn't do it for me =/)

I just bought Mass Effect on PC but until I get a newer graphics card it's being borrowed by a friend.

Bioware are an awesome developer.

Does anyone reckon we'll see Mass effect on the PS3? I've heard it's really good. I'm not going to get to play it unless it comes to the PS3, so I'd hate to miss out on it. I don't know if I'd like it though, I'm more of a JRPG gamer. But hell, with all the acclaim from critics and fans alike it can't be bad, can it? Maybe if I get a good pc I'll get a chance to play it. But I love adding to my PS3 game collection and really never buy games for anything but it. I've got a wii with like two games, lol. Whenever I go to buy a game for it I can't help but think "man, this money could be going towards a PS3 game where devs have to put so much more work in. And I'm paying the same price...".

How bad is your PC? Honestly, imo, the first game was a good way superior on the PC and at the time I didn't have anything that great tbh-in fact IIRC just a dual core with barely any memory but it still ran the game a little bit better than my 360 did.

As for PS3 and ME-I doubt by the time they could now get it out(i.e well after PC and 360 have had ME2)the market to make it worthwhile would be there anymore. Besides there'll be plenty to play on PS3 in any case by that time-maybe even FF13 AND VS(ok prolly not!).

I think its fair to say ff13 will probably sell better on ps3. 360 owners tend to lean towards western RPGs anyway which is why ME is so succesful on 360.I consider it the best rpg this gen.

I got a macbook, so it doesn't even support mass effect, and probably isn't powerful enough anyway. Yeah, I know we have our fair share of games coming too. But I hate missing out on anything that great. If I had to miss out on God of War... I can't even imagine.

Study up on how to build a PC or find someone you know who does... You could spend basically the amount it cost to buy another ps3 on a good gaming computer, and if you save up a 800-1,000 you could build a PC that can basically demolish any game that comes out on PC. Once people stop buying computers from the manufactuers and just learn to build it is soooo much cheaper, and tons better. (for 1,000 you could basically build a comp as good as alienware that sells for 3,000-4,000 bucks). Hell the comp I'm on now is pretty old, the graphics card i bought and put in it was 200 at the time I bought it, now you could probably buy it for 40bucks. I can still play most games (play a lot of valve games, cs, left4dead, RTS games, basically whatever). If anyone is to buy left4dead (which it isn't worth more than 20bucks btw, its non stop fun for a few months then dies like most games developed on the source engine), but get it on PC. Doesn't take that great of a computer to run it, and well I don't understand why anyone would play games like l4d, tf2, etc on 360 or ps3 when there easily ran on PC. Oh yeah Sims 3 is badass to! :D /end rant.

Really though let me start up another short rant. If you don't know how to build a computer (I take it you dont lol), or know anyone who does you don't need a ton of computer knowledge to know how. I've not taken any computer classes before (but I will be in college, just currently taking a break from school and not going to college right now for other reasons), all I know is from reading up a lot on the internet. I've read guides, basically anything I wanna know the power of google can teach me.

yes but it makes sense with MGS rising because of the size of MGS4. If MGS rising doesn't have 4/5 discs on 360 it will not be a step forward from MGS4. I agree with you that exclusive games have more chance to turn out better espececially on ps3 since the developer can focus their resources. It's good that they're enjoying themselves developing for the PS3 but I will treat them the same way I treat every other developer developing their first PS3 game.

I always have doubts, I'm a glass half empty kind of guy so when a dev says this and that I'm not going to listen I'm going to wait for their final product and if both games are truly equal and presented at the same time then good for them.

Mass effect was a great game, one of the most memorable rpg's in the vein of a KOTOR, but the game did have a lot of technical problems. The elevators, the pop-ins. Lets see if they have stepped their game up with part 2.

BioWare is great and I agree with Dali that ME was a GREAT game (imo) but there was a lot of tech issues. But they've seemed to really be spot on with the sequal by fixing everything that was wrong with the first and improving everything else. As far as being in the same league as ND and the Santa Monica team, well if they pull off the game with minimal tech issues i feel they'll be able to hold their own against anyone for overall quality.

The PS3 shows true game developing, its for developers who love games and want to develop a complete and fully realised world I mean how can a game not be better when a format can offer 40500mb of extra game data. Long Live BioWare! All the games they have made have been really bada**. From Shattered Steel to Baldur's Gate. They have really proven themselves to be a very good RPG company. I am gald BioWare is pumped to work on the PS3 as its a very good console. It saddens me that most BioWare games were only released on PC and Xbox. Its really hard to believe that MDK2 was the only game they released for the PS platform.

let me down. from Kotor to jade empire to mass effect, Hell I even remember playing MDK on the dreamcast from the Bioware guys. great dev and they have the knowledge to get top quality out of any platform. Will Mass Effect come to the ps3? I sure hope so. Maybe not mass effect 1 but 2 could come in some capacity. And before anyone calls me a fanboy let me say this. You are correct. Bioware have always been primarily a PC developer to me, but it is nice to see them sharing the love with the consoles. Mass Effect had some technical issues on the 360 but that didn't stop it from being an enjoyable game. I am really hoping they will make a Jade Empire 2 for PC/360/PS3. That would be amazing.

i think the reason why PS3 people are saying that MS paid developers to bring "PS3 titles" to the 360 is because, if i recall, it was MICROSOFT who said something along the lines of "we won't be happy until every third party Playstation title is on the Xbox."

didn't they say they had a "list" of "Playstation titles" that they were checking off as they went?

if anything, Microsoft HAS been whipping out the checkbook to secure multi-plats than Sony has.

before this generation, franchises like Final Fantasy, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, etc, HAD been exclusive to the Playstation brand.

it's "A-OK" for Valve to literally give Playstation fans the finger with titles like L4D staying put, but it's complete sacrilege and unfair when MGS4, a game that was quite literally designed from the ground up for the PS3 remains exclusive? (L4D isn't exactly a technical marvel, and could most certainly be ported to the PS3 with minimal difficulty, whereas MGS4 would be a massive undertaking in redesigning and coding it to work on the 360).

i've been a Bioware fan since KOTOR, and bought an Xbox JUST for KOTOR. Mass Effect, while not as good as KOTOR in some ways, was the primary reason why i bought a 360 (that, and Fable 2. Halo and Gears aren't my cup of tea).

i can't wait to play Dragon Age on my PS3, and anything else they may decide to make on the platform. they are one of the best western developers in the business, and regardless of the platform they are developing on, you can guarantee it will be quality.

i say stop trying to pretend that it's ONLY PS3 fanboys that are hypocritical and have double standards. Bioware is for me that what was Squaresoft in the past. A quality-Seal of very high standards. Since the Fusion Square Enix falls down a deep cliff with their Games. I hope this is not gonna happen with Bioware/EA too.
