Google to launch operating system
By Maggie Shiels
Technology reporter, BBC News, Silicon Valley

Google is developing an operating system (OS) for personal computers, in a direct challenge to market leader Microsoft and its Windows system.

Google Chrome OS will be aimed initially at small, low-cost netbooks, but will eventually be used on PCs as well.

Google said netbooks with Chrome OS could be on sale by the middle of 2010.

"Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS," the firm said in its official blog.

The operating system, which will run on an open source license, was a "natural extension" of its Chrome browser, the firm said.

For Microsoft the news comes just months before it launches the latest version of its operating system, called Windows 7.

'Back to basics'

"We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds," said the blog post written by Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management, and Google's engineering director Linus Upson.

Both men said that "the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web" and that this OS is "our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be".

To that end, the search giant said the new OS would go back to basics.

"We are completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates.

"It should just work," said Google.

Google already has an operating system for mobile phones called Android which can also be used to run on netbooks. Google Chrome OS will be aimed not just at laptops but also at desktops for those who spend a lot of time on the web.

"Truly competitive"

The announcement could dramatically change the market for operating systems, especially for Microsoft, the biggest player with around 90% share.

"This announcement is huge," said Rob Enderle, industry watcher and president of the Enderle Group.

"This is the first time we have had a truly competitive OS on the market in years. This is potentially disruptive and is the first real attempt by anyone to go after Microsoft.

"Google is coming at this fresh and, because it is based on a set of services that reside on the web, it is the first really post web operating system, designed from the ground up, and reconceived for a web world," Mr Enderle told the BBC.

Last year Google launched the Chrome browser, which it said was designed for "people who live on the web - searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends."

Stephen Shankland at CNET said the move had widespread implications.

"One is that it shows just how serious Google is about making the web into a foundation not just for static pages but for active applications, notably its own such as Google Docs and G-mail.

"Another: it opens new competition with Microsoft and, potentially, a new reason for anti-trust regulators to pay close attention to Google's moves."

Some commentators said Google's motivation in all this was pretty clear.

"One of Google's major goals is to take Microsoft out, to systematically destroy their hold on the market," said Mr Enderle.

"Google wants to eliminate Microsoft and it's a unique battle. The strategy is good. The big question is, will it work?"

At the popular blog, TechCrunch, MG Siegler said "Let's be clear on what this really is. This is Google dropping the mother of all bombs on its rival, Microsoft."

Microsoft releases Windows 7 later this year to replace Windows Vista and Windows XP which is eight years old.

The Redmond based company claims that 96% of netbooks run Windows to date.

Out of beta

In a separate announcement Google also revealed that many of its most popular applications had finally moved out of trial, or beta, phase.

Gmail, for example, has worn the beta tag for five years.

"We realise this situation puzzles some people, particularly those who subscribe to the traditional definition of beta software as being not yet ready for prime time," wrote Matthew Glotzbach, the director of product management in the official Google blog.

The decision to ditch the beta tag was taken because the apps had finally reached the "high bar" mark, he wrote.

More than 1.75 million companies use Google apps, according to the firm.

and konami, squarenix, capcom, namco, (tekken series)ect. would like to say hello. all use to make games exclusively for the ps brand. now jumps ship. POOR DROIDS. see what i did there. ;)

@TheDeadMetalhead

and droids are still saying. bu bu bu but you still don't have Movie gear solid 4. then when a once exclusive game now goes mutli-plat. droids stop crying. bu bu bu bu that game/dev was never exclusive to the PS brand. LOL

iDystopia5405d ago

lol look forward to seeing those Bioware Exclusives on PS3.

The few multiplatform they decide to put on PS3 will looks better on 360, just like Dragon Age.

TheDeadMetalhead5404d ago (Edited 5404d ago )

@ vega75 - "konami"

So they bring one game to the 360 and suddenly that means they "jumped ship"?

"squarenix"

Oh really? Last time I checked, FFVersusXIII and FFXIV were PS3 exclusive, and FFXIII is still exclusive in Japan. Again, they brought ONE game to 360, and that means they "jumped ship"?

"capcom"

Please explain this one to me. Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5, Mega Man 9, they were all multiplat. Where exactly did Capcom change anything? They've always supported all of the current consoles, even back in the 90s (Street Fighter II on Genesis, Resident Evil on Saturn, etc.).

"namco"

Again, how did they "jumps ship"? Just because Tekken 6 is now multiplat? What does that change? I'm still going to be playing the game on my PS3. It's not like it went 360 exclusive. =/

@Aaron Greentard below - Your name implies that you like PS3, yet your comment bashes both the 360 and PS3. I must admit, I am thoroughly stumped. Nicely done.

I've been a Bioware fan since Kotor on PC. Never owned an xbox console.

Good to know they'll be supporting the PS3 in the future. Hopefully, DA is a great game.

leila015405d ago (Edited 5405d ago )

That's what the Ghost Busters developers said...

I hope it's not just all talk though.

thereapersson5405d ago

Unlike Terminal Reality, Bioware is a trusted developer with an extremely high development pedigree. I'm sure that if they were to make such claims, they would also have something to show for it.

clintos595405d ago

I bet they would be able to generate killzone 2/uncharted 2 like graphics if they ever made an exclusive ps3 game. I can only imagine, but good to see them supporting the ps3, u can bet they will be as happy as EA with the revenue the ps3 will be bringing in for them.

