I am not going to lie; I am a Ratchet and Clank fanboy. This is especially surprising considering series that lack innovation tend to get pretty stale for me after a sequel or two. However, inexplicably, I never get tired of the Ratchet and Clank formula even though every game plays almost identically to the one that preceded it. Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time is probably my favorite installment since Up Your Arsenal and is easily one of the best installments in the series as a whole.
A Crack in Time is the final chapter in the future series so rest assure that this game will not end in a cliff hanger. A Crack in Time is unique from a story telling stand point because Ratchet and Clank find themselves separated for most of the game but to be honest there is nothing new here. Like all of its predecessors this game finds Ratchet traveling from planet to planet and ultimately culminates with the dynamic duo having to save the universe, again.
Although not much has changed from each installment in the series to the next A Crack in Time does have something prior titles have lacked; side missions. Now these side missions are fairly generic (they are pretty much all mini platforming planets sprinkled throughout the galaxy) but they are better than nothing. Another new feature that I enjoyed were the little extras form completing all side objectives. Again these were not much but they added a little more gameplay and that is never something to complain about. Probably the biggest improvement in this game resides in the Clank sections. I always felt that the Clank sections in previous Ratchet and Clank games were a chore and I never divulged any enjoyment from them, but not this time. Clanks missions consist of some platforming and some great puzzles that will challenge but never frustrate you. There are some side missions and bonuses but this is the same game you have played over and over again and although not a whole lot has changed, what is there is still great.
My issues with this game run parallel with what I love about the series; it is consistent. Although trophies, side missions and a hard difficulty setting (which was missing from the last game) add some extra replay value there is really no innovation in A Crack in Time. The gunplay is the same as it has always been. The story, while well told feels generic and predictable. I could tell how the game was inevitable going to end about 1/3 of the way through the game.
As I have already said this game is one of the best in the Ratchet and Clank series (if not the best) but while playing you will from time to time be plagued with a bin there done that feeling. For me this didn’t detract from the overall experience and there is still a ton of enjoyment to be had here, but I’m worried this series is going to start getting stale without some innovations to the series. Hardcore fans like myself will love it but if you are a casual fan, you have been there and done that.
From Xfire: "For a company with a three-decade-long history in gaming, Sony has done a crappy job at preserving its legacy. "

Good review, I strongly agree with you in almost all areas. I would give graphics slightly higher because of art direction coupled with actualy impressive texture quality, and gameplay also slightly higher. I never played a lot of ToD, so it might just be that I have had a substantial enough break from the series that it feels new, but it felt a lot different to any of the games I've played before IMO.
nice review, although this was my first ratchet and clank game, i fell in love with it. It has so much replayablity and im so close to getting to that platinum trophy.
i would give gameplay a little more... but that might just be because this was my first R&C, and you're an experienced pro.
Nice Review, i literally just finished this last night and i agree with everything you said. Tools of Destruction was my first R & C game, but im loving it.
the Clank sections are AWESOME in this game and i really enjoyed solving the time puzzles :)
I would have given the sound a 9.9 though, i love the music (Pirate Radio lol) and the Captain Quark parts are hilarious
