I came into Resident Evil 5 with an open mind (having never really played through the first four) and high hopes (having read about it quite a bit).
In my play-through I played co-op with a friend of mine. And it worked really well. The game was obviously made to be played as a co-op experience. But it was so well done that it never felt forced upon you. One of Valve's newest games, Left 4 Dead, is a good example of this. While being a fantastic game, it had the dependency of having to have human players in order to win on the harder difficulties. The subtle inclusion and the way the two of you could play almost independently, but chose to work together to win makes this a beautiful close to this part of the Resident Evil series (which includes Wesker, whom I learned about).
The graphics in the game are what can be expected of any game at this point in the console's life. They aren't terrible, but they aren't particularly beautiful. They're adept. The music in the game is also good, but nothing special. It keeps with the atmosphere. However it hasn't ever taken me where I sit back and think, this is really cool music.
The controls also work pretty well too. The quick access to your weapons through the D-Pad make the game a bit less clumsy than the previous versions were. The Melee attacks were well done as well, on both the AI and on Chris' and Sheva's side. It was also nice with how the weapons and finishing moves were made distinctly different. You can tell Capcom put in a lot of play-testing into this game. The in-depth weapon upgrades and the variety of weapons make the game feel original every time you play it as well.
Being that these enemies weren't technically Zombies, broke a bit with the norm of the games (I realize RE4 enemies also weren't technically Zombies). And they were fairly intelligent, and quite varied. However I found the classic enemy's of the game were the most feared. I.E. the lickers. When my co-op partner and I first came upon the Lickers we were scared out of our minds. The fear instilled in us from the previous games, came through here. However, the enemy's that were armed with firearms felt like a thin veil of an excuse for there being enemy's who are shooting at you. Which leads to my next point, the Replayability of the game.
This game, is so fun and immersive that there's an intense urge to play the game again. The fact that you get to keep your weapons and ammo from other play-throughs (which includes all upgrades) is very cool also. However the only major obstacle to playing the game again, are the bosses. The bosses feel not so much like bosses but the game, and therefore the developer's, saying "Hey, you have too much ammo, here's a reason to use all of it." Instead of making them feel like an integral part of the game.
Resident Evil 5 launched 15 years ago today - and it continues to stand as a stepping stone from the good to the bad.
One of my favourites because of the co-op. Then Resi 6 arrived and the series nosedived further.
I enjoyed the game co-oping with a friend I know the game in solo the AI can be an idiot but RE5 is way better then RE6. I played RE6 with a friend if it wasn't cheap when I got I would have avoided RE6.
5 was excellent, still play Mercs with my brother.
I would love a fully remastered RE:5, with some added, reworked content. The DLC for 5 was also excellent.
6 was awful.
I never understood why the game was misunderstood. It was a fantastic game at launch and is still fun today to play. It’s as action packed as Resident Evil 4 was, yet that’s regarded a masterpiece 🤷♂️
it was "misunderstood" because they introduced co-op into the franchise at a time when people loved to have fake rage about co-op. like, you could play the game as a solo experience, but people chose to have their bandwagon rage because it was cool at the time lol
An exploration of whether RE5 is truly the most logical next step for a remake, or whether there are others in line who deserve their day in the sun.
Remake of Resident evil outbreak as well as file 2. Same gameplay as the recent remakes. Choose what ever character you want to play as. With online co op.
Nope.
Rather remake other past Capcom & non-mainline RE games ... IF they have to continue churning out Remakes.
I'd rather want a new 3rd person RE spin-off
Dino Crisis and Onimusha Reboot
New IPs after Pragmata ships
Though CAPCOM has been hitting it out of the park with their Resident Evil remakes, fans are rightfully skeptical about RE:5.
I just think Capcom have finally got back on track survival horror wise and if they remake RE5 they will most likely make it a full blown co-op game again where they'd be repeating their mistakes with the original RE5.
The original RE4 came out and it was a universally praised game so when they announced a new one people thought they would add onto the good things RE4 brought in and maybe add a touch more horror as RE4 was more action like but still found a good balance. However RE5 didn't, they upped the action, got way more ridiculous and added co-op where if you played single plater you were forced to have a shitty AI follow you around and baby sit. It wasn't scary at all.
They even got rid of RE4s hub like areas (Village - Castle - Island) and had some sort of mission by mission gameplay where you could only buy/sell weapons at the end of the completed mission, it was very chapter select like. It just become so generic and action like, even the puzzles had been cut back, just replaced with a lot of "two people need to operate this, work together" moments which is not fun single player.
Also story wise, the fact we had Ada's betray at the end of RE4, something they doubled down on more in the remake where she decides to not give him the master plagas sample, we find out in RE5 that he has some form of it anyway, he just went to the Island himself and got a sample of Krausers body instead, you know the Island that blew up and most likely had Government officials crawling all over.
I'd prefer it if for the RE5 remake they go more off the RE4.5 concept art, change the story, keep it single player, deviate from canon and create a brand new RE5 featuring Barry, more Jill, Zombies, Tyrants etc like it was supposed to. If people really want co-op then ask for a Outbreak remake, its the perfect game for it.
RE5 is a good co-op game but it's a bad Resident Evil game
Based on the ending of the RE4 remake, it looks like the RE5 remake is the next game, which I’m excited about. RE5 is my favorite RE game, and I could care less about all the hate it gets
It'll be better than 6, that's all i know. RE5 was actually good, but not a real RE game. With the whole woke thing nowadays, this won't be able to be in Africa like the original.
I love RE5 and I definitely want a remake! Updated controls and some changes here and there like the 4 remake. They should definitely keep the Africa setting. And Sheva is awesome 👍🏽
I loved this game - especially the opening level, but it fell apart in the 'reeds' section.
This sentence is wrong. The graphics are one of the best this generation mate.
I would have given 10/10 to the graphics.
The boss fights are fun and some of the bosses are incredible huge and scary.
I love this game, because of the variety. You get to fight against: Many different Majinis, Reapers, Dogs, Chainsaw maniacs, Lickers, huge creature + more.
Good review, and I agree on a lot of your points, and they actually mirror my thoughts on most too(Which I will put into review form somewhere down the track).
Firstly, the enemies, it was a strange thing, I agree the lickers were very good and really enstil fear in you from the first moment you see them, and you always feel like your going to need some luck to get out of it, the other enemies, especially the majini's with the guns make the game feel a bit forced, as if they said "Well the enemies are like 'zombies' but they can't be completely brain dead" and it leaves an awkward stage where you get smart enemies(One's that can still drive vehicles and shoot weapons competently) and just plain stupid enemies who can do nothing but walk up to you and grab your face, although I will say the evolution of enemies works well(In that you face a good variety just as it starts to get tedious with another enemy).
Boss battles I really do agree with, some are good and fun and I loved the flamethrower battle, that was brilliant, but overall the majority are too use up 1000 bullets and it dies, and the biggest issue too is that half the time your not even sure if your doing the right thing because the boss doesn't really react to the shots.
Graphics are a tough one, at points it has some really great looking graphics and I LOVE the fire effect in this game, probably the best I've ever seen in a game, but then there are points where the game just looks meh, the water has to be the main point there, haven't seen much worse water before in a game, also there are a a lot of dev cut-backs that I noticed with the graphics too, whether this is for hardware or time or money reasons who knows, but there are a lot of things you can point out that is fairly shoddy.
I will say this, your very lucky you played in co-op with a friend(I have done both non-friend and friend co-op) and the NPC friendly AI is shocking, one of, if not the worst I have ever played with, and it is really limited too, so if you replay the game, try not to do it with the NPC friendly AI.