Imagine them putting mass effect 1 & 2 on one bluray & selling it for $99.99 I would definately buy it. :]

JoySticksFTW5405d ago

“It's new. Because we already had experience on 360, that kind of got ahead a little bit, but now we pretty much caught up. Actually it was very exciting. People on the team were really pumped to work on it. They were like, wow. We have a lot of people that like doing new stuff and trying new things, and they were like, wow another platform, can't wait! It's been good.”

We need more dev teams like this. Excited to learn something new and step out of their comfort zone.

FarEastOrient5405d ago

You can add me to he list that would pay $100 to get both Mass Effect 1 and 2 on the same disc. I actually liked Mass Effect better on the PC than on my Xbox 360, probably because most of the problems were ironed out by the time the PC came out.

Christopher5405d ago (Edited 5405d ago )

BioWare to the PS3 is the biggest win PS3 will ever get for me other than exclusives. I bought a 360 just for Mass Effect and will continue to buy BioWare's games wherever I have to in order to play them. This is the only third-party developer where I can make such a statement. They have never let me down and based on what they showed at E3 it's going to be a very long time until they will.

The best part about this is if BioWare can put out good PS3 games, then EA will likely take what they've learned and a few of their guys to lead other PS3 developments to ensure the same level of quality on the console. It's a win-win situation, honestly.

edhe5405d ago

They didn't even take advantage of the 360 - they had a mediocre instance of the unreal engine3 on ME1. They'll never wring out ps3 power with that kind of attitude.

Will be interesting to see what me2's doing in the engine.

Chubear5405d ago

You don't have to imagine it cause that's going to be happening next year when EA brings ME to the PS3 and it won't be $99 either but more like $79.99 for the ME1&2 edition while ME2 will be regular price - BOOK IT! XD

La Chance5405d ago

Cant wait to get the 360 version of Dragons Age.

spongeboob5405d ago

How many times have we heard this from developers only to be let down time and time again. I will hold my excitement for when i see the proof, thank you.

meepmoopmeep5404d ago

Greg Zeschuk, said that the team's found developing on the PS3 "exciting"

:)

Marquis_de_Sade5404d ago

leila, please don't mention Terminal Reality in the same sentence as Bioware, unless of course you're talking of how much better Bioware are. KotOR and Mass Effect are two of the greatest games I have played, gripping story lines and sublime gameplay, you could call me a Bioware fanboy I suppose.

Anyway, to the topic in question, it's nice to see a developer with such a good attitude towards learning something new, kudos Bioware!

evrfighter5404d ago (Edited 5404d ago )

Come on people. Most of you are stuck on graphics more than anything else. With Bioware expect to play great games with them. Just don't expect any technological killers from them. You'll only disappoint yourselves.

Bioware makes great games not tech demos. IMO they are the saving grace of rpg's this gen. This is why Star Wars: The Old Republic is going to be an mmo unlike any other.

beeeffess5404d ago

@1.13

I enjoy Bioware games as much as the next guy. Loved KoTOR.

But I still think making the next game an MMO is a bad decision. It could be the best MMO ever. But with one obvious competitor (although the Old Republic is a new MMO rather than a copy cat) I don't see it doing well.

That's not to say I want it to be a failure. I want it to do well. I'm sick of chore-like MMO grindfests.

aaron58295404d ago

Bioware is not known for graphics... they are known for the gameplay.

So, to me, graphics arent important... even on multiplats, i can live with the usual "washed out" or "blur" graphics, just as long as it performs smoothly.

I cant stand frame rate drops.

How'd fallout not make the list. Atleast over cyberpunk, tales , and halo. Fallout been around since what 96 98 and has 5 6 games into it. It's full of lore when you play it. I'd even add star ocean to a point.

robtion480d ago

Agree Fallout should be on there.

MadLad480d ago

And somehow Planescape Torment doesn't even make the list.

Crows90480d ago

Hollow knight surpasses these.

shinoff2183480d ago

In lore? I must be missing something

Crows90480d ago (Edited 480d ago )

Yes in lore. Easily missed... absolutely. Never played a game that had me loving the world and lore behind it as much as that one. Most of course wouldn't be able to experience it since it is a more difficult game.

DarXyde480d ago

I can't speak for all titles on this list, but by the time you get to Dark Souls III, the lore is a bloody tapestry of intricacy

Crows90479d ago

Played them all. Im not saying the games on the list dont have good lore...I just think hollow knight had more lore that is hidden but present and more easily explored and accessed. The souls games have tremendous lore but theyre mostly hidden and stay that way unless you look for it and research it. The lore is not very accessible.

DarXyde479d ago

Crows90,

I think that's a somewhat fair assessment. For me, the Souls games are less upfront about the lore, but it does invite your fascination through NPCs, items, locations, bosses, etc. There's this kind of natural progression where the picture becomes just clear enough by doing the essential tasks, but it really makes you want to explore every inch of the world.

TheColbertinator480d ago

Suikoden and Legend of Heroes also have massive lore setups.

agent13480d ago

narration is more important than lore i'd rather watch the story and characters in a more cinematic way instead of searching for notes and stuff that's why i love sony exclusive games like uncharted and gow and hate from software games

shinoff2183479d ago

The article was top ten lore in video games. I think they did a bad job picking games out. I know what you mean though. I just like a variety of games and genres.
