Fear Reborn. Only not of in Game

Fear Reborn. Only not of in Game
When Capcom announced it was going to be bringing one of the most beloved games of all times back to life with a "fresh" HD remake fans of the series rejoiced. And when Capcom actually released said game, those same fans cringed at the game's "HD" remake. BEFORE YOU CONTINUE READING YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT I AM NOT REVIEWING THE BASE GAME. I AM REVIEWING THE HD REMAKE.

Graphics- 4/10

This is the biggest disappointment of the game. The "HD" revision is really quite sad. It's extremely difficult to describe how a game goes from being Standard Def to High Def, since most of us remember a game with better graphics than it actually had looking at an HD remake night not actually look any better. So for this review I'm just going to say the good and the bad. Most of the characters look good, and Leon actually has brown hair on the Island. This is where most of the HD went. However while the characters look relatively good the rest of the game still looks extremely out dated and poorly textured. The wooden stock on the guns is a combination of four or five square patches of different shades of brown. Guns are solid gray squares with different shades of gray to outline different pieces. But with no sharp and defining lines the guns mostly look like solid squares of a single color. Everyone's hands look like oven mitts. There's not sharp lines to define borders and the square pixels used to make objects bleed outside of the object and into the environment. There's screen tearing, texture pop in, and blurry images. As far as HD remakes goes this is relatively poor graphics wise. This fact is proven by Capcom skimping out on retexturing the cut scenes in Separate Ways. Capcom just copy and pasted the same cut scenes straight in this "HD" remake. These are in fact the same cut scenes from the original version, not updated, not retextured, and not recalibrated for a different aspect ration. Let me talk on that for a min. The game is set to a 20" aspect ration, always. I tried it on my 17", my 32", and my 55" tv and every time I started the game for the first time it was a 20" aspect ratio. This can be changed in the settings menu and stays that way, but when you change it, it stretches the Separate Ways cut scenes until they are unrecognizable blobs.

Sound 7/10

Lucky they didn't mess with the sound. All of it is the same as it was the first time around (Hear that George Lucas, not changing things is good.) I would have liked to see this game get put into surround sound so when your wearing gaming headsets you could listen for the enemies. My biggest complaint in this section is that there are no subtitles and no way to turn them on. I know some gamers like them on, some gamers like them off, but when the developers don't even give you a choice it angers me.

Story NA/10

I can't rate this as it didn't change from the base game, and as I said in the intro paragraph I'm not reviewing the base game. I'll just give a brief the story is good but a little cliche.

Game play 5/10

The game play hasn't changed much from the base version. They did add a new control scheme that makes the game play a little more like RES 5, a positive in my opinion. You would think that with the "update" they would up the Frame rate and stop the shuddering. But again, they just ported the game straight over. The Frames are still terrible, the controls are still stiff, and the game still has noticeable slow down and shuddering when to much stuff is happening on the screen. This is not good. The Xbox360 and PS3 are much more powerful than the Nintendo GC and the PS2 were. The HD remake shouldn't be having these problems. On the subject of the Base game I can't quite figure out what the Base version is. On the GC version you got tons of ammo but not enough money, and on the PS2 version you got tons of money but not enough ammo. However on the HD remake you didn't seem to get much of either. I liked this because it made the game much more of a survival horror rather than just a straight action game.

Online- 10/10

Ok, let's get this straight. I'm not giving this a 10/10 because it has a super awesome, COD killer, multiplayer mode. In fact the game doesn't even have a multiplayer component to it. It didn't in the base game and doesn't in the HD remake. What it does have is an online leader boards. This is a good way to include competitive multiplayer without needlessly adding a multiplayer.

Overall- 5.5/10

This "HD" remake is less of a remake more of just a straight port of a good game. It's really sad what happened to this game. Capcom took a good game with a good reputation and used that to make a quick buck selling a terrible port. At $20 I can't recommend this remake to anyone. For the PS+ people $10 is still a little more than it's worth but acceptable. The only saving grace of this HD remake is that it's Resident Evil 4. If it wasn't this HD remake would be unplayable. If you've never played RES 4 you owe it to yourself to play it, but only if you can find it for under $20.

What do you mean you are not reviewing the base game, that makes no sense, that's like saying I give Michael Jackson 1/10 but I'm not reviewing his singing just his new nose job.

You don't seem to understand what a game review means. You can't review it and leave the actual game out of the review. This is honestly one of the worst reviews I've ever read, it's such a confusing mess.

akiraburn4601d ago

I think what he meant was that this is more of a review for old fans of the game that want to know how it technically stacks up to the original, and if it warrants a purchase. I'm inclined to agree with a lot of the reasoning, and even some of the scores.

I have to say though, I actually think audio should receive further criticism and possibly a lower score because listening to any dialogue and even some sound effects that happen when you aren't in a cutscene of some sort can sound awful.

