A great game which is worth every ps3 owner's time

If you are like me and are sick of the slew of short (12 hrs or under) games coming out on consoles, then just remember that uncharted is no different in this department. It can be beaten rather quickly, so if you have not played it you may be better off hiring this bad boy.

That said, what you get is quality over quantity. I'm not going to repeat what all the official and respected (some not so much) review sites have written about concerning Drake's first adventure, but rather am going to focus on what I found to be some flaws in an overall fun and visually stunning title.

1) Enemies take too many shots to die. This was probably my biggest annoyance. The action is so frantic and comes at you from 360 degrees, so trying for headshots all the time can be difficult. Besides the shotguns, other weapons take two to three more shots (bar enemies in the levels 1-3) than i feel is appropriate.

2)Aiming recticle can be hard to see, especially if you aren't the one playing. A minor problem, yet made me wonder why Naughty Dog decided to remove the "crosshair turns red when aiming on a bad guy" function.

3) I don't know about others who have played it, but sometimes aiming is a little off. Headshots are the only place where this becomes an issue. I found a lot of hits to miss completely. Only when i aimed for their neck did it seem to result in a HS.

4) Would have loved some melee weapons. Always Uncharted 2.

5) Puzzles are ridiculously easy. Those focus testers who told Naughty Dog they were too hard deserve a slap or two. Then again, maybe too much head trauma was their problem to begin with.

6) Platforming could have been more original and challenging. I still enjoyed it though.

7)Hand to hand combat was great fun, but I do hope the sequel has proper combos, or perhaps a wider variety of contextual kills as a compromise to an actual move list.

8)Only one boss fight

9)It ended

All these problems are minor when contrasted to the whole gameplay experience that is Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The controls are tight, the gunplay is engaging and challenging and a few superman punches and running dropkicks are sure to leave a big childish grin on your face. Vehicle missions are a bit few and far between but as a result stand out even more as a welcome change from on foot sections.

The story is easy and enjoyable to follow, mainly due to the terrific voice acting and facial animations in the cutscenes. It may hardly be original, but the plot fits the tone of the gameplay (not overly violent) very well.

I have replayed the game more than once, so there is replayability. The awards unlock some useful bonuses such as one shot kills (negates my major criticism with the game haha) and unlimited ammo.

Lastly, if you want to show off your ps3 to friends, keep in mind that this game is pretty. Especially in high definition. The textures and lighting are enough to make you stop and 360 degree the camera in order to take it all in.

If you have a ps3 and haven't played this game, what on earth are you waiting for?

Score
8.8
Graphics
The gun fights are great, but everything else isn't of the same quality; especially puzzles
9.1
Sound
Outside levels are the most stunning, but poor smoke effects and minor defects here and there prevent a higher score
9.2
Gameplay
All areas are great, except the ak-47 once again sounds a bit weak (gta SA anyone?)
9.3
Fun Factor
For a reason that can best be described as "greater than the sum of it's parts", Uncharted is a really fun experience. You feel like an action hero and an everyman at the same time. It is over a bit too quickly though and has limited replayability.
Overall
8.9

You feel like an action hero and an everyman at the same time.

Great statement, sums up the experience perfectly.

Milky5911d ago

This is personally my favourite game for this generation of consoles.

I don't have many PS3 games yet but as far as exclusives for the PS3 it is right behind Ratchet and Clank.

The Inconsistent Harmony: 5 Examples of Ludonarrative Dissonance in Video Games

VGChartz's Issa Maki: "I finally have a proper designation akin to what I've always referred to internally as 'the line that must be crossed' or 'The Line', for short – ludonarrative dissonance – the separation from a video game's story in relation to its gameplay. Why isn't PETA all up in Mario's grill for jumping on turtles and killing fish, or charging Samus Aran with the extinction of the Metroid species? Ever notice how fire has that habit of making bosses in Resident Evil stronger? Read on my friend, for I endeavor to imbue you with the ability to engage in basic queries concerning the concept."

UC 2, 4, 3 and 1. Great read and article

ABizzel11020d ago

No Golden Abyss -_-, otherwise I agree with the order.

UC2: Best overall
UC4: Best graphics, best gameplay, best locations, best environements
UC3: Best set pieces IMO (the boat and desert fights will always be amazing)
UC1: A rough Draft of what was to come
UCGA: Basically UC1 on Vita

Great list and great article nicely writen and explained. Although for me personaly i would put Drakes Fortune above Drake’s Deception and Uncharted 4 is absolutely my favourite of the franchise and number 1 for me.

U2 is the only game playable on crushing without causing a great amount of frustration. Not to mention just how much influence it had that they redid some of U2s set pieces like the caravan twice, and armored truck chase in U4.

I'd rate it as the following.

1.) Uncharted 2
(Close to perfection of any game I've played in years. Single Player/Multiplayer/Co Op all amazing.)

2.) Uncharted 3
(On par with UC2 multiplayer/co op wise minus the kickbacks [aka killstreaks]. I really liked the Lawrence of Arabia story.)

3.) Uncharted 4
(Single player is amazing. Multiplayer was meh. Co Op had potential. Absolutely hated the health revive system it slowed down the game way too much. Always preferred the fast pace action of UC2/UC3. Made it way more fun that way. Recoil was too ridiculous that most people in lobbies would only do hip firing, using power weapons and using that OP grappling hook to melee people after dropping them. Nobody wanted to revive anyone.)

4.) Uncharted
(It's the first in the series so it's hard to judge. Though I loved the story.)

I agree here but it’s also a series you can play from front to back and truly enjoy. Story-wise, they are all great and flow so well. I wish they threw both Golden Abyss and Lost Legacy on this list. Lost Legacy is the best mechanically in my opinion. You can see it’s stepping stone framework for TLOUS2.

Michiel19891020d ago

uncharted 2 is one of the few games that actually surpassed its pre-release hype.

medman1020d ago (Edited 1020d ago )

I am a single player gamer...I barely ever touch a multiplayer component. The only exceptions over the years have been the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, TLOU factions, and the Uncharted 2 multiplayer. The Uncharted 2 multiplayer saw me spend more time playing it than all my other multiplayer experiences over the years combined. That game really was a masterpiece all around.

brando0081019d ago

I agree completely, those are all stellar MP experiences, coming from another SP gamer who only occasionally gives MP some time.

Gardenia1020d ago

Come to think of it, the step between Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2 is huge. It goes from the weakest in the series to one of the best games ever made.
I think I'm going to play all of them again soon.

Ninver1020d ago

Yeah all of a sudden I've got that Uncharted itch.

Michiel19891020d ago

is multiplayer still up for the remastered trilogy? or did it never have UC2 mp?
