Mario is back, baby! This time, on his second original title run (yah know, one that’s not a random off-topic sports or board game) on the Wii, Mario brings back the golden days of NES and re-invents yet again the meaning of Platform Gaming. Mario always had the reputation to gathering the masses and being adored by all and almost everything he touches turns to gold. Based off the wildly successful New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS, this take is a remake of a remake for the most part. It’s been re-adapted for the Nintendo Wii console and brings friends and family together in the best possible way by adding a new multiplayer feature that allows up to four gamers to don the red and green plumbing caps.
Playing this game was so nostalgic it was unbelievable. Yes, the DS version was amazing, and as the sales charts shows, continues to be a force in the market. As much as I loved it on the DS, it didn’t quite hit the soft spot of my heart like this one did. It took seeing it on the full screen to bring me back to my days as a youth with the world in front of me. The levels, the game play, the graphics, and the music, all of it was amazingly perfect. The game is so well adapted that it didn’t take away from the original, but in reality, did what every fanboy of a classic title wishes by seeing their favorite title revamped for modern times without taking away from the magic. Right now the Final Fantasy VII fans are reading this and are continuing to grow hopes of their own that one day….one day…it will never happen, nor should it, moving on.
Starting with the levels, everything remains so true to the core that it almost feels like had it not been for Mario Bros. 3 on the NES, this game would its modern replacement. There are some instances where you’re playing the levels you so fondly remember but with updated and modernized graphics, and at the same time playing new levels that could’ve easily fit in with the original. The music is the same way. With traces and hints and remixed versions from the original, there are also levels sporting new music that Nintendo, in all aspects of its original gaming titles, seems to have a magical way of producing unique yet familiar sounds. Much like Disney, when you’re in Walt Disney World, you hear a soundtrack that just immediately draws emotions exclusive to the parks, and Nintendo does the same where you instantly know its brand.
As for the game play, well…you know it. You’re familiar with it. This time though it’s with a Wii-Mote and not a NES controller. Just need to use to the D-Pad and the 1 and 2 buttons to jump, etc. This time they’ve added a few new tweaks which truly compliment the original. By tweaks, I firstly mean new power up suits. Of course you get the originals, but this time around you get flowers that give you freezing abilities and mushrooms that allow you to jump into the sky, spinning and drilling your way around the levels. Also with these power ups come the motion controls Wii is built upon where simple thrusts and jerks of the controller give you different actions like lifting objects. Lastly, the game introduces multiplayer action that allows up to four people join you in the fun and makes it just as fun as before, yet this time no one’s waiting next to you hoping you fall off the map or that one of those damn Hammer Bros. wrecks you up so they get a turn.
Overall, this game is an essential for the Wii. It’s one of those few games that in the future will be synonymous with the console and owning the title. Much like when people tell you they owned the original on the NES as if it came standard, or even as Peter Griffin claims Peter Frampton’s “Alive” was a monster because he didn’t know anyone who didn’t own that album. Right now this game is tearing up the charts, and has been since the holiday season, and I sense no timetable for its demise, maybe until Super Mario Galaxy hits the shelves, just to distract us. But as it stands, this game will remain a classic to all Wii owners.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first Mario 2D game in almost two decades without the New Super Mario art style, and it looks all the better for it
Am I missing something? It looks exactly the same, just higher resolution… Is this sarcasm?
This Mario game looks great, getting a switch for this and Mario RPG. CANT WAIT, TITS JACKED.
Yeah I liked how much more emotion could be conveyed through the new style at first glance I didn't see much difference but then rewatching the trailer I'm seeing more and more animations that remind me of the Mario artwork from the manual of smb3
I hated the new super Mario bros Style. This new one seems a lot more expressive and less generic. I hope it's a good game
I prefer the 2d Mario's. Me and my girl have played them all together and mario galaxy , Mario odyssey. The 2nd player option is extremely eh

Super Mario U is a great one that reminds me alot of Super Mario World on snes. When ran in 4k@60fps on pc, it's hard not to love it.

Well if Little Big Planet went 3d with Dreams then I guess marios going 3D maker next, looking forward to that
I think going forward it would be redundant to have another NSMB game on the Switch as the Mario Maker series can accomplish almost anything the NSMB series have level-wise.