What happened was that back on the Gamecube, since the disks could only handle roughly 4GB, they had to compressing many things, the biggest and most apparent ended up being these audio files. So if you listen to something like the merchant when he says "Welcome" or "Hahaha, take care", you'll hear it sounds like he's underwater. Same thing happens with some of the larger sound effects. That's over-compression at it's finest. Now you'd figure with an HD remaster, we should get these files in a less compressed state, however that isn't the case at all with this release. It seems like a minuet things to complain about, however I think it all plays into the fact that this was a real lazy HD port, not a remaster. And for the sake of higher quality, that should have been fixed.

That rant aside, I agree that $20 is too much for this. Even at the PS+ discount, and even though it's one of my top two favorite entries in the RE series, I was still hesitant on getting it. And your comment

No it's a mess, how can you say you're not reviewing the base game then give it 5/10 for gameplay. And give the game 10/10 for multiplayer when it has no multiplayer.

Sorry to sound cruel but this is a joke of a review. He also doesn't even know this is a HD version of the Gamecube game and assumes it's some sort of remake saying the gameplay hasn't changed much. It's the gamecube version in high res that's why.

dinkeldinkse4601d ago

Are true? It's a really shitty port of a great game? From what I have heard, it's a good thing I haven't bought it. There is no way Capcom is going to get me to spend $20 for a dl only, shitty port.

Pozzle4600d ago

If you haven't played RE4 before, it's worth a download. But yes, sadly it's a pretty lousy port of a good game. Nothing but a lazy upscaled port that still has jaggy character models, fuzzy textures and blurry/fuzzy cutscenes. Pretty much everything that has been mentioned in the above review is correct.

But whether or not that is enough to put you off buying the game is up to you. :)

dinkeldinkse4600d ago (Edited 4600d ago )

I won't waste money on a terrible port that is not any better than my ps2 copy of RE4.

If I thought Capcom had put any effort into RE4 HD, I would have bought it the day it was put on the PS Store.

CynicalVision4601d ago (Edited 4601d ago )

It's funny, as soon as I saw the score I was all set to complain but reading the entire review I completely agree with you.

I love Resident Evil 4 but this HD remake is nothing more than a lazy port.

Pozzle4600d ago

"This fact is proven by Capcom skimping out on retexturing the cut scenes in Separate Ways."

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. As far as I could see, this hasn't been mentioned in any of the RE4 HD reviews, so I thought maybe something had (somehow) gone wrong with my download. The cutscenes in Separate Ways are downright ATROCIOUS. They're fuzzy, jagged and it's hard to make out the characters' faces in some scenes. It looks like an SD game playing on a HD TV. Hell, I'd even go as far to say it's worse than that!

Nice review, though I'd give it more of a 7/10 because i love the game and it does look better than any version even if it doesn't stand to be considered a HD remake. About the "HD" funny thing is its really not HD the textures are just uncompressed versions of the last gen textures. The only thing Capcom did was emulate the game for 360 and PS3. Sad really i mean i only spent 10 on it (playstation plus) so I am fine with it.

lex-10204598d ago

I would have given it a 7 or 8 except I wasn't reviewing the actual game. I was reviewing the HD remake. The HD remake only get's a 5.5. The overall game is still one of my favorite games ever.

Obviously remakes are doing well, so the companies are making money, and Gen X gamers like myself can relive awesome gaming memories with much improved controls, and graphics. They are a good thing, and probably make enough money to push companies to take new chances.

"Gaming's Unbalanced Obsession"

idk about all that. It's not that much of a head-scratcher to guess that RE4 Remake was going to sell well, when the original is one of the most successful games of all time and has already been re-released a dozen or so times. Who's obsession is it? Gamers wanting to play an all but guaranteed excellent game, or publishers/devs deciding the most cost effective way to make even more money is to sell us something familiar? To quote Todd: we'll stop re-releasing Skyrim when people stop buying it. He said that during a decade long period of no new Bethesda Softworks titles.

Sounds to me, the issue isn't so much an obsession with remakes, it's an obsession with not wanting to put all your eggs into one innovative new IP laden basket. It's capitalist manipulation of the market that causes a remake to be the best selling game of the year, and innovative new titles get relegated to "underrated gem" lists 3 years later, even though most gamers would probably say they want to play a new experience.

TLDR, games are successful because people want to play them, and sometimes games are unsuccessful because the publisher has next to no faith in the product.

It’s not being obsessed it’s being untalented. Most of the time it’s because they can’t come up with anything new. Hollywood is the same way. Auto design is the same way. Our modern elites are highly unimpressive people. It’s because their priorities appeal to the lowest common denominator and superficial garbage instead of reaching for excellence.

RE4 re is fine. It deserved a remake. Capcom just came out with village which is new. It’s not milking its just respect.
