Wipeout HD - The retrospective had me thinking about just how well this game fits in with the Wipeout series, apart from the locked in the attic when guest are around abomination that was fusion (might be being a bit harsh here). The first thing that irks me is the name. The name of this game STINKS to high heaven of marketing lingo. HD. You mean that resolution lower than I have on my 10 year old crt? You mean that, that thing you want me to buy? Well I'll stick to my own resolution thank you very much. It really gets to me when the sales gibbons at a company are allowed to have their way to pollute a game. This really gets to me. Its like eating a really nice cake but its shaped like a penis. Thanks, great cake. Too bad it makes me gay I eat it. If I am to pay R500 for a game, there had better not be a single thing about it being polluted by your marketing something ELSE on it. I am here to buy Wipeout, not another TV. That being said, he game itself is, apart from the multi-player, every bit as good as the rest of the fusion-free list. It handles similarly to what I'd call a cross between pure and pulse, with the maps being more akin to pure. On or 2 new tracks, and all the old good ones.
There have been some additions, like zone battle, which is basically competitive zone but your only weapon is a hexagonal obstacle that you drop. The objective is to land as many boost pads as you can to increase your zone energy which you can then use to drop an obstacle and speed yourself along to reaching zone 100. So basically, its a race to be the fastest and to drop either as many hexagons as possible after hitting as many boost pads as possible or if you have failing to hit pads, conserve them for as long as you can to boost up to a faster speed. Just like all the previous Wipeouts its not going to coddle you. Zone battle is hard, but winning a zone battle is on the same level as beating someone at a high level dota match. If you win at a zone battle, its most probably because you deserved it.
Zone battle is a big plus in my book, the other new mode however, and I hardly even want to call it a mode, is hardly even worth mentioning, if anything it detracts from the game, you basically steer a funny looking car around a track and blast clumps of randomly spawning energy out of your way. Its not really worthy of being labeled wipeout. So far we seem to be off to bit of a rocky start. The name stinks, and its got a mole on it's face that should not be there. Its not all lost though, because the sheer thrill ride that is wipeout manages to show through the mud that sony smeared on its face.
The graphics, at first glance look a bit plasticy, like how doom and call of duty 4 have the sense that matte is a thing of the past, and that demons, marines, terrorists and russians all glow like they are pregnent. This is the impression I got from the trailers : Then I saw the game. I cannot stress just how well studio liverpool did on this one. The game looks absolutley amazing. Its a wonder that they went to the effort of putting just this much detail into a game that moves so fast, it makes quake 3 feel like the decay of carbon 13. The level of detail on the tracks is astronomical. Its the 3rd prettiest game I've seen in my entire life coming in close behind Mirrors Edge and Crysis. There are only a handful of games that I consider to be truly beautiful. Total Annihilation for its fluidity. Crysis 1, Crusader : No Regret, Mirrors edge and Wipeout Hd. The mud on it's face and the mole that is the new mode can be completely overlooked for the sheer brilliance of the rest of this game. Its got everything a wipeout fan could possibly love. Amazing music, pulsing textures on the tracks, high speed and its all done with style. Its a punch in the face to Devil May Cry. It makes Dante look like he shops at Walmart. It runs like a dream, the competitive online multiplayer is amazing, I spent hours in zone on sol 2 before I went online just so i would not end up looking like it was my first Wipeout game. I love how all wipeout maps are designed (possibly accidentally) in such a way that they allow you to abuse the sides of the track as a place to race, its like strafe-jumping, or skiing from the tribes universe, they might not have meant to put it there, but that does not stop it from adding a whole new dimension to the game.
The game does not feel restrictive, it awards skill above all else and that is what makes it a true member of the wipeout series. The split screen. Well, lets not even go there. The PS3 has failed at this mode, don't bother. It does not matter though, because you can compete online now. But who needs another player fouling up the view of your Harimau on your brand new HD screen you bought for some subliminal reason? The game is as stylish as anyone could have hoped. It has a few lumps in it, but its worth your time and money. As a gamer you owe it to yourself to play this. The only thing I wish I could do is rename it so that it can look pretty next to my other wipeouts.
\Its a VERY pretty version of wipeout, though it has a wart, but you don't have to look at it. I wish there was a mode faster than phantom. Harimau forever.
YouTube channel Cycu1 has created a video which shows us a side by side comparison of WipEout Omega Collection (PS4 Pro) and WipEout HD Fury (PS3).
Damn, the rez and textures its huge. The image is so Sharp!!!! and this game was already very good on the Ps3
Was 1080p 60fps on ps3.
This isn't just a resolution bump it's a complete rework.
First thing I'll do is beast zico on anulpha pass..
I am soooo happy to have wipeout again I was afraid it wouldnt return again. Cant wait
My neighbors are gonna listen the soundtrack.
Whether they like it or not.
TGH Writes: "A soundtrack is what brings the game to life and fills it with memories, it’s also what separates an average game from a great game. You won’t see any must-play titles having lacklustre soundtracks, it’s all integral to the experience.
So, without further ado, here are my top 10 video game soundtracks – and I can promise you that it’s not just your generic list of games you see on everybody else’s top 10."
God of War series, Alan Wake, Mass Effect series, Bioshock series, Oddworld AO & AE, Castlevania: LoS, Oblivion, Fable 1 & 2, Deus Ex: HR have my favourite OST's.
